2008 Super Gold Team- Beaumont Enterprise

Recommended Posts

So Jones from Central is PA News Defensive PLayer of the year and doesn't even make the BMT team at all?

I have to say that as far as local sports (especially HS football) the Surprise is horrible. No doubt Beard should be Defensive MVP, but Jones should be on the team! Is Beaumont Central no longer in Beaumont???

No, it's because the Beaumont Enterprise no longer has a local sports department.  The reporter that covered the Bridge City vs Silsbee football game this year was from Houston.  Call the Enterprise and see if you can talk to the Sports Editor.  I think the only local sports person remaining for the Enterprise is Rush Wood.

Print media is hurting, NY Times is bankrupt, LA TImes hanging on by thread. Even our local TV stations are merging to save money. The advertisement dollar is scare, that's what of course fuels the media.

When the local businesses can't fund the sports writers for the paper, boards like setxsports emerge. Local sports fans thrive to see their local team, son, daughter or grandchildren name in the news.

which is also the reason our southeast athletes dont get the state recognition that other athletes do!  for example the AP Allstate team.  Every member of the AP get at least one vote on the ballot.  The larger cities papers get up to like three or four votes.  The papers sports editor usually gets to vote.  If a paper does not have a sports editor they still get a vote and usually you have some type of editor that has no ideal about local players and they vote based on the  name they recognize coming across the wire from the larger papers.

I guarantee you go to the Beaumont enterprise right now and get every editor for the paper together, no matter what sections they work in, including the sports sections.  You ask them who Garrett Gilbert is and they can tell you what school he played for, how well they did, where he plans on going to college, and probably some of his stats.  If you give them the names Broderick Jackson, Christine Michael, Anthony Beard and Donald Stowers and I bet they wouldn't be able to tell you what team they are on, or even what sport they play or coach.

You know as well as anybody that playoffs are the luck of the draw.  You know, depending on where one falls in one district and others fall in another.  Some teams play good teams and some play bad teams, especially now that they just about let anybody go.  So to say just because somebody went further in the playoffs then others sometimes isn't telling the whole story.  So to use the "deeper in the playoffs" scenario doesn't always apply.  But I'm not saying the Central coach didn't do a good job.  I'm also saying one can't ignore what the Lumberton coach did.  Again, one can't argue against a better record and head-to-head win.

Where were they 2nd round? Home eatin' popcorn...

Dude Central lost by one point in the regional finals... That means that they were one of the four best in the area... Division one and two... See it did not matter in the case of OU and Texas so no it wont matter here...  You can go undefeated in the regular season and lose in the first round and no one will remember you... Dallas was 11-3 first in the NFC and lost in the first round, they did not get any accolades after that.  Just the way it goes... You must win when it counts... They will remember Central in the regional final losing to Friendswood and the Texas Tech signee by one.  Lumberton is the first 20-4A team to lose to a 19-4A team (not named Dayton) in the bidistrict in nearly a decade..... That is not a good stat...

I for one as a Lumberton fan think our coach is definitely one of the best. But, like a couple others have said, Coach Stowers reinvented his whole game plan after the year started and took his team 4 deep, he is WELL deserving of Coach of the Year. Shoot, he can even qualify as PNG's new AD/HC since he has a masters......... ;) Lumberton doesn't have to win everything to keep me happy, just most everything....LOL

If you really want to quibble...Dayton was in 20-4A last year and you could say they're just "on loan" to 19-4A.  Newspapers are starting to suck because of the proliferation of the internet and not vice-versa.  Why wait a day to get the news in print when you can get it instantly on ESPN.com or some other internet source?  The Liberty Vindicator is the largest paper in Liberty County...they probably have 3 reporters.  These boards are great...we really do get to find out who the players to watch are from the other teams that never get reported in the paper.  It even let's us Dayton fans keep up with 20-4A even though we only played Livingston (who is probably further from Beaumont than Dayton is).  Of course Dayton would rather BE in 20-4A even if we have to drive 90 minutes to get to LCM...

The end result is all that matters, not head to head matchups or records!!!  I think you are a little too biased and maybe you should just congratulate someone instead of coming on here to whine and complain......

No whine here.  It all started with me questioning how the Lumberton coach could be ignore for coach of the year, at least share with the Central coach.  He had a better record and won head-to-head.  These are facts, not whines.  And this is my opinion, not a whine.
