In my opinion coach Mathews is one of the most effective football coaches pacing the sidelines in Southeast Tx. His competence and quality as a coach cannot be calculated by just the numbers of wins or losses. He is using the means of football to influence young men to tackle more than just opposing players, but issues like racism and bigotry and he is making a difference. That is how you exercise true affirmative action, and that my friends is a game plan the good people of Vidor can support.
Well said
2. Congrats Coach Mathews...you are the best.  You have turned this program around and we thank you for that.  As you said in one of your taped interviews...'"We will surprise some people."'  And that we did on Friday night.  They looked awesome, some mistakes-but who doesn't have mistakes at this level, and still held their own.  They kept their heads up high through it all.
3. Let's not start this CRAP...everyone has good and bad points.  RustedCutlas...defense did very well, considering how small we are and how large they were...they probably had 100 lbs./person more on them than us.  I think they handled things very well, and did get to that QB several times.  I will always think there is room for improvement in any game no matter if you win or lose.  There will be mistakes no matter how well you played and yes...we need to defend better especially against the pass, but they looked good in that area as well.  They hung with them and that's what counts.  They would have been at the QB's back door more if it had not of been for #43 holding most of the game.  How is the kid that came off the field wobbling? Did he get a concussion or just a hard hit? And what about the kid that got knocked around when Texas High got the unsportsman-like conduct call?
4. I want to say what a great game last night boys!  You made some mistakes, but overall you really impressed me.  You keep this up and you will surprise a lot of teams in our district.  No one expected this kind of an outcome for this game.  Great Job and see you next week.  GO PIRATES!!!

Because I am close with most of the team, and personally know the few returning starers... Although I am fully aware of our losses, I am still optimistic about this upcoming season as are many of the players that were with varsity all last year. I am not going to call anyone out on their beliefs but you really shouldn't play if you don't believe there is any chance, much less hope, of success.
vp13, I hope to God you guys can prove what I'm hearing, repeated every time football comes up in discussion, wrong. Good luck and train well.
I've been hearing things also, but that doesn't really matter. We are always in the mix of things and we always bump someone out of a playoff spot.  We have a great coach with a bunch of great kids that have a lot of class.  We have come a long way since Matthews came along; yes, it is fun to win and make it to the playoffs, but when we do lose...it's fun to see the respect you guys give to the opposing team and their coaches.  You are a CLASS ACT win or lose, on and off the field.  Good luck PIRATES!
8. There are none ! :D
I guess you have never been to a Vidor game!!!  It is always interesting.  Anyone who has ever competed against us knows they better not let their guard down. We fight to the end, we never give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1992 Vidor vs. WOS, I believe I have the correct year.  Home field advantage.  We held them on the goal line to win the game.  2010-Central vs. Vidor, great game with double overtime.  We didn't come out the winner, but you couldn't have asked for a more respectful game on both sides of the ball.  It was one that you wanted to win, but didn't mind losing because of the fun it was to watch two talented teams play one another.
9. My family and I decided to go and support the Jags being they were the only team surviving in our district.  We saw  Nederland, PNG and of course us...Pirates fans.  JAGS,  FW is an incredible team on all sides of the ball.  I don't think anyone in out district would have pulled out a win against them.  You have nothing to hang your heads about.  You were outmatched everywhere and that happens in the playoffs.  Everything you guys tried, they executed very well against.  They are a well coached, well disciplined team.  Thanks for a great ride into the playoffs and we'll see you next year. FW...What can I say, WOW!!!!  You are an amazing team and it was fun watching you play.  You have what it takes to make it to state.  Hope to see you there and maybe we'll be able to come and watch!!!
10. How our PIRATES never gave up.  Less than 20 seconds to go in the ball game, we were down 28-7, and we scored.  That's what I call a TEAM!!!  If we could select a Southeast Texas Team for hard work, determination, loads of pride, respectable to all...I would choose my PIRATES!!!  You boys and coaches showed class all season long and I am proud of you.  Can't wait to see next season and the new crew!!!  Love you guys and thanks for a great season of slobberknockin' ball!
11.

[img][Hidden Content]]
....  Priceless.... 8) 8)
This photo is just one of many hugs!  Coach Matthews is a wonderful christian man.  He has taught these young men about respect,  determination and most importantly...to be what God has taught us all along, to love unconditionally!  It's not to often you see all of this in your coach.  HE DESERVES COACH OF THE YEAR!!!
12. Can everyone move on to the Livingston game and quit whining over something that can't be changed?????????  Nederland won.  We were outplayed, just like the PNG game.  We came in half-focused and lost again!!!
13. Personally, I don't think we looked good at all. In fact, we haven't looked good since we played Central. We are playing sloppy!!! Come on guys...you want to be in the playoffs...you have to execute. You have to score on their mistakes when you can't score otherwise! PNG has an awesome team. They can do it all and I can't use last nights game as an example. It's hard to stop a team that can run, throw and has a great offensive line. This is what you will see when we make it in the playoffs and unless you do more...it will be over 1 game deep. I know you have more heart and more talent than what I saw last night. Let's get our spirits back up and win out. Shane, great run!!! Keep on truckin', you'll get you a kickoff return soon!!!
14. You may think this is funny, but NOT KOOL MAN, NOT KOOL AT ALL!!! That's a personal bashing to me as a PIRATE FAN!!! Mathews is one of the best coaches we have had, probably in our school history. Who cares if his shirt is untucked...it's a FOOTBALL GAME!!!!!!! Go bash your own side!!! In a lighter note...no one will be able to predict the outcome of this game. It will be a close one and I feel the same whoever has the ball last wins! Good Luck to both teams and I say Vidor by 1.
15. KUDDOS to Lumberton for shutting us down on the drives up the middle. If we hadn't forced that fumble, the outcome would have been different. That was what we needed to get the team back in the game, and to be honest those two TD's is how we have looked all season. I don't know where they were the rest of the game, I guess it was a good as it was going to be with that L-Train defense. I think the coaches need to figure something out when the middle gets hammered!!! Question? Who is Utterback??? I thought that Garcia and Johnson were hurt?
16. This was one of those games that...yes it hurts to lose, but you don't go away crying!!! What a classy game by both teams and their coaches. These boys have a lot of respect for their team, coaches and opposing team and coaches. Not very many well-disciplined ones left anymore. My favorite part was Coach Matthews and some of his crew kneeling to the ground! It was very nerve racking wasn't it? I don't think there was a single fan sitting! I ditto the hats off to both teams!!! Good Luck to My Pirates and the Jags as well.
17. I agree! This won't be a blowout by either team. It will be an on the edge of your seat game, I see a lot of back and forth scoring! GOOD LUCK TO MY PIRATES!!! I KNOW YOU'RE WELL PREPARED MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY!!!
18. Did you expect any less? It did rain and the field was wet!!! Be thankful there wasn't more.
19. I don't care what anyone thinks of Vidor and neither does the team. Coach Matthews and his crew know they have a great team this year...despite who we play in the pre-season!!! It will be tougher in district, and we may not score all of those points like we have over the past two games; but, we will be a team everyone will worry about! They are ready and they will MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!!! Great game last night guys. Great fakes and great passing and receiving!!! District will be exciting and I believe some really close games!!!
20. I was thinking the same-not quite as good as what I have been reading-but it is the first game. They will need to improve on defending the pass, but with the type of defense they run that is how it's going to look. As long as we can score we will be ok!!! District will be tough, but we are very well conditioned and sometimes just wearing the other team out is all you need.
21. The 2005 squad could never play as a team. When something bad happened...that was it, game over! They were fighting among themselves, the coaches were fighting among themselves. The parents tried to get their two cents in and everything fell apart. This team never gives up. They fight to the end! All I have to say is WATCH OUT EVERYONE...we will not be taken lightly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
22. The difference is the attitude. The squad from 2005 is nothing compared to this squad. They have what it takes to win and I credit that to Coach Mathews and his crew. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't have a team you have nothing.
23. Lumberton, but not by much. Nederland defense is weeeeeak. Their offense can be stopped...Grogan is a hoss, but is weak in spirit. All you have to do is hit him hard a couple of times and he will be down. Stop Cardenas and you will have it made. He is pretty much their main receiver. Other than that...they're not that impressive. Stay ahead the whole game and you will really have it made. The defense gets down easily!!! Really don't see them making it too far into the playoffs!!!
24. You guys played your hearts out last night and we are so proud of you. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Thanks for the great year and we will be in the playoffs next year, especially if we can get a passing game going. We could be unstoppable. Teinert has accuracy, and power to get the ball to where it needs to be. Would love to see the coaches utilize that more. Maybe next weeks game, since nothing is on the line for us, we will see a look into next season?!!!
25. Ok Vidor fans, time to tone it down. This is not going to be an easy "W" for us. This is going to be one tough game for both sides. The boys need to stay focused and the one way we can help is by focusing on Friday night only. It's not about Halloween, Homecoming, being in Our Stadium, or two years ago. It's all about how well we execute and keep our heads in the game. Coach Matthews knows what he needs to do to get them motivated and ready to play ball and trust me they will be ready!!! Good Luck PIRATES! Hit 'em hard and make them know who you are playing!!!
