It is my understanding ( I was not at the game ) that the Lumberton player received a Red and the Nederland player received a Yellow card.
You may be right. It was hard to tell. Both players left the field. And the referee, Matt Taylor, took an awful long time discussing it all with his AR. But both players took swings and at the other. Both should have been red carded. I guess the AR saw the retaliation from the Lumberton player, as she swung last. That is how it usually works. I was sitting next to a local soccer referee(A very senior official without a child on either team.) and he said the same as what I am telling you here. Should have been a drop ball. You don't call a PK with 23 seconds in a 0-0 game.  Especially when both players were equally at blame.
Not sure i understand about the problem with drop ball.  Why wouldn't you award a pk as the result of a red card offense?
2. I have no problem with badndn's formula.  In fact, I think it's very good.  I just think that some first round playoff games are little more than scrimmages.  For example, Longview (9-1 at the time) beat Whitehouse (3-7) 52 to 9; Lake Travis (10-0) beat Austin Crockett (3-6) 58 to 7; Brenham (8-2) beat Manor (2-8) 49 to 14; Refugio (10-0) beat Boling (4-6) 69 to 20; and Dallas Skyline (10-0) beat Garland Rowlett (4-6) 38 to 0 in their first round playoff games last season.
3. "One thing you know for sure is a playoff win is a well earned point" What if that 1st round playoff win comes against the 4th place team from one of the "weaker districts"?
4. I agree.  I think too many kids (and parents) are so fixated on getting a scholarship that they forget to enjoy their high school years.  As whsalum said, a lot of these scholarships aren't worth much anyway.

6.
Weaver Ned. '83
Jamie Weaver was a very good player but not the best to come out of Nederland.  That honor belongs to Buddy Davis ('48).  Davis was 6' 8" and averaged over 30 points his senior season at Nederland and accounted for 60% of the Bulldogs' points that season.  At Texas A&M Davis became an All-American in basketball and an Olympic high jumper.  Davis won the gold medal with an Olympic record in the high jump at the 1952 Olympics.  In 1953 Davis set the world record in the high jump.  He also played six years in the NBA. I realize that this was over 50 years ago but the discussion of who is the best basketball player (and probably best athlete) to come out of Nederland starts and stops with Buddy Davis.
7. I agree with CoachL.  There seems to be a lot of HF fans posting silly comments like HF will make the playoffs this season.  I even saw one poster predict HF would beat Lumberton in the PNG tourney.  These ridiculous posts have to be stopped.  Maybe all soccer related posts should be run through the regular posters for approval before being posted.  We definitely don't want more people talking about soccer in SE Texas.  Let's keep it between us regular soccer posters.
8. Let's not get carried away.  Nederland has had very good basketball teams in the past.  Maybe not in the last 10 years before Coach English but through the years I can guarantee you that Nederland has been 3-0 in district before this season.  Not sure but possibly during Coach English's senior year at Nederland. Having made that point, I think Coach English is the best thing to happen to Bulldog basketball in the last 20 years or so.  He not only has built a good program but he's generated interest in Bulldog basketball and that is not an easy thing to do.
9.
This gets brought up every year.  And it seems that some people just don't get it.  The bottom line is, it is about the KIDS.  The more kids involved the better, and its not just about the football team, you have the drill team, band, cheerleaders, etc, etc, and etc.  And if a fourth place team ever wins a state title, by god they deserve it.  Now I have said my peace. Later..... :) :)
Well said jimbob82.  It's about the KIDS and they should ALL get to experience the playoffs!

IMO he could pitch at any college in the country.  ULL is getting a great player and a better kid.
That explains it.  Too many colleges put too much emphasis on a players size and not how well they play the game.  Good luck to Matt at ULL.

12. Every team would rather play that 11th game.  So why stop at four teams?  Let 'em all in.  It would only take one more week of games.
13. As was stated earlier, qualifying for the playoffs in Texas high school football used to be an accomplishment.  But not any longer.  So IMHO, if you're going to let the mediocre teams in, you might as well let everyone in.  Seriously, why not?
14. Who is Nederland going to be without tonight?
15. I don't know about the effect of select ball on high school baseball specifically but I do know "select" teams have already had a huge impact on school athletics and this impact is only going to increase with time.  With the exception of football, most colleges recruit athletes based on their select, AAU, club teams, etc.  This is definitely the case in basketball, softball, tennis, soccer, golf and volleyball and I suspect baseball is heading that way.  For better or worse, high school sports, except for football, are slowly but surely being pushed aside by select programs.  I don't know if this is good or bad but I suspect we're going to have to get used to it.
16. In response to the title of this thread  "Best team in SE Texas this year", it's not even close - PA Memorial.  Kountze, HJ and Silsbee all have a much better chance of winning a state championship than Memorial but Memorial is easily the best team in SE Texas.
17.
I have not seen A&M this year.  Is Nathan Walkup playing for them?  Starting?  I saw him in a high school AAU game, and he was impressive.
Walkup started yesterday against New Mexico.
18. First of all, good luck to J'Covan!  Secondly, an earlier post on this thread said J'Covan might be the best to ever come out of SE Texas.  Thankfully, several other posters have said that honor may be a little premature considering such local players such as Kendrick Perkins, Stephan Jackson, BJ Tyler, Earl Evans, etc.  But there is one name that is almost never mentioned when listing great athletes from SE Texas and that is Walter "Buddy" Davis from Nederland and Texas A&M.  Here is what the Texas Aggie website says about Davis: "Davis (Nederland, Texas) was named the top two-sport track athlete in history by USA Track & Field several years ago. He earned third-team All-America honors in 1951 after leading the Aggies to their first Southwest Conference title in 28 years and their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Davis went on win the gold medal and set the world record in the high jump in 1952, then played five seasons in the National Basketball Association for the Philadelphia Warriors and the St. Louis Hawks." A world record and Olympic gold medal in the high jump and then five years in the NBA - not too shabby.  Even though Davis played over 50 years ago, I think he is worthy of at least being mentioned as one of the best ever from SE Texas.
19. Don't want to get into the "brother" thing but I'm pretty sure that some of Port Arthur is actually in the Nederland ISD.
20. You tell 'em Eagles2010.  When me and you trash talk it's all in fun but when Aiden1 does it, it's wrong.  He's gotta go!!
21. In college football, if you lose more than one game you shouldn't be national champ.  If anyone has a gripe it's TCU and Boise State not Stanford. Stanford couldn't even win the PAC-10 why should they get chance to win the national championship?
22. Yeah, Stanford is the poster boy for a playoff system.  Any system that won't let a 7-4 team play for the national championship is seriously flawed!  Get rid of those fight promoters and pimps and let's give Stanford a chance.
