1. Haynes sounds like a good one. Now the real question is, will the parents step back and let the man coach?
 2.
Very disappointing list!!
What are you saying?  That's pretty rude to the ones that are listed.
 3.
That would be correct if the ball went into dead ball territory.
Any situations where the batter would be called out for interference?  Heard of this happening at marauder park 13u game this past weekend. Didn't sound right to me but I didn't see it and maybe the kid intentionally interfered???
 4. This is probably an easy one for you veterans but... runner on 2nd base stealing 3rd.  Batter swings at the pitch and misses.  Catcher pops up and throws to 3rd but hits the batters bat.  What would the call be?  What is the req of the batter?  Feel free to add other variables when answering.
 5. Cougar, what if your sons decide they want to pursue a career in rap music?
 6. This could be the smartest decision he will ever make. With all the media attention he will get, he willhave some success. And it doesn't matter if he sucks. Kids will still buy it.
 7. Look at it this way, his chances of succeeding in rap are about the same as making it in the nfl, cause either way I don't think he was going to stay eligible by going to class.  Making rap videos, smoking weed and chasing girls all night can be a heavy load to carry along with 15 hours of college, or so I've heard. At least this way, he is freeing up that spot on the team for someone who really wants it and hopefully will take advantage of it.  But good luck to Da Bull and the rest of his posse.
 8.
Okay I'll rephrase. It's not that we don't have parents that aren't like that, it's just that we don't let them interfere with our program.
Mtc, you confused me with all the double negatives.  :)  Don't worry, I get yo country grammar
 9.
The reason teams like Ned and PNG compete every year is because they have some athletes, but alot of heart and pride. These school districts instill into young athletes at an early age, school and community pride. These teams IMO overachieve almost every year with less talent then other areas. They fight tooth and nail every Friday and they are rewarded most years with a spot in the playoffs. I've noticed other schools whether 19 or 20-4a with very little support from fans, as well as parents. When you look into the stands and see only a few hundred fans, it means that probably only parents of band, cheer, football players are there. Where is the rest of the community? You have to be able to grow that community pride during down and up years to build a successful program. This along with a coach that is willing to sell his ideas, beliefs, and system to the entire community. That's why the recent success of Vidor. You have to have a rich tradition of excellence along with already mentioned stuff, and that's why you have Barbers Hill. On paper, schools like CEK, Humble, Ozen, and Central should be in the playoffs every year, but they lack some of the above mentioned things. These schools have way more talent then BH,PNG, Nederland, and Vidor, but without a coach and a community they will underachieve IMO. It takes an entire community to rack up w's on Friday nights!
Great post.

Most agree that it is Bad mainly when the kids are young.  This article says don't specialize before 12.  Others say wait till kid is finished growing and maturing,  And even others have said, wait until after sophomore year at least.  The answer is different for every kid and family obviously but let's assume we are talking about a student/athlete who is athletic and gifted enough to make a significant contribution in any sport that he or she plays.
First of all the parent has to be honest with themselves which is the majority of the problem with these issues. I have my three sons and two nephews I'm involved with. The oldest is 12 and will be entering middle school and only plays football and basketball. I'll tell you right now he's not a basketball player even though he's going to end up well over 6'. I make sure I clarify that to him also, not in a demeaning way but one in which he comprehends where he stands among other kids his age. My son will tell anybody who asks he's going to play football for LSU or UT and as he's gotten older he's just started to do things to show that. I constantly have to reprimand him for messing with the weights in the garage without  my supervision among other things. All that to say he knows football is his best opportunity to play sports beyond high school. My middle son and oldest nephew on the other hand are the kids that everything they touch they seem to be the best or very near the top at. My nephew's dad was once in the Jamaica national youth soccer program and my sister is 5'11" so to limit or "specialize" him in a certain sport before seeing which one he naturally gravitates to and will voluntarily work harder at is "pushing it" from a parenting perspective IMO. My issue is some parents can't see when their kid "may not have it" yet tell their kids if you work harder than the others "you'll be better and should play" thus creating a disgruntled teammate in the locker room. Good motivation but it really only goes so far. 10-12 is the evaluation period to see what kids are more natural or should "specialize" in IMO.
So Cougar14, are you saying that 12 is an OK age to start specializing in one sport?  Most 12 yr old boys haven't even started to really mature at that point.  That's young.
 11.
PNG doesn't lack issues either with parents wanting to run the district and coaching. 12.
AthleticSupporter-Jock the answer to your question is that my son will be home schooled, my wife is a certified teacher and taught at LISD for the last 5 years and resigned this year. I take no offense to your question by the way. Im sure every district has their flaws too but if you come hang out in Lumberton for a while you will see first hand the amount of Political BS that goes on. It makes me sick to see what my lifelong town has turned into
I appreciate your honest response.  Everybody has their reasons for transferring, homeschooling and whatnot.  Do you feel like what you are seeing in Lumberton is different or worse than most districts?  You can read posts from plenty of other schools that sound sorta the same.  And are we talking about better players not playing cuz their dad is not from there or what?

Tuition really went up in the past 5 years from when I was there...Baylor is expensive, but even if he wasn't getting a full ride they pretty much offer merit scholarships to incoming freshman if they are decent students that get the tuition price close to what a state school would cost if you had no scholarships going there... Baylor isn't an engineering school, but I have friends that graduated with engineering degrees and they are all doing well...lot of folks hiring engineers right now you just have to do a bit more work to find a job instead of graduating from an "engineering school"...and if his goal is to go on to some type of professional school or get a PhD then Baylor is a great school for that...
Tuition alone is $28,000/yr.  He would get 5 yrs paid for.  I don't know #s for room and board but multiply that by 5 and add to tuition.  Probably around 200K total for 5 years.  It's not 300K but still nice.  :)

He must of looked good at the NFTC in Dallas. Here's what the offers I can find in district 19-4a look like right now. Jordan Feuerbacher, TE, Kingwood Park - 8 offers. He has 13 career receptions in two years but he blocks well on film and undoubtedly catches the ball well in camps. I read somewhere he wants to go to A&M though and they could use him after Griffin didn't sign last year or they don't land Koda Martin. [Hidden Content] Dakota Allen, ILB, Summer Creek - 7 offers. Plays the game like a high school London Fletcher and given the fact that he'll probably weigh around 240 not long after he arrives on campus he could contend early for playing time in the right system and close his career with over 30 starts. I think he's perfect for the Big 10 and their power run games. [Hidden Content] Raelon Singleton , WR, Crosby - 6 offers. (I hear he has 8 offers but I can't confirm). Very, very raw but unlike Feuerbacher there's production to go with his potential. He had 125 receiving in Dayton and 157 more against a Manor team in the playoffs who I thought was the second best team we played all year behind SC. He had over 600 receiving yards last year in his first year back playing football and could have over 1000 this year with Justin Walter at Henderson St. His offers could double by the fall if he catches the ball well on the camp circuit. [Hidden Content] Austin Walter, RB, Crosby - 5 offers. (Doesn't show Rice). 10 ypc and 24 yards shy of 2000 last year to go with over 4000 total yards from scrimmage the first two years he's been in the backfield. I've watched the film on all the top backs in the state and country and think Joe Mixon is the best back in the country, Donald Catalon the best back in the state. Only thing stopping him from being a four star is the tape measure 'cause everything else is elite. [Hidden Content]; *Filthiest film in the SETX - [Hidden Content]] Aaron Sharp, QB, Summer Creek - 4 offers. 6,749 yards 66tds with just 16 ints in pretty much two years of work. (Threw for 1,122 as a freshman). 24th rated dual-threat qb in the country by rivals even though I believe he's just a mobile pro-style qb. QBs and kickers do their work at camps but he's on the verge of getting a few big time offers also. [Hidden Content] Aston Walter, QB, Crosby - 2 offers. (Committed to Rice). Playing out of position, would dominate if he got an opportunity to play the position Justin Walter did last year. Same size and stature as Phillip Beck who is in the state record books for his 2200 yards receiving season at Crosby but a heck of a lot better natural athlete.  [Hidden Content] * I'm going to do another one for the next tier of kids that don't have offers but will probably play in college somewhere, I just can't find consistent sizes.
Man, i knew these kids were great athletes, but Jeezz!! Those runs were crazy good against some talented defenses too.
I'm tired after just watching video of Austin Walter.  I didn't know anyone could run that much.  I saw 4.7 40 time, which is obviously incorrect, but he is certainly not 4.2-4.3 either.  What is a 'legit' 40 time on him?
He ran 4.5 on the grass at his Louisiana-Lafayette recruiting trip but that's the only for sure time I know as of late. He ran 4.73 at the Nike camp in Dallas but they ran on the electronics which are very tricky if you don't practice. I think Tony Brown's 4.37 was the fastest at the camp but nobody on Ozen's squad caught him last year on his way to 221 yards and almost 10 a carry.
Track speed is different than football speed.  ;D Austin may not have track speed but he has football speed, he may not be "fast" but he is "quick".
Agree.  Also appears to have great vision which can't be coached.  And can start and stop quickly and then be at top speed within a couple of steps.  He doesn't have 'next level' break away speed but with his vision, shiftiness and speed, he can start at most D1s.  There are lots of 4.3 guys with no vision that never produce because they can't see the hole.  This kid will be a good one.  Good luck to him.
 16. Starting this thread in the Football forum only because I think football is affected the most by it.  There have been plenty of studies and articles written about this but I'll just include one statement from one expert to get things started.  Also included the website. "With the exception of select sports such as gymnastics in which the elite competitors are very young, the best data we have would suggest that the odds of achieving elite levels with this method are exceedingly poor. In fact, some studies indicate that early specialization is less likely to result in success than participating in several sports as a youth, and then specializing at older ages" [Hidden Content]

Coach as a life long citizen of the city of Lumberton, I'm sorry you had to put up with the problems of a few parents who had no business butting into your job. I for one appreciate the fact that you were the ONLY coach to ever get our football program into the post season and I was certainly hoping you'd have enough time to build a strong program within our schools. I'm sure you'd probably agree that Lumberton does have some talent here if certain parents would step back and let the coaches and teachers do their jobs with developing that talent rather than insist on having their child coddled. That unfortunately is the problem with todays' me society. I hope you have a successful and long career in the coaching profession and I hope your next Head Coaching job is a joy to you. I feel sad that a few individuals ran off a HOMEGROWN coach most probably for some trivial BS. Good Luck Coach and always remember that SOME of us truly did appreciate the job you were doing with those young men who bought in to your program. Sincerely, A TRUE FAN OF LUMBERTON HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS NOT THE INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES.
How long does he get to estabalish a program?  It starts in middle school and goes all the way up.  How about the other programs in the district besides football?  If parents are a problem, they are a problem because he has let them become a problem.  Keep them off the field and out of the field house and in the stands where they belong and they will cease to be problems.
I think the question really should be 'Is the community interested in establishing a program?'  I don't believe that is the goal of a lot of parents.  IMO, I think it is more about 'my kid and what he/she will get out of this'.  Just think about the number of kids specializing in one sport, especially baseball.  In many cases, parents don't discourage specialization because in their mind, specializing in baseball will give them a better shot at a scholarship.  Not a lot of specializing in football but let's face it, kids these days are lazier than ever so, of course they would choose baseball over football.  Go watch football practice and then watch a baseball practice and tell me which one a lazy kid is going to choose, if the parents let them.  I would also suggest that in towns like Vidor, Port Neches, Groves, Nederland, Orange, that you have a tougher, more blue-collar attitude that does not accept laziness and probably 'encourages' their kid to play football even if they won't play after high school.  I don't know about the last comments on parents being on the fields and in the fieldhouse.  If that is really happening over there, then that could explain a few things.  That would definitely have to stop.
I hope you are not saying that the baseball players are more lazy than the football players.  My son has grown up playing both, and for every hour he spends on football, he spends 4 on baseball.  The specialized baseball players you refer too are playing year round in most cases and actual high school practices are only a portion of the practice they are doing.  Got to go, now that high school baseball is over, taking my lazy son to do some baseball practice, one of three he will do this week.
If you re-read my statement I made a very general and widely documented and supported statement about 'our' kids.  They are lazy.  Yes, there are exceptions.  I can't say that your kids are not lazy because they played both football and baseball growing up but I applaud you and others like you who encourage them to play multiple sports and stay active.  It's human nature to choose the path of least resistance and I think it is our responsibility to not always let them do that. BTW, will your son be playing football again next year.  I'm curious why my statement struck a nerve with a parent of a multi-sport athlete.  Unless, of course, your son is going straight baseball starting next year.  Hmmm
 18. So sad.  You just never know which day might be your last.  Prayers to the family and loved ones.

So, what's the other reasons?
I dont think they have gotten started yet on any of that stuff. I know they are lifting and the agility training is harder than they have ever done. Its really exciting to see the motivation our new coach has instilled in these boys in such a short time. They want to work and get better. I can see a difference in my freshman already. Arms are getting bigger and motivated to work. I know that didnt answer the question but from what I understand every position on the field is open. I'm assuming he is going to wait and get some pads on to see who wants it before he solidifies any positions... I would think thats why he is waiting to teach any schemes...
He's teaching schemes. Just not complicated schemes. The slot t offense is so different than other offenses that even the basics are different from others. Blocking schemes, tackling, among other things that he is teaching. I can promise you that.
I understand. But I dont know that he is teaching plays and responsibilities as of yet. My boys said he has a process set up and its mostly getting in shape right now. He may be teaching and they just dont know it.
I commend you for not trying too hard to figure it out.  Just tell them boys to pay attention, listen up and work their tails off and everything else will fall into place.  As parents, we sometimes try to learn too much about what the team is supposed to be doing and then arm-chair qb the whole thing.  I think we would all be better 'fans' if we understood a little less about the Xs and Os.  I sense your excitement about them grinding it out and just working hard to get better and that's all that really matters.

It ain't worth the time and stress tryin to take on the whole board just to change the way people view your school. Trust me I tried when I was first on here. I was the homer who was loud and proud about Vidor. Take it from me the best thing to do is let the kids do the talking. All your doing is making it hard on yourself and your school to get respect. Take it from me man. Just let it go and let the kids do the talking.
You know what I've realized, I waste so much time jacking with people I dont even know or trying to explain why I feel the way I do.... It doesnt matter how I feel, it doesnt matter how you feel..... What matters is at the end of the day can I lay down with no regrets, no baggage, and no stress.... I love you guys, you have helped me realize that I dont have to be right, I dont have to be understood, I dont even have to be liked.... I tell it how it is, if you dont like it, so be it..... Our kids will do the talking.....                                                                                                                                                                             Barry Edelmon                                                                                       AKA.
For starters, you make it sound like Nederland 'needed' to be carried which is confusing to me.  They are about to run rule their opponent in Round 2 of the playoffs, but OK, I'll bite... In what way would these boys have carried this team?
