The problem I see here, as a long time resident of Lumberton, is there is too much parent involvement in the school board decision process. Joe Bob thinks his son is the greatest player since Peyton Manning and gets peeved that the coach recognizes that his son is lazy and doesn't want to play at his potential so he benches him. Joe Bob then starts raising cane with one his buddies on the school board and boom all the other members cave and the coach is gone, no matter what his past accomplishments. No one see what is clearly in front of their faces, other Lumberton teams being coached by assistants who tend to stay from one HC change to another are extremely successful i.e. both soccer teams, girls basketball, the band, the Raiderettes and the cheerleaders. All of these groups have had one thing in common, stability. Coach Creduer lost his job having to put up with one of the worst Junior classes football wise and Haynes inherited those guys, they had a lot of heart but little talent. Now his 2nd season was a big improvement from the first and if someone with a similar philosophy comes in maybe this year will look even better since the pieces of the puzzle are there. Doesn't really matter though because this new coach is going to piss some parent off and out the door he will go also. Oh, and dropping to 4-A won't help, it'll just bring a different group around to whip the Raiders. As far as Haynes goes, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes ahead and hang up his whistle.

Didn't say just the principal! One of the many problems! When your principal hires teachers to fill slots that usually coaches would be able to teach without the AD being able to have a say so. And yes you're correct. Why didn't the Sup, who was a coach in the past, step in and help resolve some of the situations? And yes, it does make you wanna take your kids somewhere else! If it wasn't for Lumberton or HF, how good would've PNG been last year?

I agree with this! The offseason was going well. Nate is doing a great job with them. It is about consistency. There was a fire back in the boys and it showed in the weight room. Starting to see improvement and now this. Haven't seen that in a while. The boys do love this coaching staff and Paine. Now its a wait and see process. I know my son is disappointed! The look on his face when he came home and told us what Haynes told them Wednesday.

One chance you couldn't be further from the truth. The football team was vastly improved last year and has several returning starters at key positions. The rest of your guestimates are just as far fetched too btw. The kids are literally praying the board promotes coach Payne to preserve some consistency plus they love him. In my opinion, if you bring in Babin or anyone with a non-pro style offense, you will do a disservice to some of the key skill position players....possibly lose a few of them.

Football parents happy. Players happy. Kids getting bigger, stronger, faster. Offensive numbers good. Defense a work in progress. Young team mostly sophs and Jrs this year. Returning a lot. Does this sound like a football decision? In mid March? When you run a football program and an athletic department your way, sometimes people get upset. Keep in mind lumberton is known for what? Girls soccer, girls basketball, and band. Why is that?

Unless of course you have ties to the district and you think it might be different with you! Which in turn it will take you doing what others want versus what you feel should be done.

I am a sucessful smaller school coach. I am looking for a fresh new start at a bit larger school. BOOM! Lumberton Raiders job opens up. Two other similiar jobs open up. I jump on the internet and start studying the mighty RedRaiders and looking deeply into their program. As I research them and the other two school i find out that the other two schools coaches were there long term. I see the Raiders school board does not like keeping coaches very long. I see that a very sucessful coach held the job before me but was cut in the midst of a rebuild were he had the school on the upward path. I now assume unless I take Lumberton and win next season I will be terminated within a year at the most two seasons. I also see Lumberton plays in a competitive district and it will be no cake walk to get back to were I need to be. Sorry Raiders fans but your school board just sent me a very good up and coming coach in the other direction. This is how I see a coach would feel about coming to Lumberton.

I know first hand the ways of Lumberton athletics. Its not just a coaching issue, its a community issue.

Been in Lumberton 40 plus years, not sure if any group of coaches will ever get full buy in and enough time to change the mindset here. Frustrating for sure. As far as athletes and talent, Lumberton has both but many leave for other schools with more stable and successful programs. Hard to blame the parents, you only have four years in high school and every parent wants to provide the best opportunities possible for thier children to reach potential . My hindsight, I should have moved my kids but I didn't. Lessons learned.

Man so every rumor about L Town being a nightmare because of locals on the school board and crazy parents is true if it's really not a football decision. Why hire a guy with with a bunch of experience then make the decision to let him go not based on football

This was not his decision! He was removed as coach by the school board. This decision was ultimately made at the February meeting. Finalized Tuesday night. I do not expect him to remain AD for long. I know I wouldn't!

Maybe he wanted to go AD only and not be head football coach. Hasn't he already retired once? Sounds like a pretty sweet gig to me.

This move had nothing to do with football! Living in and knowing Lumberton and the school board, I'm willing to bet that Babin will be Lumberton's next coach!

A few members on the school board! Lumberton is a very hard place to coach due to politics!  Larry was liked by the kids and many in the community. It just happens to be that the ones who disliked Larry held more clout than the ones backing him!

Objective is to put the best players on the team correct? So class shouldn't matter! If 2 freshman are getting looks on varsity it must be for a reason. Let them compete and make the coaches decision hard. If they don't get there this year, at least they made the upperclassman understand nothing will be given to them and they had to compete to earn their spot. Long run it will all make the TEAM better!!
