I won’t mention Thanksgiving Black Friday in Austin (wink wink again, kinda) Is the Right Wing in this country so freaked about “DEI” that they would even think about banning teachings of Plato, considered along with Socrates as the founders of western philosophy, from a Philosophy curriculum? That is dangerously insane. It is a form of apartheid for the government to forbid or even attempt to limit the discussion of race in public education. Gender should be a family issue, not a state issue, so anything beyond counselors’ training is more than I think the state has any business in. But racism is so imbedded in our society that forbidding its discussion especially in higher education is a form of separation devised and enforced by the state. The logic makes a pretzel look like a hula hoop. They don’t want too much discussion about Frederick Douglas or Harriet Tubman when it comes time for the history lesson. I mean, leaving Plato out of Philosopy, Pythagoras or Newton out of Math and Physics, or Ptolemy and Copernicus out of Astronomy is no different. They are a part of their respective disciplines’ core principles and history. Conservatives have always railed against the state’s involvement in local matters, be it Fed vs. State or State vs. local entities. Now they insist on the government being involved in bedrooms, classrooms and even boardrooms making sure straight white people don’t have to talk about uncomfortable subjects that are a major part of this country’s history. Who’s running the nanny state now?
