baddog Posted Tuesday at 06:48 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 06:48 PM Comfortable would describe me also. No need for me to brag. Who is there to impress? I believe that everyone receiving SNAP, welfare, and Section 8 housing should reapply and be reevaluated every 2 years. I’m sure lots of these claims are for children who have out grown the benefits. The cradle to grave industry has to stop. This shutdown has shown just how many people the government controls. Sad, ain’t it? I raised my family. No one else did. Reagan and mat 2 Quote

thetragichippy Posted Wednesday at 01:38 AM Author Report Posted Wednesday at 01:38 AM Snap Benefits in Texas I did a little math. A family of 2 can have a max income of $2909 a month…..which equates to $16.78 an hour if only one works. They would be eligible for $546 dollars per month of snap benefits with no kids….. Now family of 4, say 2 kids - same thing, one works, they can make $4421 a month, which is $25.51 hour….and then receive $994 in snap benefits a month….. Incentive to work or not to work? Quote
Reagan Posted Thursday at 06:52 PM Report Posted Thursday at 06:52 PM She's been on SNAP for 30 years!! SMH! Quote

Sounds like I could have been eligible 38 years ago. Never looked into it. I was making $350 a week. Payed rent, utilities, food, truck note, formula and diapers….heck, I was even smoking back then. It was tight, but some people can manage money. Like you, I have always worked. There was a span in between jobs where I drew unemployment, but back then, they called your contacts to make sure you were seeking employment. Not sure how that’s handled these days. I only did it the one time. I worked all the OT I could get. As for your post, I’m not sure if that’s an incentive to work or not. There’s no drive in today’s workers. There are the few exceptions, of course, but most show up on a job and say pay me, I’m here. If being the father of a child doesn’t cause one to stop sowing the wild oats and settle down, nothing else will. People nowadays don’t shoulder responsibility very well. I was a good provider for my family. They’re grown now so I get to spend time with the grandkids. Nothing in the whole world beats that. Quote

We have two totally separate issues/concerns. 1) Restoring SNAP now for those truly in immediate need. 2) Revamping, scaling back, phasing out, or whatever other changes needs to happen afterwards. I was addressing hippy’s post where there was definitely no reason to provide benefits and asking who would support this, no response, shocker. And the immediate need you speak of has been created by decades of policies from the democrats to cause dependence, by design, for votes to perpetuate the dependence. That’s the problem that needs to be addressed, which will only happen with someone like Trump in office. thetragichippy 1 Quote

Several issues - a married couple can have one working at over twice the minimum wage and receive $546 worth of food benefits. That is a significant contribution to two peoples grocery bill. In my younger days I never considered government programs, to do so would mean I couldn't support myself, and THAT for me then and now is a feeling I never want to have. To put some things in perspective, a family of 4 receiving $994/month is 88 cents more than the mortgage of a $180,000 home at 5% interest. That does not include taxes and insurance, but that is significant......With todays rates, the home would be $160000.00 Quote

The phrase "everyone deserves a living wage" was built and designed on failure. The only thing I "deserve" is what I have worked hard for. There are some trade school jobs that make 6 figures.....Welders, Plumbers, Electricians, etc......Requires no college degree, just a good work ethic. Quote
