98. Nicholls State

Coach J.P. Piper loses one terrific Australian (Ryan Bathie, 15.8 ppg) but has several others at his disposal, and Bose (15.0 ppg, 5.4 rpg) is the best. Bose, guard Fred Hunter (10.6 ppg) and a solid collection of talent should earn an NCAA bid.

116. Sam Houston State

It's time for the Bearkats to put things together and win a Southland tournament. First-round upset victims last season, they'll have a team good enough to contend for the title this time. Ashton Mitchell (12.5 ppg, 6.8 apg) and Allmond (15.3 ppg, 43.6 percent 3-point accuracy) make up the best playmaker-shooter combo in the Southland, and Preston Brown scores inside.

161. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

The Islanders will battle Sam Houston State for the top spot in the Southland's West Division. Palmer (18.2 ppg) is the toughest player in the league to guard. Justin Reynolds and Demond Watt are strong around the basket, and Shamar Coombs (8.1 ppg) is a solid point guard.

206. Southeastern Louisiana

Ole Miss transfer Rodney Jones should bring some much-needed athleticism to the perimeter, and Sullivan (12.1 ppg, 7.0 rpg) should be one of the league's best post players. Sophomore PG Brandon Fortenberry has Jones and wings Chris Cyprian and Damon Forest at his disposal, making for a potentially potent offense.

216. Stephen F. Austin

It's time to start over after senior big men Matt Kingsley and Josh Alexander - the league's past two players of the year - led the Lumberjacks to a 24-8 season, Southland title and NCAA first-round loss to Syracuse. Two other key seniors are gone and the frontcourt is a huge concern. Williams (7.4 ppg) and 5-3 Eric Bell bring experience and ability to the backcourt.

223. UT San Antonio

Backcourts don't get much faster or more entertaining than Gibson (12.3 ppg, 3.3 apg) and the 5-7 Omar Johnson (12.6 ppg, 40 percent 3-point accuracy). The Roadrunners will ride them to another solid season. If UTSA can get more around the basket from players such as Demarco Stepter (6.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg), add a third contender to the West Division race.

228. UT Arlington

Haynes (16.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) is one of the best players in the Southland, but he'll miss physical forward Anthony Vereen (17.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg). The paint is the apparent weak point for the Mavericks, but at least Haynes has shooters around him such as Brandon Long (12.7 ppg, 57 3-pointers).

275. Texas State

The "B" boys, Brandon Bush and Brent Benson, are departing and taking 31.3 points per game with them. That does not bode well for a team that went 7-9 in the league before giving Nicholls State a tough game in the first round of the league tournament. Forwards John Rybak (10.0 ppg) and Johnson (9.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg) are the top returnees.

282. Northwestern State (La.)

Injuries and suspensions contributed to a dismal 3-13 league season for the Demons, who are not used to such struggles. Hopes for a quick turnaround rest on the shoulders of the sharp-shooting Jones (12.2 ppg, 55 3-pointers) and William Mosley (6.3 ppg, 8.5 rpg), a 6-7 center who showed a lot as a freshman but needs to add weight to his 210-pound frame.

290. Lamar

One of the Southland's most disappointing teams a year ago, Lamar enters this season with markedly different expectations. The top three scorers, including post presence Jay Brown, are gone after combining for 41.4 points a game. The Cardinals' hopes rest with forwards Hall (8.8 ppg) and Justin Nabors, a senior who had to sit last season with an elbow injury.

305. McNeese State

Massive C Kleon Penn and combo F John Pichon take about 20 points and 12 rebounds a game out the door with them, and a lot of intimidation in Penn's case. Kapelan (11.7 ppg) returns, but the Cowboys will need to make some discoveries to best last season's 5-11 league mark.

328. Central Arkansas

A program that is still transitioning to full Division I status has a long way to go to compete in the Southland. The top four scorers are back - led by Pillow (11.8 ppg) - and all averaged low double figures, so improvement is possible. The Bears still have little interior muscle and are a poor shooting team overall.

Until Roc can prove he can take his teams to the next level then LU doesn't deserve a high ranking.  Roc needs to prove everybody wrong and win the SLC or we'll keep seeing LU ranked near the bottom.

Didn't Roc and LU hold the SLC Co-champ 2 years ago?

Ah, the advantages of swinging back and forth from SLC West to SLC East!

LU also beat every team in the SLC West they played that year including SHSU during conference play.

Ah the jeolousy still in the air.

Get back to me when the LU program has lived up to your expectations. Please don't do this in football - we already got one of those programs in the league!  :P

LU football was gone 20 years, did SHSU ever beat a top level top 25 team?  get back with me when you do.

SHSU has beat the #1 team in the top championship level of NCAA, as recently as 2004. Go into our media guide - complete listing of our wins over top ranked squads. ;)

Nobody here cares about FCS. Except you...

Guess no one here will be Lamar Cardinals football fans for the next...well, the forseeable future!  ;D

With that mindset that you have UNLV, won't be much longer til LU is back in the cellar, reclaiming their spot at the bottom of the Southland standings and not much longer than that when the TSUS Board of Regents is shutting down the Cardinal football program...

Enrollment would suffer when you guys eliminate football again, but good thing for that distance education program! Won't even notice...

Hope the other Cardinal "fans" get with the program and you are not a reflection of what's coming down the line...

FCS is our door mat to FBS. And for the forseeable future, SHSU will have the SLC to itself without LU.
