Moody's decision pulls plug on Orange Bowl

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

Hurricane Gustav might not have come close to Southeast Texas but boy is it cooking up a storm now.

The heaviest thunder can be heard from West Orange-Stark Head Coach Dan Hooks.

Hooks was very displeased Tuesday afternoon after officials from WO-S and Little Cypress-Mauriceville could not come to terms on moving the Mustangs and Battlin’ Bears game this weekend.

LC-M Head Coach Todd Moody said moving the game, scheduled for Friday at Dan R. Hooks Stadium, to Saturady “was not in the best interest†of the Bears.

“We hope to get our (evacuated) players back on Thursday but it might not be until Friday,†Moody said. “I did not think the best thing to do was to play West Orange-Stark. I did not order the hurricane. But after it you have to assess the situation. We had to see what was best for our team.â€

Hooks insisted he wanted to play the game and felt bad for the players on both sidelines.

“We certainly wanted to play,†Hooks said. “Moody just did not want to play. He stated they would only have two days to prepare for us. They have been preparing for us since Aug. 11. It all came down to the fact he didn’t want to play. We will just lose playing a game and I really hate that. I am not happy with it but what can you do? I even suggested he talk to his players and see what they wanted but he said they would not all be here and he dismissed that idea.â€

The No. 8 Mustangs are fresh off a 33-13 pounding of the Nederland Bulldogs as Quintavious Garrett set a school record with 317 yards rushing. LC-M had an open date in Week Zero.

“This has nothing to do with the game being against West Orange,†Moody said. “If we played on Saturday it would give us a short week to prepare for Bridge City. People are saying we would have two days to prepare. It really is one day of full practice on Thursday and Friday is pre-game. I would like our team to be prepared. We cannot afford to get someone injured. It is about us and getting better for district. I didn’t think playing Saturday was best for us and that is what it is all about.â€

Hooks sees the game in a different light.

The Orange Bowl is now taken away from WO-S and leaves a huge hole in money which would have went into the Mustangs’ athletics program.

“We are looking to lose between $6,000 and $8,000 in revenue,†Hooks said. “We are all in the same boat after the hurricane. I am very disappointed in this and our kids are very disappointed. The score last year was 6-0 and we could very easily have lost the game. We maybe should have lost that game. I really hate this for both teams.â€

An official with the UIL said the matter of the win-loss decision would be between the two schools but more than likely the game would not be recorded in any offical record book.

The Mustangs and Bears were not the only Orange County schools fighting to get a game in.

It took a long time for Bridge City Head Coach Cris Stump to get Kounzte Head Coach Stan Hodges to agree to play at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bridge City’s Larry B. Ward Stadium.

“I am excited we got this worked out,†Stump said. “I talked to our coaches and they are pleased and there is no question the kids wanted to play. There are so many other kids involved including the band, drill team and cheerleaders. I would have hated to see a game taken away from those kids. As for as football, we wanted to try and build off of last week’s win.â€

Bridge City beat Liberty 32-20 last week to give Stump his first win as the head coach of the Cardinals after a young, inexperienced group of Redbirds went 0-10 in 2007.

Orangefield and Buna will now play at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at F.L. McClain Stadium.

Vidor and Houston St. Thomas will still square off at 7 p.m. Friday at Pirates Stadium. No information could be confirmed on Deweyville’s road game against Evadale.

Oh, we believed you all right!  We just needed to see the quotations around his name!!!!

I'm just having a hard time with the statement "it is about us" that Moody made.  How can a team pick and choose who they want to play on their schedule?  Why schedule the game if you don't think you want to play it?

Rember that this was one mans choice and not the  team or communitys.

That's what we said all day. It was him not the kids or community. The kids from LCM i'm sure want to play.

Wouldn't BOTH teams have 2 days to get ready. Moody did not have a game last week so he should have been MORE prepared than WOS. They were busy last week getting ready for Nederland. Moody, WHAT A JOKE.  The coach I played for would have never NOT played because we weren't ready. Excusses are like -------- , everybody's got 1.

What a joke? Coach Moody obviously doesn't think his kids could compete. I bet they don't feel that way. I bet this would be a different story if the Bears were losing the revenue. As a West Orange-Cove taxpayer I think we should sue the Bears for the lost of revenue. He basically broke a contract. I think maybe we should rethink even playing LC-M as long as this clown is the coach. If the Mustangs could be ready after ACTUALLY PLAYING last week, how come LC-M could not with a bye week and the WHOLE offseason to prepare for us? I have a lot of respect for the Bears but come on get a coach who actually BELIEVES in his players?

I was hoping someone would make this point! WOS had the same time to prepair. I think his team may suffer from not getting enough playing time before district. Oh well, better for everyone else!

I picked up my copy of the football preview from the Examiner the other day and just now had a chance to read it.  I'd like to quote Todd Moody from the article posted in The Examiner.

"I define competitive as the chance to win every game," he said.  "We were competitive in all but two games last year.  We were one catch away from the playoffs in 2006, and injuries got us last year.  Bottom line is, we are just going to have to do it.  The only way to convince people is to win."

The only way to win is to PLAY!  You can't win if you don't play!

Come on guys lets all just calm down. We all know that LC-M's Debate team has tourneyment saturday. Its obvious that Moody was cornered in and told to decline the resceduling by Hooks :) Debate's far to important in Bear Country ;) After all its the last practice round before qualifying meets, also giving them a chance to scout the strong Sabine Pass Debate team. We have to cut Moody some slack on this one ;)

I just drove by the practice field about 15 minutes ago, and the LC Little League is already got it together and practicing to play a game this Saturday.  Man it would seem that if a little league team could get it together by today that a highschool should be able to get it together by Thursday.  Not getting some kids back until Friday is bull, school starts Thurday, and they will be back.

This is about the most selfish thing I've ever heard! No it's NOT just about you! My daughter is a senior on the WOS drill team. She was so upset earlier when she heard the news that the game had been cancelled. She can't get this game back! There is no "next year" for her. They were excited about performing at the Orange Bowl so all of her LCM friends could see their routine as well as her seeing theirs. This decision has a ripple effect for BOTH sides and it goes WAY beyond Todd Moody.
