TODD DOUGHTY NAMED AS NEW HC/AD AT KIRBYVILLE
scoopno1 replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Football
I don't know the new coach and haven't had time to read his bio. I am a guy who is a big fan of Greg Neece. I have been to a few Kirbyville baseball games recently. That catcher who is the son of the superintendent is about as athletic looking as anyone I've seen in a long while. With that in mind I would think the super would want to make sure he had a good man to coach his sons. I am anxious to see the young man on a football field. -
I would guess that I attend about as many games in Silsbee as AAW which is probably too many. I see many people at every game that I attend so I would guess they see a lot more than I do or AAW. I did not see the incident at LCM. I do feel that some of the problem stems from other district teams playing inferior ball to what Silsbee plays and they attempt to equalize the situation by poking the Tiger. The SHS team should be smart enough to not react to the pokes but apparently they are not that smart. The deal that really bothered me was the fight at Jasper. There was no reason for that in the world. The kids on the floor were having a great time. Jasper got beat badly but the fight had nothing to do with the two basketball teams. I had my 90 year old dad at the game at it took me a while to get out of the gym. We were a short ways behind the team. Some Jasper fans had been heckling the players from behind the bench. Coach Sigler and Officer Montavlo walked to get the bus. The assistant coaches were supposed to wait with the players. For some reason they decided to follow Montavlo and Sigler to the bus. The team was walking basically in single file to the bus when they were attacked not by the players from the other team but the fans. There were virtually no school officials at Jasper that evening. As I was helping my dad to the car one of them said We better not go any further. I left my dad and wife and walked to the car and brought it back to the door to pick them up. As the UIL hearing the executive council noted that they were aware of the incident Still nothing was done. Jasper received no probation. As far as I know there were no charges filed. If I were king..... and I'm not.... there there would be stronger rules. If you start a fight you out for the remainder of the year. If you react instead of walking away then you miss the remainder of the season. These rulings usually are not fair. When you look at it LCM received basically no punishment for their part in the fight. As I was told they threw the first punches. They had to forfeit a game but it was a game they were behind by nearly 20 points. They had a player or two sit out one game. If I remember right it was against one of the weaker teams in the district.

I've always been impressed with the Orangefield coaching and their style of play. -
Should Home School Kids be Able to Participate in School Sports
scoopno1 replied to Hagar's topic in High School Football
I'm thinking about changing my mind on this one.... ran across a couple of good looking home schooled boys... one over 6'6" that live right here in town.... I might have had the wrong attitude and info all the time. Welcome aboard boys. -
You gotta live with your past actions

Do You Think LCM will want to hit a couple of players, start a fight and see if a couple of Silsbee players get kicked off the team? .... It worked last time.

Should Home School Kids be Able to Participate in School Sports
scoopno1 replied to Hagar's topic in High School Football
I guess I just don't care for the home schooling concept. I have one child with a Doctorate, and one with a masters degree. My wife and I both have college degrees. I never wanted to limit my children to the knowledge that I can share with them. I also like seeing the affect of the things that others have to share with them. Sometimes I don't care for the ideas of people in the public school system and sometimes I don't even like the people but I do appreciate that they offered something different to my children's lives than the narrow scope that my wife and I could offer. Sports are not the most important thing that takes place at a school and I agree that to a degree they are a bonus that a child-student can earn an opportunity to participate in. The same can be said for band, choir, FFA and other extra curricular activities. -

I agree with AAW but I do that most of the time. My question is this, Why would anyone want their home schooled child to be around school children in an athletic setting if they were sheltering them from the student body academically? -
I have always said that they had never won a state championship in a sport that involved a ball prior to the win in Basketball. I know they won the championship in track in 1988. They had a five man team. Three of them were Eric Foster, Chris Barnes and Calvin Tyler. I'm not sure who the other two were. I was here when they won the championships in powerlifting in the early 90's. I believe there were four of them. However I don't believe at that time that powerlifting was a UIL approved sport. By they way the championships were after Mark Henry graduated.

If you could win by half a point I would settle for that. The two things that impress me about the Tigers is the way they quickly push the ball up the floor and their smooth shooting touch when they get set up. They have a lot of guys who can shoot the "3". You never know who will have the hot hand. The third thing I like about them is the way Barnes and Jones crash the offensive boards. Barnes must have scored ten off rebounds Saturday.

I usually could not care less what color the uniforms are. I have noticed a lot of Silsbee's uniforms now have a lot of black in them. I am not sure why. The uniform to me is not a big deal in any sport except football. I remember Lumberton had a grey uniform a few years ago that was awful. I could never see the numbers to see who was doing what. They made it extremely tough to detail who did what.

Congratulations to the two fine Evadale athletes. I think they had several other outstanding players but did not progress as a team like I would have hoped. Mackey had a lingering foot injury most of the season. I am not sure how much he missed but he had two different stretches that he did not play and I think he missed about 2 1/2 games. I hated that for him. I still believe he has the best hands of any receiver in our area. His speed hurts him a little but he can catch the ball. I have season tickets at Lamar and think he would have helped them a lot.

I need a week one game. any takers.
scoopno1 replied to burkevillealum98's topic in High School Football
It looks to me like that is the sort of team that ought to have to play WOS. I could go to that game and enjoy cheering for WOS. -
I'm glad you got it straighten out that it was 7 on 7 football. i've covered six man games, eight man games and 11-man games. I've even read about nine man games but never saw one. I love 11-man football. Eight-man is not bad at all.... six man is a game of a different sort.

I noticed last week that there were only 22 or 23 players on the sidelines for Silsbee. That is fine but if you are playing two platoon football then there are really not that many reserves to send into the game so you can't sit your starters as much as many of us think that you should. Who knows there may me more varsity players suited up this week.

I believe Evadale had 50 or 51 players. They are one of the more impressive EHS squads I have seen. They have size and don't appear to be timid which sometimes is a problem for the Rebs.

2016 State All Tournament Teams
scoopno1 replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in High School Boys Basketball
I can't really say anything because I never did get around to casting my vote. I wanted to hear the press conferences of the coaches. I really thought the big guy from Levelland was one of the two best players in the first round and Devon McCain was the other. He did not even get on the team. Kortrijk Miles did not do much of anything the first day and he ended up being the MVP. The big guy from Lamarque was very much a factor. I really wish we had someone like that to come in and play ten to twelve minutes a game for the Tigers when we need a change of pace. He completely took Lincoln out of their game. They could not penetrate the lane and he got more than his share of rebounds. -
Dakota was not the one I was referencing.
-
No. In that particular instance. It was a girl from Smithville who came into the game and dove on the floor under the Silsbee basket for a loose ball and came up crying. It was fairly obvious why Dakota was upset. I was certainly hoping that her arm was not broken.
-
You always hear about games where the team left it all on the floor. The game between Silsbee and Smithville was just that. Both teams left it all on the floor. One team had better shooters and more bulk. The other was more athletic and probably more aggressive. In the end both teams gave it all. I saw the ref check on one girl. She came into the game hit the floor and came up bawling. Her team was ahead at the time. I don't think either team thought they would lose. It was one of the best girls games I ever witnessed.

Silsbee's McCain injured in post game fight
scoopno1 replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in High School Boys Basketball
I walked out of the gym shortly after the team. School officials and Jasper police refused to make any statements following the incident. Sillsbee had one officer on duty. Jasper had an off duty Kirbyville officer working. We now have a lot more information than we did when we published The Bee last week. We will have that information in the paper next Wednesday. -
Beaumont West Brook 62, Silsbee 73/ Final
scoopno1 replied to BADSANTA's topic in High School Boys Basketball
I think that this is the first good shooting Tiger team that I have seen in years. Monday they did not shoot free throws well but you have to remember that a majority of the players were playing without even one practice. Conditioning has a lot to do with free throw shooting. My guess is that they will shoot better at the free throw line or Coach Sigler will have them sitting on the bench. In addition to Devon McCain not playing (and he is special) Trajan Harris was more or less hobbling around. That left Maze, Grubbs, Adams and Tanton as who had been in the gym a little. The refs did a good enough job. They called 63 fouls, 33 against Silsbee and 30 against Westbrook. They probably could have called more from what I saw but they might have blown their insides out if they had called everything that happened. Westbrook reminded me a little of some of our players. They were longer on athletic ability than they were on basketball skills. Wait a few weeks before you judge to harshly. Michael McCain had quarter scores of 2-1-7-7. He seemed to be getting in the rhythm as the game wore on. Others will catch up in a week or two. -
It is hard to believe but Jeremy Johnson, a former quarterback at Silsbee High School and Lamar University played quarterback for the University of Charleston last week and completed seven of eight passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. He suffered one interception. He also carried the ball ten times for 24 yards and one touchdown in a 56-44 win over Notre Dame College. University of Charleston plays in the Mountain East Conference which is a Division II conference like the Lone Star Conference.
