[email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 4 OK, not bad.... Another solid week of track and field performances from our athletes at the Southeast Texas high school meets, especially at Vidor and Houston. The weather cooperated again and 16 new area-best numbers resulted in the 34 UIL state events on the first March days. Golden Triangle athletes brought home 10 gold medals at meets in Houston, Huffman or College Station and that certainly has a way of shortening the ride back home. Even the Vidor Pirate Relays produced seven new area-best numbers – more than the Vidor meet normally has produced. Congrats go out to Hamshire-Fannett’s boys and Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s girls for capturing the team titles at Vidor. Now let’s dig into the impressive athletes. Throughout most of its 20-plus years, Port Arthur Memorial’s boys have been more dominant than the girls track team. Evidently, these 2026 Lady Titans are tired of sitting in the back seat. Coach Tamela Roberts saw her girls capture four gold medals and deliver two other GT-area best relay times at the Sonny Donaldson Relays on Friday at Aldine Davis high school. Darrell Granger’s boys added two golds and one area-best time but it’s unusual for the girls to outshine the boys in Port Arthur’s track spotlight. Tatiyana Crain swept gold in the shot and discus. Jalexis Neal won the 100 meters and ran the anchor on the winning sprint relay with Ariana Leday, Jada Guilbeau and Alicia Francis running ahead of Neal. Guilbeau and Neal comprised half of an area-best mile relay team along with Delia and Torrie Washington. Nederland’s boys also had to take a back seat. The Nederland girls delivered three new area-best times at two different venues. Kiley Havard, Marie Hawkins, and Avery Parigi carted home gold from Vidor with Havard notching new area-best times in both hurdle races. Ella Mecom trimmed off five seconds from her previous best time in the 1,600 at Texas A&M’s Bluebonnet Invitational. Oh yeh, and Mecom’s 3,200 time of 11:27.04 on the previous week at Bridge City broke a 25-year-old Nederland girls school record set by Lauren Pinder, according to Dale Dial. Your track writer definitely doesn’t keep up with those school records. So I’ve got to trust coach Dial on that one. Beaumont ISD’s track and field programs are not quite as established as some of their neighbors. First-year mentor Caleb Ceaser certainly is attempting to elevate United’s program off the ground floor. It’s obvious that Renwick Johnson and Kirby Jones have the Bruins starting to make more noise on the west end. West Brook’s boys came home from Houston with three gold medals and two new area-best outings. Junior Joe Bowser improved his area lead in winning the discus at 153-10. Terence Mouton produced the fastest area time to date in the open quarter, clocking a 48.93 in the prelims. Versatile junior D’Andre Carter won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.93. Another mighty good WB junior, John Fowler, improved his 1,600-meter lead by more than two seconds at A&M’s meet. We have an abbreviated schedule of meets coming up now. But great performances still may emerge from those meets. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 3 OK, our Golden Triangle-area high school track and field coaches and athletes have a lot to be thankful for as far as February was concerned. We had cooperative weather for our area meets at H-F, BC, PN-G and Nederland. No freezing cold nor rain. Unless I’m unaware, we did not sustain a rash of significant early season injuries either. Our last newsletter posted a Triangle-area leader in all 34 UIL state events and we have some impressive news from the meets on the final February weekend. Twenty-six of the 34 events produced an area-best improvement in the top performance. That number – 13 girls and 13 boys events – impressed this track observer. What impressed the most? That’s tough but Port Arthur Memorial junior Tatiyana Crain threw the discus 129-4 and that broke a 15-year-old school record in that event. Now, it’s time to discuss a couple of standout coaches, Renwick Johnson at one end of the Triangle and Becca Peveto at an opposite end. Johnson wears a visible smile because Beaumont West Brook’s boys are humming. Peveto has enjoyed seeing her Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s girls dominate the area’s team competition. The Bruins sport area leaders in eight of 17 boys events. The West End tracksters posted six area-best performances Friday in Rosenberg at the Lamar Consolidated Relays. The lone gold medal winner, junior John Fowler, delivered a most impressive time of 9:32.92 in the 3,200-meter run. Recognition also belongs to fellow juniors Aidan McLaughlin in the mid-distance events, Joe Bowser in the throwing events and D’Andre Carter in the jumps. While we honor LC-M’s girls, we pay tribute to the team champions from the Cardinal and Longhorn Relays – the Lady Bears, the Nederland boys of coach Michael Broussard and the Hamshire-Fannett boys and girls of coach Jeremy Abshier. LC-M racked up 142.5 points at Bridge City to take its second team title in as many outings. Janet Le and Dinah Tippins were the individual winners along with two relay squads. PN-G, Nederland, and Lumberton will give LC-M a competitive run as well but those three may lack LC-M’s depth in the point totals. If Abshier’s Longhorns can continue to improve their times in relay events, those H-F country boys are going to go somewhere… and it might be clear to Austin. Port Arthur’s girls are mighty young but the Lady Titans can say they made a big splash Friday at the Spartan Relays in Stafford. Memorial came home with eight new area-best performances, five in the girls events and three in the boys. Crain’s school record discus throw jumped to the top of the list but the work of Delia Washington, Jalexis Neal, Jada Guilbeau and Jahzarea Jacquet belonged among the more honorable mention athletes as well. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 2 A wise man once wrote “comparison is the thief of joy’’ and since we’re here to bring joy to our area track and field community, we shall refrain from making many early season comparisons. It’s too soon to know a lot about area performances in this outdoor season. Some teams have attended only one meet, a few none at all. There are a handful conclusions to draw already though. The Bruins and the Titans are pretty much neck-and-neck in a boys sprint relay that ought to become quite a show at the 19-5A district meet in April. West Brook coach Renwick Johnson served as an assistant coach under Port Arthur’s Darrell Granger. There should be an entertaining amount of competition between their squads this spring. Memorial seems stronger in the shorter races while WB owns an edge in the longer ones with junior John Fowler. West Brook looks deeper in the field events so far. Beaumont United lacks WB’s depth for sure but first-year head coach Caleb Ceasar has a good chance of owning the area’s best sprinter Emmanuel Shaffers-Jones. And, as usual, the area pole vault leader hails from where? Orangefield, of course. It seems as if it’s been that way forever in Bobcat Country. So much for the weaker sex. Coach Becca Peveto’s LC-M girls bring an impressive senior leadership with Dinah Tippins, Janet Le and Mallory Russell. Nederland might have the best juniors hurdler Kiley Havard and distance runner Ella Mecom. PN-G’s depth has been a bit more than Nederland’s so far and senior Shaelyn Cobb really sparkles in the triple jump. Port Arthur struggles for enough depth against district competition but Memorial owns promising stars – soph sprinter Jada Guilbeau and junior thrower Tatiyana Crane. Three 4A girls have caught my attention, Silsbee’s Ryann Norsworthy in the 100 meters, BC sophomore distance runner Camryn Cross and Hamshire-Fannett’s junior jumper Mallory Urbina. Don’t worry, if I accidentally left out anyone. It’s still only February. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 37, Number 1 _____ Feb. 7, 2024 Seems as if it’s been a long winter by Southeast Texas standards. So it may be awhile before our area high school track and field performers can return anywhere close to top form. Yet here’s the beauty of sports we’ve discovered through 56 years of sports writing – you never know. Not many brilliant minds expected a 5A state football champ two months ago from those purple Indians. Hats off to Jeff Joseph and his folks for doing just that. Why do I mention this football stuff in our first 2024 track report? Because when we report in three months at the state meets, our 409 needs some state champions for the schools to honor. On the subject of the state meet, the schedule places the trip to Austin about 10 days earlier in the calendar year than last year. Of course that also means earlier dates for the district, area and regional meets during April. And, you guessed it. The earlier post-season schedule has required a number of regular-season meets to either be canceled or moved much earlier in this year’s schedule. A small handful of schools, including Nederland, are scheduled to visit Huffman Hargrave high school for a meet this week. Most area teams will wait a week or two. No doubt a large field can be expected next week at Nederland for the Bulldog Relays. That should be a showcase for many of the season’s strongest performers. Quite a few will have to trade in their basketball legs for track and field legs as February and March progress. Who are the premier stars? It’s too early to tell but Morgan Campbell certainly has established herself as a superb distance runner. She was a 5A girls state top 20 finisher in last fall’s UIL cross country championships at Round Rock. We’re also hoping for a great senior year from Beaumont Kelly’s Paris Coleman. Then there’s Vidor senior Raegan Stephenson, who snagged the gold medal in Austin at the 5A girls high jump with a leap of 5-7. If Raegan is properly motivated, she is likely to clear a higher mark now. More than 30 schools have provided us with their season track schedules and we thank them for getting more of those on their school websites this time. Much of my area weekly leaders will depend on e-mails from area coaches and officials. Please send them to [email protected]. My wife Donna is in her fourth year of having kidney dialysis at the Davita Port Arthur location. That greatly limits my active participation.
