  1. You are correct in that he is out due to injury. I'm being told if he wasn't injured any longer he still would not be playing for Manvel. Just going by what folks have told me that are pretty connected.
  2. I'm being told it was more than an injury. There is a reason why he was not sitting on the bench with the team in the game vs. PN-G.
  3. Back in the day, a lot teams ran this offense or something very similar. So the answer to your question would be yes. Now if you need to narrow your question to more recent years, then so be it.
  4. Eddie Owens played for Houston Wheatley 1970-73. Fobbs. Jr. played for Silsbee and Sam Houston State. He got the nickname of Cardinal Killer from the local media because he always had his best games against Lamar.
  5. Eddie Owens. Wheatley lost to Dallas Roosevelt in state semifinals in 1972. They won state championship in 1973. That game with Roosevelt still is entrenched in my mind. That was the first time I had ever went to the state tourney (my first of now over 50 times). I was an 8 year old boy and what I remember of that game was not so much the actual game (even though it was an amazing game, Roosevelt won 111-109 in regulation) but it was the amount of people watching that game in old Gregory Gym. We were packed in there like sardines and they had closed the doors so the 100's of people left outside were climbing up on the roof to watch the game through the windows up top. It was an awesome site. That experience hooked me for life. My dad (who started going to state tourney in the late 50's and went every year until the early 2000's but had to stop due to health) and I made that an annual father/son trip from 1972 to 2006. 35 straight years together. Dad made 50 straight years. My current streak is at 51 and planning on making my 52nd straight state tourney this March. Oh the memories.
  6. After round one, all my picks are still in play.
  7. No excuse. You need to quit your job.
  8. I thought about going to that one. Looking more like me going to Woodville for that double header. Hamshire-Fannett vs. Center at 6pm and then Crockett vs. Orangefield at 8pm. If it weren't for the double headers, I would probably go to Montgomery and check out Big Sandy vs. Hearne. Two of my favorite coaches and just good guys will be squaring off in that one. Kevin Foster for Big Sandy and Travis Williams for Hearne. Haven't seen Travis since he left Kirbyville a few years ago.
  9. From what I have been told, there is a reason a hire has not been made. It was stated that Mathews would officially leave June 1st. Well, that will make 1 year from when a certain coach had retired. In Texas, you have to sit out one year after retirement to go back to work for a Texas ISD. That's the law. Now, that doesn't mean that this coach can't come in now and start working with the team but he cannot be officially on the payroll.
  10. Down to just needing this one.
  11. Yep. Coach McManus told me he wasn't sure if he would get him back by playoffs but good to see he is back.

  17. Yes. First flip is to get the opportunity to flip for home and home. Win that flip and then the 2nd flip determines which school hosts the game.
  18. Class 5A Port Arthur Memorial vs. Fulshear Friday, Feb. 24 7pm Lee College, Baytown
  19. It's only 20 miles from Lumberton HS to Hardin-Jefferson HS. I don't have a problem with a coach doing what he thinks is the best thing for his team to win. Coach Mitchell obviously thought his best chance of winning was being able to play at home so he took the chance. I have always believed that a district champion should be rewarded with hosting a 1st round game.
  20. I agree. A district champ should always host the 1st round game.
