  1. Wow, I cannot believe this! I know Webb has the ability but it seems like his career has been up and down. Great performances here and there but always coming up short in the big meets. Hopefully this will propel him into the top three at the WC next month.
  2. This kid definitely has some moves. Anyone know what he does in track? He looks pretty fast in a straight line as well as cutting on the field too.
  3. My heart and head go with EC on this one. Haven't kept up with HF lately, in the past they were always competitive. Seems like they may have been down lately so I guess it depends on whether the new coach can bring everyone together.
  4. fbplayer99: You are right in that one pound is equal to one pound but muscle is more dense there for by volume, muscle is heavier than fat. You are absolutely correct when it comes to the consumption of carbs and increasing the number of calories to gain weight. What we are all sparing about here is that you have to up your intake of protein for muscle growth, up the total calorie intake for energy, and lay on muscle weight more that fat weight. You have to have carbs for energy and to aid in metabolism of the protein, which builds the muscle. If you are going to increase calories, it needs to come from high quality nutritional dense food, not a lot of fat calories or empty calories high sugar foods. Hopefully we are on the right track.
  5. fbplayer: there seems to be some misunderstanding here. An athlete, especially a football player who wants to gain weight doesn't want to gain the weight from fat, you want to gain lean muscle mass. I think we all know that. After a workout, protein is going to build muscle tissue. The more the muscles are built up the more weight gain there will be. Lean muscle mass (i.e. muscle is heavier than fat) is going to add weight to the body as well as enhance your performance. You do need carbs in your diet as well as the right amount and kind of fat too. The body needs these things to assimilate the protein. A young athlete needs to add protein to his diet without adding a lot of fat, so whey protein is a great choice for that.
  6. Coaching is one (if not THE job) that just about EVERYONE thinks they can do and be great at. Hang in there Coach H. Good luck to you.
  7. fbplayer I'd be interested in what your back ground is and what research you have done. If protein does not help you gain weight what does???
  8. I applaud you guys on your extensive knowledge and research on this matter. Great job! Now get a life!!! Just kidding. There are some great names here, I have heard of them all. Only wish I had some to add. Seems to me that there may be more from over there in Orange who could make a list like this. Thanks again to all who know their stuff here.
  9. Ditto. I am a health professional, I welcome all questions. Send me a personal message.
  10. Can't say I am a fan of straight leg deadlift any more than the regular way. Lunges and split squats are going to be more dynamic and train the body in more of a natural motion.
  11. Good point King. That is a definite must, eating within thirty minutes after a workout, I forgot to mention that. A good protein shake or protein meal with some complex carbs. It will feed those muscles and start the rebuilding process. This is one of the most interesting topics I have ever seen on this site. THIS is something everyone can get some info from.
  12. Those guys need to take the show on the road. "America's Got Talent"!
  13. All interesting post here. My opinion, when it come to whey protein, an excellent choice because it is easily digested, it is a good source of protein. As far as vitamins, those off the shelf at CVS or Walgreens are a waste of time because of the way they are formulated. Yes, you will "piss" them away because they body can't break them down. So, you need to find a high quality multi vitamin and omega 3 fatty acid. You may spend a little more but you get more out of it. Now as to diet, lets face it, how many high school kids really eat right most of the time. There is too much sodium, too much sugar, and way too much fat in their diets. If you can get a kid to focus on eating the proper foods 90% of the time, that will be great. Work out (weights, running, flexibility), REST, HAVE FUN, eat 5-6 times per day and there will be growth. Then again, there is only so much you can do with the hereditary factors!
  14. Amen there Sports Card. King....your back may not hurt now but wait till you get a little older.
  15. Power moves like power cleans are going to help explosion and that is most important in football. The one weakness I see with a lot of kids, training on their own in the summer, is speed development. The ONLY way you get fast is to train fast. Strength is good, POWER is better. You have to include sprint and agility work in the summer preparation time. You can't get faster just doing bench and squats and playing basketball. Got to do some sprints, plyos, and agility.
  16. You would not believe the number of kids who come to my office with terrible lower body flexibility and when they tell me about all the heavy lifting they do it is amazing there aren't more gimpy young men running around. Although they do come back as gimpy old men and want to get out of pain!
  17. Some great stories here. Here is one of my own. I was on the staff at Hardin in the late 80's. We were playing our arch rivals, Hull Daisetta. Just couldn't seem to beat those Bobcats back then. Final minute, 1987 (I believe). Hardin 8, HD 7. HD has the ball on about the Hardin 20. Sets up for a field goal. Just before the snap, (the refs tell us this in the locker room) the kicker tells the holder to move the tee up a yard he doesn't think he can kick it that far. Holder moves the tee, the snap, the kick........the ball skims the cross bar as it goes over, HD 10, Hardin 8. If the kid had not moved the tee, it wouldn't have made it.......
  18. The deadlift builds strength but it doesn't do much for explosive power which you need in football. My biggest concern is from the injury aspect. Way too many high school kids load the bar way too heavy and don't use correct form and end up getting hurt. There is too much peer pressure in the weight room, kids trying to keep up with stronger kids and they end up trying to lift way more than they are capable. Consequently, a lot of low back strain. Same goes for the squat too.
  19. Watched EC in years past and they have a great tradition. I don't think there will be much of a challenge from anyone in 24 2A. EC will be their own enemy. Getting past Mart has always been a big problem. Hopefully it hasn't become a mental issue. When A. Evans was there, every year he would tell me, "the freshmen can't play a lick". Three years later the same boys would be headed to the playoffs. I think that kind of tradition lives on. Best of luck to the Bucs!
  20. Worked in Hardin under Bob Parker, great guy and yes, he does have some coaching experience behind him, no doubt. 3 State girls bball championships to prove it! Come Hornets, lets see you be competitive next year!
  21. Good luck to Coach Haynes and the rest of the Hornets!
  22. CoachHooker: Shad Smith has been the coach at Cathedral the past four years although he is gone now. Shad was a Lamar QB the last couple of years they had football and a pitcher in baseball, went to the minors. Back to Hardin: I am a former coach at Hardin, from waaay back and I have to say it was always an uphill battle to win games there. There has always been some talent (especially at the junior high level) but there was a big mental block when it came to winning at the varsity level. I know they have been a little more competitive when they were on the 2A level than when they were at 3A. In my days around there, it was the parents telling the kids the would never beat Hull Daisetta or West Hardin. Hard for kids to win when that is going on, but now those kids I coached are the parents, hopefully they are instilling in their kids the right attitude. There are a good bunch of teachers and coaches there, I wish them the best and if Coach Haynes is the man, more power to him!
  23. Yeah, I agree, BH it is time to let things go. Good luck next year!
  24. Way to go Brandon. I am sure daddy is extremely happy! Good luck next year!
  25. Good call BH85. I thought it was my imagination but you're right, if you look close the BH runner's right hand goes back and to the left....back and to the left.....back and to the left.................... No what you mean about the state meet. I saw some real talented athletes there over the years, haven't been since 99 though.
