Leger, Bears seek playoff run

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

LITTLE CYPRESS — Nestled under the pine trees at Don Gibbons Field at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School is a baseball team gearing up for 2009.

A majority of those players were there last year and remember all too well how Lamar Consolidated bounced the Bears in two games.

Senior catcher Stefan Leger is one of those players.

“Last year was disappointing,†Leger said. “It was especially disappointing to lose in two games. All teams will always say they should have won but I truly feel we should have. We should have at least taken them to three.â€

The Bears went 24-10 a year ago and defeated the Huffman Falcons in three games in the bi-district round.

Leger and the Bears are now ready to put 2008 to bed and make sure LC-M is prepared for what should be a successful 2009.

“It is good to get started,†Leger added. “It was nice to practice with the guys and it has been real exciting. Last season feels like forever ago. We are ready and working on ways to get back to the playoffs. Getting to the playoffs is first on our minds. Then we want to keep winning.â€

Leger did not tell any personal goals for himself this year and is only saying, “Whatever happens will happen.â€

The Bears will be one of several good, if not great, teams in District 20-4A this season along with Port Neches-Groves, Vidor and Nederland.

Vidor is coming off consecutive playoff trips while Port Neches-Groves was the district champion a year ago.

“Our district is still highly competitive and now you add Livingston,†Leger said. “That is another team now we have to compete against. Vidor and PN-G are going to be two great teams so it is going to be fun to see how it all turns out. We are first going to try to make the playoffs and then worry about the district championship. Everyone wants that but the playoffs are the main thing. We are focused and ready to start competing.â€

If the Bears compete like most think they should, 2009 could be another banner year for Leger and LC-M.
