You have to go out and try to force a turnover, a bad shot, etc. Worst case is Ned. scores or shoots free throws. You still have plenty of time to score yourself. Letting Ned. get the last shot was plain STUPID!!!!
If the PNG coach was "smart enough" to have a considerable underdog "in the game" in the last minute/seconds, would it stand to reason he is smart enough to handle the closing seconds of the same game?
Apparently not.
 2.
I have spoken to a few of our area coaches since last night. I asked them about this scenario. They all to a man agreed with how Coach Able played that last minute. He probably felt his team was outmanned and wanted to keep it to one possession and take is chances. It turned out he did play it right in that they forced a 3 ball which was missed. Unfortunately, nobody boxed out the backside (which happens on a corner 3). If he forces the issue, probably more bad things happen for PNG than good. Nederland is the better team and he needed to keep their scoring to a minimum by giving them only a few seconds to get 1 shot off and not have multiple chances of winning the game late. Who knows how overtime would have went, but Coach Able played it right.
If he felt his team was out-manned, why did he play for OT?  The longer the game goes, the more likely it is that the better team is going to win.  IMO, PN-G should've played aggressive defense when there was still a minute or so to go in the game.  By doing this, PN-G could've forced a turnover or gotten the ball back trailing by only 1 or 2 and had enough time to score the winning basket.
 3. With the game tied, PN-G let Nederland hold the ball for the last 90 seconds and take the last shot?  Hmm.  I guess PN-G was hoping for OT.
 4. With PA having only one high school, there will always be some pretty talented PA kids looking for playing time. And if they aren't getting it at PA Memorial, why not transfer to Nederland.  Coach English is a great coach and kids want to play for him.
 5. Doesn't Nederland usually play in this tourney?
 6.
23 to 0 to start the 2nd half. 1 minute left 43 to 22 Ned.
Wow!!  Now that's what I call halftime adjustments.
 7.
Edward Persia I know some would say J'Covan Brown, but I think he only played a few years at Kelly
Only played a few years a Kelly??  How many years can a kid play at Kelly?
 8.
1-2 after playing the 2 top teams in the district. Not blaming the coach for the unforced to's. The kids had plenty of oppurtunity's to win both games. I'm saying that vidors starting five are as good, Individually, as any other in the district. They just make bad decisions that are costing them close games.
Maybe if they'd played a tougher non-district schedule they wouldn't be making bad decisions that are costing them close district games.
 9. Very impressed with Silsbee tonight.  But also got to give Ball their due.  They beat four real good teams to win this tourney.  A very talented HCYA team, an amazing Christian Life team, a solid Baytown Sterling and then a very good and motivated Silsbee for the championship.
 10.
Pupmom are you serious? Both teams fought hard and played well! Ball is the #6 ranked team in the country. Do you even know basketball?
In what country is Ball the #6 team?
 11. Saw Silsbee beat West Brook last night and was impressed with their play and their hair cuts.  Having said that, if they beat Ball today I'll be very surprised and greatly impressed.
 12.
My turn to spell it out.  It is usually a different type of athlete that wins in those sports.  Also, at 4A it is usually different kids.
I don't understand what you mean be "different type of athlete".  Nederland had enough good athletes to beat the second place team this season (PN-G) and to take the district champs (Central) down to the wire.  This issue of Nederland not having the athletes to compete for district titles in football is pure BS.
 13.
You did not mention Track or Football??
OK, I'll spell it out for you.  Since we have the athletes to win district titles in all other sports, I can't believe we don't have the athletes to do the same in football.
 14.
Which of those 20 years did he have the best athletes.  Nederland has always had good athletes(several that I would call great), but how many times have they been the most athletic team on the field.
Nederland has good enough athletes to compete for and often win district titles year end and year out in baseball, soccer, cross-country, swimming, tennis and now basketball.
 15.
Larry Nueman is a top 3 coach in this area. You only have to look back so you can see foward. Coach Nueman when given the right talent will get you were you want to go. Even more impressive is the years he doesnt have as much talent he will still get you down in the right direction. Winning when you should not. Signs of a good coach.
I guess in 18 years he's only had the right talent once.
 16.

Nederland's record over the last 5 seasons: 28-26 with ONE winning season.  I can't understand this blind devotion to the current staff.  No doubt Larry Neumann was good for Nederland when he was hired almost 20 years ago but Nederland needs something to jump start the football program.  Look what new coaches have done for Nederland's basketball team or PN-G, Bridge City and Memorial's football teams.
I know most will disagree with me on this but, I would not look at the overall record. Nederland has been 4-3 in district play the last 5 years and missed the playoffs once. 05 they were 3-1 in a shortened season (Rita) and 3-5 in the playoffs over that time.   I think throwing Memorial and BC as comparison is not a good choice for a 5 year history.                    2006 2007 2008 2009     2010 Nederland      (6-6) (7-3) (5-5) (5-6)     (5-6) Bridge City      (6-4) (0-10) (4-4) (7-4)     (6-4) Port Arthur Memorial     (6-5) (4-6) (3-6) (6-5)     (9-4)
My point about Bridge City and Memorial is that their new coaches seem to have their programs heading in the right direction.  I realize that Stump has been at Bridge City for 4 seasons now so I guess he's no longer a new coach.  But there seems to be an energy and excitement around the programs I mentioned that I think is missing in Nederland.  Let me be clear, I don't think Larry Neumann or the Nederland staff suddenly forgot how to coach.  I just think Nederland's football program is in a rut and something needs to be done about it.  Maybe this highly touted group of underclassmen coming up will turn it around.  But I just saw the All-District selections and apparently Nederland had a lot of talented players this year too.
 18. Why is someone's "fanhood" questioned just because they point out the relative lack of success of their coach over the last several years?  Do you think PN-G is sorry they asked some tough questions and made some tough decisions about the direction of their program a few years ago?
 19. I think the reason you're not getting much interest is because to the national media, the Golden Triangle is part of greater Houston.  And reporting that a lot of great athletes come from Houston is hardly newsworthy.
Any weight training on game days is stupid, but if you choose to be a multiple sport athlete then you should be dedicated to each sport by giving effort into each respective sport. If there isn't a game on that day and a student only has basketball practice that day then the student should do his lifting for football on that day, but lifting on game days is totally ignorant on the football and basketball coach's behalf. If I'm not mistaken I have heard that H-F actually has some talented players on varsity this year and if that's true then there is no reason not to see results.
Your saying that during basketball season, basketball players who also play football are expected to lift weights for football if they do not have a basketball game that day. So I would assume that during football season these same kids practice football and do their basketball training on Monday thru Thursday?
 21.
On some ongoing threads there are those who are downing schools, players and coaches for not having the resumes for being a part of the playoffs in this age of expanded teams in the mix due to UIL rules. Well I just wanted to give some props to all the young men and young women that spend hours and hour in practices. Football players endure the heat of summer to get started, while the girls hit the gym for volleyball practices, basketball players are taking over for the most part now and don't mention bleachers to most of them, baseball, softball, track, tennis, golf, power lift and soccer players are soon to get started if they have not already started. We weekend warriors who might play a round of golf every so often (at least that is me) or go bowling or maybe play in a softball league need to remember that for many of these young people they are keeping up with their school work, some are holding down part time jobs, some are doing extra personal practices to better themselves in their sport, so before we start getting down on any student athlete that is just abiding by the rules as they stand right now, lets all remember that these are the "GOOD KIDS", these are the ones that are looking at going to college or vocational schools to further their educations. These are the ones that are joining the military. These are the ones that had a drive to succeed and that we want to be in positions of leadership in our country in the years to come. If you have be negitive on a post think about who and what you are belittleing as you do it. We should be encouraging these kids not downing them. Just my opinion, but I say more power to them and I wish more would get involved, but with attitudes like some of the posts on some of the threads you could see why some might not want to be a part of high school athletics.
Good post but I take exception to one thing you said.  These are not THE "GOOD KIDS".  These are some of the "GOOD KIDS".  A lot of "GOOD KIDS" do not participate in high school athletics.  There are "GOOD KIDS" in Vo Ag, Band, Drama, Debate, etc.  I know it seems I'm nitpicking but too often the non-athletic kids are overlooked and they shouldn't be.
So this is what it's come to in Nederland.  A losing season is considered successful.
Unless you win a State championship, we all lose the last one.
Not true.  Ozen won their last game.
Maybe, but it was not the last game of the football season. The football season starts in August and runs THROUGH December. The season includes scrimmages, non-district games, district games, and the state playoffs. Ozen won their last DISTRICT game. I am not sure if your aware of this, but the SEASON is not over at that point or many teams. Congrats Ozen for winning your last game of the district SEASON. For those teams that are playing THIS Friday and Saturday, someone will lose their last game of the season.
No, I wasn't aware that some teams keep playing after the end of the regular season.  Does Texas HS football have some sort of a playoff system?
