Kingwood finds a way

Mustangs turn up pressure to secure win over DeLaSalle

Kingwood coach Royce Huseman knew his Mustangs would be in for a physical contest against DeLaSalle on Thursday night.

And for a good part of the game, the visitors from Minneapolis confirmed Huseman's scouting report.

But a couple of adjustments, combined with a 10-1 fourth-quarter run, allowed Kingwood to come out of the Campbell Center with a 41-30 victory over the Islanders during the opening day of the Houston vs. The Nation Tournament, improving the Mustangs to 9-3.

"We knew they were a mirror image of how we play," said Huseman, whose team will play Seven Lakes today at 1:30 p.m.. "They're a very strong team defensively, but we were able to change some things and pull away from them."

Perhaps the biggest adjustment Kingwood made was bringing a relentless wave of double and triple teams on DeLaSalle junior post Royce White, who scored 14 first-half points with an array of inside moves. The Mustangs smothered the 6-7 White in the second half, holding him to just four points on 1-for-7 shooting.

Having struggled with turnovers in the first half, Kingwood turned a tight 17-16 halftime lead into a 25-20 cushion entering the fourth quarter. The Mustangs held the Islanders (0-3) scoreless for the first 6:04 of the quarter as Kingwood began to use its depth to its advantage.

DeLaSalle, which has won three state titles under coach Dave Thorson, closed the margin to 31-29 on a basket from Jalen Jaspers with 3:29 remaining. It would be as close as the Islanders would get, as Kingwood then ripped off 10 straight points. Robert Foran and Hunter Martin each scored four points.

Tevin Svihovec had a team-high 13 points for Kingwood, which shot 55 percent from the field in the second half.

DeLaSalle will play Wheatley today at 6 p.m.

Cy Springs stuns nation's No. 2 basketball team

Panthers hand Florida Montverde its first loss in two seasons

Houston just improved to 2-0. Cypress Springs defeated Montverde Academy (Florida) 65-59 at Houston vs. the Nation at the Campbell Center on Friday afternoon.

Kingwood defeated De La Salle (Minnesota) on Thursday to kick off the three days of basketball.

Montverde was ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN prior to the game. The Eagles hadn't lost a game in two seasons and came in a perfect 11-0.

Cy Springs (19-2), fresh off winning the Houston ISD Jaycees/Reebok Tournament last weekend, pressed the Eagles from start to finish and relied on scoring from wings Phillip McDonald and Erik Williams to get the job done.

"We came in really confident and we weren't intimidated by their ranking or record," McDonald, who had a game-high 26 points said. "We were just ready to get out here and play."

After the first half, Cy Springs led 30-29, but was having trouble rebounding. Montverde boasts a roster full of height—only three players are shorter that 6-foot-3— and the Eagles were controlling the offensive glass.

"That was an adjustment we had to make at halftime," Cy Springs coach John Harmatuk said. "We were going to be outsized, but we like to press. If they run their offense the way they want to, they will just grab rebounds and get putbacks. We really improved on stopping that in the second half."

Williams added 23 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers, while Marcus Capers led Montverde with 16 points.

Another example of why ranking sometimes don't mean a thing. Sometimes you can think your rankings will do the playing for you. Bad mentality to have.

I was there!!!

Madison vs. St. Patrick

Tommy Mason-Griffin for Madison is a man....  If his players would have made shots they could have been right in the game...  But he played alone and St. Patrick's coach is the real deal...  He took the ball out of his hands and no one stepped up.  # 1(6'3") and # 11(6'8") for St. Patrick made a great guard-center combo.

Jack Yates & Oakhill

All guards yates...  They literrally have 5 guards on the floor at all times...  Even there 6'10" center is a guard.  They pressed the bus driver all the way to the game.. then pressed the coach to the locker room then pressed Oakhill for 32 minutes.  Great guard play won this game.. Early on Yate was scared of all the height and athleticism of Oakhill but they calmed down as the game went on..  They took the first lead in the thrid 61-60 and it was to trhe wire from there...  Their coach almost over coached them by going to the stall ball when his team had rythm.  Brandon Hennings of Oakhill is the number 1 player in the nation and probally the number one snow-birder too. They had a kid from Atascasida (spelling) on their team that was a big monstar.  # 23 from Yates is a six foot soph. guard who simply jumped out the gym, he has springs in his legs..  revers side dunks and alleys over bigs...  This game featured like 20 dunks.  Yates is good and will give Ozen Hell in 4A regionals.
