Also Nebraska Miami is a good matchup with fans of both teams active on this site.  If it was still 1992, this would be the game of the year.

GCM has been at the lower end of competitive.
They have not been good by any stretch.  I don't think it is all coaching, but I do think that GCM has sort of just settled into mediocrity and not really demanded any sort of excellence.

A Head Football Coach has to be a great football mind, but he also has to be a Politician and an Entertainer. He has to be able to galvanize a community behind him and his vision. With the evolution of the BH community, they need a leader with a vibrant, outgoing, progressive personality. And yes, sometimes you have go around a kiss babies and shake a lot of hands and slap a lot of backs. It comes with the job.

You know, we can all bash Price (as I did NOT like his coaching style), or Gage, ( I was excited for him to bring something different to the table and in theory could work, but not with what he has to work with), or anybody else.  Nobody really liked Gene Sharp cuz he was a tough SOB, but he got results in the 70's.  Nobody really loved Pudgy Richardson, but he too won a state championship.  Point being, yes, it takes a coach that connects to the kids, has a sound system, has a school administration that allows for risks, and has a fan base that allows time for results.  If you don't have one or two of these, well, it will be tough. It is rare that a new coach comes in, implements a whole new scheme and attitude and is successful UNLESS they have a whole host of super athletes.  Oh it happens, but it's not the norm, it's the exception.  The thing that gripes me is that BH used to be successful.  Why, I believe we were successful because our growth was slow or inconsequential.  That allowed fans, administration etc to all come around and allowed the coaching staffs to work and know exactly what they have to work with.  Over the past 6 or 7 years, BH has seen amazing growth and with that growth comes a dilution of the old fan base, new attitudes, etc...that does look strange to anyone outside.  My theory is it's just the nature of the beast.  PNG, Nederland, Dayton, Crosby has not seen the super growth as the Hill.  They have had a steady system from enrollment, coaching staffs although Crosby and PNG have gotten really good coaches, everything has basically stayed the same for the most part which is crucial.  In addition, when you look at the socio-economic structure of BH (and this is by no means a race thing so don't even try to go there), the BH area is becoming one of the most residentially affluent areas in all of the Houston area -( and yes, that allows for super-payrolls in the school districts.)  This is not my observation, this is published within the housing development communities.  I'm sure there are families out there that would love to move to the Hill for many reasons, but the housing costs prohibit that.  (There are those too I'm sure that wouldn't move there to save their lives and that's ok too!).  All I'm saying is that there are ton of reasons why the hill is suffering from it's  (elite football prowess of yesteryear), and it's called evolution.  One day, the Hill will again be competitive on a consistent basis (consistent as defined by playoff appearances) in football, but until that time, go ahead take your pop-shots, belittle and mock.  We have what we have, we are who we are, and the kids are winners in life whether they win in football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball or whatever!  (Although it would be more fun for us old gasbags if we did...lol)!!
...and as for as Andy Evans?  He was a year behind me in school and even as a young man, he had style, an infectious style that just made you like and respect him.  I would love for Andy to return to the Hill and if it cost more money, well...great.  But if he did, and wasn't successful, the same whole host of you would say something negative as to why he wasn't so I'm not sure it really matters.  I would still like it though for sentimental reasons!!

I remember in 1991 and 1992, Lee was really bad.
Obviously the demographic has changed a lot for that side of town.  But, I have to believe that GCM, at least, is dealing with a demographic relatively close to what Lee was dealing with in 1995 and 1997 when they were one of the 15-20 best 5a teams in the state likely.
    1848 students
    45% Hispanic
    30% White
    20% African-American
    45% economically disadvantaged
Relative to the 2200 students Lee probably had, but in the largest division in the state at that time.
I don't see why GCM can't get enough together to make it competitive.
    Let's look at Crosby
    1488 students
    18% African-American
    30% Hispanic
    48% White
    36% economically disadvantaged

I keep asking the question,  but where did all of the Baytown athletes go?  You'd probably have to combine Sterling and GCM to give Crosby a run for their money.  That'd be 4,000 students to 1,400 to make it a close game.

With the type of kids BH has they could easily become a a mirror image of PNG. They just need to get the right coach in there. Or, God forbid they run the dang option out of the Pistol and throw it 20 times a game to keep the defense honest and have a two headed offensive monster. They are too predictable for this level of football.

1 District they may play in and quality of teams they may face in the 1st or 2nd rounds..
2 The number of kids that will actually come out and play football..
3 Coaching.  And The coaches play a big part in the kids that come out.. It was once said about Sterling the best athletes in the school were walking the halls because due to coaching..  They get a new coach and the numbers went up. Alot..

Help me understand the reasons that schools with lesser student enrollment can do it, but GCM can't. Not trying to be a smart a** here, I just don't see why it is out of the question.

Jump on the Price train now? I was here a few years ago when you guys wanted to run him out of town. I told you then it was a mistake, and I still say the same thing. HF was heading in the right direction when he got tired of the village nutcases there and took the step up to CEK. Talent fell in his lap? You must be kidding. King has always had talent, they just needed someone who knew football. BH decided that running the wing T at the 4A (now 5A) level was a good idea. We see how that has worked out for you. Maybe if you can coax Andy Evans to move home, you guys might have a shot to become what you once were. And hey, there is always the option of apologizing to Don Price and asking him to come back home. I'm assuming that this will be the last season that Coach Gage will be on the Hill.

GCM didnt run any read option in the 2nd half last week if I recall correctly. Tomball took it away completely. Sorry but with this kid at Qb they are not a read option team. But if he can build some relations ships with other recievers then Duke and get a little protection he may look good throwing the ball.
Cant wait for tonight..  Lets go GCM

They are majorly missing some of the offensive line that graduated. Stephen Adams (Who in my opinion is an incredible running back) had to shake three guys just to get to the line of scrimmage a few times last week and Tomball Memorial's defensive line is not close to Sterlings in size or speed. That and they run the read option with a pocket passing QB. The RSS nose guard is stronger than the GCM interior line and faster than their QB. IF they try to run the read option again they're going to have a rough time. But That's what quick passes to Duke are for.

Sterlings first play will be "the annexation of Puerto Rico" for -3 yards, 2nd down and 13, they come out in Oopty Ooo formation(5 receivers) and throw their 1st and last pass of the game as Duke takes it for a pick 6. RSS then blocks the GCM pat, and takes it all the way back for 2pts.
    1:36 into the 1st qtr GCM 6   RSS 2
