1. I'm glad you got it straighten out that it was 7 on 7 football. i've covered six man games, eight man games and 11-man games. I've even read about nine man games but never saw one. I love 11-man football. Eight-man is not bad at all.... six man is a game of a different sort.
2. I noticed last week that there were only 22 or 23 players on the sidelines for Silsbee. That is fine but if you are playing two platoon football then there are really not that many reserves to send into the game so you can't sit your starters as much as many of us think that you should. Who knows there may me more varsity players suited up this week.
3. I believe Evadale had 50 or 51 players. They are one of the more impressive EHS squads I have seen. They have size and don't appear to be timid which sometimes is a problem for the Rebs.
4. I can't really say anything because I never did get around to casting my vote. I wanted to hear the press conferences of the coaches. I really thought the big guy from Levelland was one of the two best players in the first round and Devon McCain was the other. He did not even get on the team. Kortrijk Miles did not do much of anything the first day and he ended up being the MVP. The big guy from Lamarque was very much a factor. I really wish we had someone like that to come in and play ten to twelve minutes a game for the Tigers when we need a change of pace. He completely took Lincoln out of their game. They could not penetrate the lane and he got more than his share of rebounds.
5. No. In that particular instance. It was a girl from Smithville who came into the game and dove on the floor under the Silsbee basket for a loose ball and came up crying. It was fairly obvious why Dakota was upset. I was certainly hoping that her arm was not broken.
6. You always hear about games where the team left it all on the floor. The game between Silsbee and Smithville was just that. Both teams left it all on the floor. One team had better shooters and more bulk. The other was more athletic and probably more aggressive. In the end both teams gave it all. I saw the ref check on one girl. She came into the game hit the floor and came up bawling. Her team was ahead at the time. I don't think either team thought they would lose. It was one of the best girls games I ever witnessed.
7. I walked out of the gym shortly after the team. School officials and Jasper police refused to make any statements following the incident. Sillsbee had one officer on duty. Jasper had an off duty Kirbyville officer working. We now have a lot more information than we did when we published The Bee last week. We will have that information in the paper next Wednesday.
8. Any Jasper students involved in the attack, football players or any other sport should never be allowed to play high school sports again.
9. I think that this is the first good shooting Tiger team that I have seen in years. Monday they did not shoot free throws well but you have to remember that a majority of the players were playing without even one practice. Conditioning has a lot to do with free throw shooting. My guess is that they will shoot better at the free throw line or Coach Sigler will have them sitting on the bench. In addition to Devon McCain not playing (and he is special) Trajan Harris was more or less hobbling around. That left Maze, Grubbs, Adams and Tanton as who had been in the gym a little. The refs did a good enough job. They called 63 fouls, 33 against Silsbee and 30 against Westbrook. They probably could have called more from what I saw but they might have blown their insides out if they had called everything that happened. Westbrook reminded me a little of some of our players. They were longer on athletic ability than they were on basketball skills. Wait a few weeks before you judge to harshly. Michael McCain had quarter scores of 2-1-7-7. He seemed to be getting in the rhythm as the game wore on. Others will catch up in a week or two.
10. It is hard to believe but Jeremy Johnson, a former quarterback at Silsbee High School and Lamar University played quarterback for the University of Charleston last week and completed seven of eight passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. He suffered one interception. He also carried the ball ten times for 24 yards and one touchdown in a 56-44 win over Notre Dame College. University of Charleston plays in the Mountain East Conference which is a Division II conference like the Lone Star Conference.
11. I think their chances could improve a lot if the big new guy is as good as he is big.
12. I have picked HJ to be the easy favorite every since the season ended last year. I wish my Tigers the best but they have a rebuild a little. Unless something changes HJ should be the team for one year only.
13. I think Silsbee might be a year away next year even though they will have a very good team. The team's three key players Reed, Elam and Jackson will all be involved in football until very late next year. WOS has nearly everyone back and most of them are not football players. I really like the chances of HJ having a great season next year. With Bosha and Mayes they have the centerpiece to be really good. If they get the right people to go with them they could challenge Yates. Remember they don't have to beat Yates four out of seven they just have to win one game and with an offensive threat like Bosha they have that chance.
14. I have seen most of them play and the most impressive player in the district is a sixth grader
15. They made it to the quarterfinals in 4A his first year.
16. I have spoken with Silsbee coaches many times. The reason they did not play Jasper had nothing to do with the coaches. Silsbee anticipated that they would play Jasper in game five and then discovered that a sixth district game had been added. Coach McGallion did not want to go back on his word to the people he had already committed to play in the first four games.(PNG, LCM, Lumberton and Livingston) This left them no spot to play Jasper. It is my understanding that Jasper wanted to continue the series with Silsbee.
17.
Evadale grabbed their share of honors for all district selections this year; congratulations to the entire team on a great season. (21-10) and another District Championship and 39 consecutive district wins. District 25A Most Valuable Player: Kennedy Jackson Defensive Player of the Year: Holly Herrington Newcomer of the Year: Haleigh Oldbury First Team All District: Brittnee Rawls and Kennady Porter Second Team All District: Hannah Conner Honorable Mention: Katy Gipson and Alayna Langston Any idea where I can find the entire 25A district picks? Congrats Lady Rebels
18. I don't know about the two new players. I have heard that there is a possibility of one new player. I am pretty confident about the coaching situation. I spoke with one applicant Friday who has as many wins as any coach in Southeast Texas and is a pretty good coach. Can't say anymore at this time.
19. Silsbee had 21 teachers, support staff and administrators take the incentive for early retirement. This included on assistant superintendent. They dismissed nine probationary level teachers. This included a number of teacher coaches. In all about ten coaching slots were involved in various areas from tennis, to soccer to football. Most of these were at the junior high level but a number were at the varsity level. A number of these people coached in more than one area so it was not ten different coaches. The situation could have been much worse but the administration in Silsbee made some pretty severe cutbacks a few years ago. They probably would have had to cut more but a larger than expected number of staff members took the incentive for early retirement.
20. I've known JJ since he was a seventh grader and I've never once heard anything about him being a discipline problem of any type. I saw four Lamar games this year and can promise you he adds something that they were missing. He is a threat to score everytime he touches the ball. He may or may not be an improvement as a passer. I think he could contribute as a quarterback, or even as a receiver, or a runningback or as a defensive back if he is needed.
21.

anybody could have beat up on 3A kids... remember who played when we where  4A ...then dropped down to 3A... buna orangefield hardin jefferson... the best running back #9 jay mcguire
As far as the runningbacks are concerned, no one has mentioned any of the runningbacks that played since Silsbee went down to 3A. The top backs mentioned were McGuire, Shankle, Shelton, Graham, Hunter, Arline, Spearman, Price and others that were mentioned all played while Silsbee was 4A. So, what's your point?
I did not get to see many of the backs that you have mentioned however McGuire is the best back I have seen since I arrived in Silsbee 20 years ago. I would also consider Sid Wilson along with Desmond Doss to be one of the two best receivers of the past 20 years.
22. I've been watching the Tigers pretty close for the past 20 years. I would have to rate Lindsey as the best quarterback all things considered.... leadership, passing and running. Bryan Doss was the toughest. I remember him getting hit at Jasper. JJ is an excellent physical being but to me he never mastered the role of leadership to go with his physical skills. I never saw Bobby McGallion or Matthews play but they must have been real good and it would not surprise me if they were the best.
23. I was extremely disappointed that Coach Trawhon was relieved of his duties. Silsbee has a reputation of supporting its coaches with one exception. During the past 20 years the fans have never been happy with the baseball coaches. Trawhon had a bunch of young players and injured pitchers to deal with this year. They are good young kids but their talent level does not match some years in the past. The standard is set in recent years by the team that had Kevin McDonald, Joel Schooling and Rocky Calhoun in 2006. None of these kids could play at their level but if you look at the rest of that team, Blake Moss, Colby Hargrave, Craig Force, Josh Skinner, Keith Flowers, Rodney Daigle and Steven Steed they were all more mature and stronger players than the group on the field this year. Despite their youth and lower skill level this group performed well and finished the season nearly at the .500 mark. I think Silsbee has made a mistake and if we start judging coaches strictly by fan opinion and won loss record we may loss most of our coaches in the future.
