[email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, No. 12 ____ _ May 19, 2026 A message to Golden Triangle-area tracksters: Your ol’ Bubba salutes you, congratulates you and thanks you for your performance at the UIL state track and field championships. Our Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange area has had rough visits to Austin in recent years but not this time. It was a week to remember for several young men and women who made our region proud. And that goes for the coaches, advisors and trainers who work with the athletes. Track and field, when done properly, is hard work, with precious little media coverage or outside public attention. That’s why this weekly newsletter exists. It’s a labor of love for the people involved in track. Your author doesn't make a dime from anyone to do it. It's a hobby strictly for the people involved in the sport. The DFW Metroplex had been dominating recent state meets to an almost embarrassing level but not this time. Greater Houston and our neighbors dominated this year. That’s a credit to hard workers like Darrell Granger in Port Arthur, Renwick Johnson in Beaumont, Becca Peveto in north Orange. These are high-quality coaches who have produced athletes to be the best they can be. That’s what life is all about after high school – being the best adults that they can be. Our total board, counting Warren for the first time, includes four GT-area gold medals, two silvers and two bronzes. Six new events produced area-best and a seventh event matched the exact area-best. So here goes the honor roll --- GOLD MEDALISTS 3A Boys 110-Meter Hurdles – Vaughn Westhoven, Warren, junior, 13.94. 4A Girls Shot Put – Madagyn Boudoin, Lumberton, senior, 43-6. 4A Boys High Jump – Kobe Prejean, Hamshire-Fannett, senior, 6-7 5A Boys 1,600-Meter Relay – Port Arthur Memorial, 3:14.69, Coach Darrell Granger (Matthew Christian, Cam’Ron Roberts, Tyson Barnes, Brandon Richards) SILVER MEDALISTS 4A Girls High Jump – Rocsan Hadnot, Jasper, junior, 5-8 5A Boys 800-Meter Run – John Fowler, Beaumont West Brook, junior, 1:52.20 BRONZE MEDALISTS 4A Boys 200-Meter Dash – Sage Gilder, Hamshire-Fannett, junior, 21.37 5A Boys 1,600-Meter Run – John Fowler, Beaumont West Brook, junior, 4:22.70 NEW GOLDEN TRIANGLE-AREA BESTS RECORDED AT THE STATE MEET Vaughn Westhoven, Warren, 13.94; Sage Gilder, H-F, 21.37; John Fowler, WB, 1:52.20; Jaislyn Heater Vidor, 5-8 in 4A girls triple jump; Dinah Tippins, LC-M, 23.78 in girls 4A 200-Meter Dash; LC-M girls 800-Meter Relay, 1:39.65, Coach Becca Peveto (Janet Le, Dinah Tippins, Amaya Meadows, Brianca Barclay) Taking a Titan advantage of their opportunity Tradition must be passed on or it can become a Titanic sinking ship. Tradition can die very easily when schools consolidate. Beaumont and Port Arthur know the difficulties all too well. Students and fans support their Lincoln BumbleBees, their Jefferson Yellow Jackets, their Hebert Panthers, their French Buffaloes…. and then, poof… It’s gone and it’s tough on everyone. Yet in rare instances, with the right people and formula, tradition can endure. LeRoy Leopold and his Lincoln track teams became state champions in the previous century. Leopold coached hard and required his guys to run the quartermile as the backbone of his program. When the Hall of Fame mentor decided to retire, Leopold recommended a replacement in the toddler years at Memorial High School. His assistant Darrell Granger had been the anchorman on a record-holding 4x4 relay team. It was a state record that stood for 17 years. Granger may not have been a carbon copy of Leopold but he was close enough. He coached hard, too. He emphasized the quartermile for his runners, too. Lincoln’s mile relay tradition of success continued with a new school name, new athletes and new colors. Ahh, but track success never is automatic. It requires extra-hard work, continuous coaching and fine-tuning. Relays force a coach to shuffle the deck and insert an alternate or switch a running order. Memorial had not been winning the boys 1,600-meter relay all season. Teams were beating the Titans week after week at nickel-and-dime meets. Even at the 19-5A district meet, Memorial was a lackluster third place at 3:26.72 with Amante Martin, Cam’Ron Roberts, Matthew Christian, and Malcolm McCrea. A week later, Granger added two runners and subtracted two as the Titans improved to 3:16.17 yet they did not capture any area gold medals. So Granger added and subtracted another member for the 5A regional. No wins again and PA settled for a third-place time of 3:12.46 but the Titans had improved their time. Fifteen years ago, the UIL added a ninth state meet entry, lumping the top two finishers in each region plus the best third-place time or length in an event. That’s where the Titans caught a break. A stride behind Iowa Colony and Texas City, Port Arthur still reached Austin’s big dance with the fastest third-place time. Memorial had been rewarded for its flexibility and hard work. Don’t think Granger was finished shuffling his deck before Austin, though. The tinkering and hard work continued. Tyson Barnes replaced Jaylon Gibson at state and was inserted into the third leg of the relay. The winning time (3:14.69) was more than two seconds slower than the regional time. A 200-meter runner for much of the season, Brandon Richards brought home the baton ahead of Texas City, roaring through the last 100 meters. “I knew that if Brandon was close enough to the lead when he got the stick, that we would have a chance,” Granger said. “The thing I was most-proudest of was how Tyson ran well enough to put Brandon in that position.” Announcers at the event described the come-from-behind victory as an “astonishing upset” by a third-place regional finisher. In reality, it’s just an old Port Arthur tradition. PROUDEST MOMENTS FROM THE PRESS BOX THURSDAY You start the three days with a determined Lumberton senior who would not be denied. MADAGYN BOUDOIN equaled her PR and won the gold after entering the competition with the second-longest regional throw. She duplicated her season-best on her second attempt at Mike Myers Stadium, unleashing another toss of 43-6 FRIDAY West Brook junior JOHN FOWLER had the second-fastest state qualifying time in the mile and looked in position to take the lead at the end of the backstretch on the mile’s final lap. Fowler got bumped with 200 to 220 meters left in the race but carried home a gold (1,600) and a bronze (800). Port Arthur junior BRANDON RICHARDS blazed through the deciding anchor lap in 47-flat, overtaking Texas City in the final 100 of the 4x4. Titans knew they had a shot at pulling an upset if Tyson Barnes could run a strong enough third leg to give Richards a chance. Tyson made his coach Darrell Granger proud because Richards was close enough in second place at the early strides of the gun lap. SATURDAY The south wind, recorded at 4.0 meters per second, was well above the 2.0 legal limit. Wind or no wind, C.E. King sophomore DILLON MITCHELL turned into a cyclone at about 50 meters and clocked a 9.92 in the 100. If it had not been wind-aided, the 9.92 would have tied a national HS record. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, No. 11 ____ _May 10, 2026 First off, these are excursions which fans, coaches, athletes and friends remember for the rest of their lives. There’s a job to be done in Austin but have some fun too. The pressure is greater to reach the UIL state championships than to compete at it. Second, expect it to be windy. Don’t be intimidated by the wind or the large crowd at Mike Myers Stadium. This facility was built on a hillside and the typical prevailing south wind will surprise if you’re not ready for it. Third, don’t be intimidated or feel over-confident due to any regional qualifying times. every region contains different climate conditions – different humidity, wind and temperature can make the individual performances vary a whole lot. Our immediate Southeast Texas area is entered in seven events in 3A, eight in 5A and nine in 4A. The following pages contain the events for our area athletes in the lane assignments for running events in all classifications. Class 5A field events are listed in the order of participation. The athletes in Class 3A and 4A field events are not listed in the order of their participation. on Thursday. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 10 When a walker strides into the wind on Port Arthur’s seawall, the Gulf Coast breeze can create the illusion that it’s blowing 20 miles an hour. Then that walker looks at his phone, checks the weather app only to discover it’s blowing only five miles an hour. Appearances can be deceiving. Back in early February, this so-called “expert’’ anticipated that two or three Southeast Texans would compete at the UIL state track and field championships. Let’s think back to how bleak it seemed for this year’s area tracksters from this dumb mind after Nederland’s Bulldog Relays. Ok, we thought Dinah Tippins of Little Cypress and Brandon Richards of Port Arthur would make it to Austin… and maybe an Orangefield pole vaulter probably would, because it’s hard to have a state track meet without an Orangefield pole vaulter. Those modest expectations fooled me again just like the walker at the seawall. Life is not always as it seems. Appearances are delightfully deceiving this year, because Southeast Texas has qualified a full busload of athletes for the state meet May 14-16. Every regional weekend contains its share of tough breaks and disappointments. This year was no exception. A Region III meet in Texas easily can contain the caliber of performances in many other state meets. Eight Golden Triangle high schools qualified athletes for state along with five other area schools near the fringes of the Triangle and schools in our Beaumont Enterprise circulation range. Our list of area-best performances required considerable revision on Sunday evening. The 34 categories (17 boys and 17 girls UIL events) contained 11 new improvements. We have such an extensive crop of state qualifiers that I hope to not leave out any deserving name from the following group. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 9 Our Golden Triangle track and field contingent made a pretty good haul at their respective area meets. Some could have done better but most of the higher quality performers advanced to next weekend’s regional championships. It will matter much more to them on the first Saturday in May if they are able to advance again. Getting to regionals is more of an expected achievement for the top-caliber athlete. Getting to our Texas UIL state championships is more the equivalent of being a state champion in most states. Our list of regional qualifiers takes up an excessive amount of space. So we chose to display names and some photos of the young men and women who won gold medals at the area meets. Yours truly could not have showcased these pictures without help from Gary Stelly at KOGT.com, standout Port Arthur photographer Glenn Dennis, and coaches Becca Peveto at LC-M and Renwick Johnson at Beaumont West Brook. Congrats to Peveto’s girls for winning the area team title with 108 points. 5A AREA CHAMPIONS AT LA PORTE GIRLS: Jalexis Neal, PA Memorial, Sophomore 100-meter dash Addelyn Hooper, Port Neches-Groves, Sophomore High jump Ella Mecom, Nederland, Junior 1,600 and 3,200 Meters Tatiyana Crain, PA Memorial, Junior Shot put & Discus Throws BOYS Joe Bowser, Jr., Beaumont West Brook, Junior Discus Throw John Fowler, Beaumont West Brook, Junior 1,600-meter run Port Arthur Memorial Titans (Darrell Granger) 800-meter relay team (Payton Bell, Cam’Ron Roberts, Malcolm McCrea, Brandon Richards) 4A AREA CHAMPIONS AT MADISONVILLE GIRLS: Dinah Tippins, LC-M, Senior 200-meter dash & Long jump Paisley Angelle, LC-M, Senior 100- & 300-meter hurdles Janet Le, LC-M, Senior Pole vault Magadyn Boudoin, Lumberton, Senior Shot put Ali Bourque, Lumberton, Senior 400-meter dash Jaxon Agerton, Orangefield, Sophomore High jump BOYS: Reece Skinner, Bridge City, Junior Pole vault Tyler White, Lumberton, Senior Long jump Shay Stacy, Vidor, Senior 300-meter hurdles Trenton Smith, Lumberton, Junior 3,200-meter run Lincoln Gaulden, LC-M, Sophomore 110-meter hurdles Vidor Pirates (Brandon Granger) 1,600-meter relay team (Zane Williamson, Brodie Ferguson, Shay Stacy, Gavin Cook) 3A AREA CHAMPIONS AT ANAHUAC GIRLS: Hayley Spears, Orangefield, Senior Discus Throw Mikeala Quave, East Chambers, Junior 300-meter hurdles BOYS: Koa Sides, Orangefield, Sophomore Pole vault Jaxon Agerton, Orangefield, Sophomore High jump 2A AREA CHAMPION AT DEWEYVILLE GIRLS: Valeria Estupinan, Sabine Pass, Junior 1,600 and 3,200 Meters TAPPS 5A AREA CHAMPION AT HOUSTON LUTHERAN SOUTH GIRLS: Jerika Roberts, Beaumont Kelly, Senior Shot Put TAPPS 2A AREA CHAMPIONS AT BRYAN ALLEN ACADEMY BOYS: Beaumont Legacy Christian 400 Meter Relay Team UIL REGIONALS MAY 1 & 2 6A & 5A Region III Championships at Challenger Columbia Stadium, Webster FRIDAY: 3200 meters begin at 8:30 a.m.; Morning field events begin at 9 a.m.; Running prelims at 11:30 a.m.; Afternoon field events at 3 and 5A running prelims at 3:30. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 8 Veteran track and field observers expected nearly half of the area’s season-best performances would improve last week at district meets. Sure enough, they did. Hey, it simply works that way. Athletes realize their seasons are finished if they don’t perform. They want those medals and they want to extend their season. First, we congratulate a few team champions. Coach Kendrick Johnson (standing far left in the above photo) guided West Brook to an impressive team title in 19-5A at Mont Belvieu. The Bruins had 179 points – 30 points more than runner-up Barbers Hill. The host school’s Lady Eagles, under coach Stacy Tucker, captured the girls team honors. Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s tracksters were not in such a sharing mood in the 18-4A meet at West Orange-Stark. Becca Peveto’s girls and Kurt Zihlman’s boys wanted to bring home all the team honors and they did. The Bears barely outdistanced Lumberton by two points while the Lady Bears more than doubled their closest competition coming from Bridge City. The Orangefield Lady Bobcats displayed plenty of dominance at the 22-3A meet in Anahuac. Girls coach Brittney Stevens took home the team title. Coach Fred Gilbert watched his Hardin Hornets claim the honors in the boys division. Individual performances enabled Golden Triangle-area athletes to improve our area-best season numbers in 10 boys and 6 girls events during the district championships. West Brook junior D’Andre Carter led the area in both the boys long and triple jump events. Carter had produced the first 44-0 long jump before the 19-5A meet but he cleared 44-4 at Mont Belvieu. Then there’s another junior who delivers steady late-season progress. And that would delight Nederland girls coach Dale Dial. Her name is Kiley Havard, and what a hard worker she must be. Kiley owned the area’s fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.34 by the end of March. When the calendar turned to April, Havard just turned it up a notch. She recorded a 15.12 on April 2 at LC-M’s Battlin’ Bear Relays. Her season-best time lowered to 14.57 last week at district. When it comes to a consistent champion, LC-M’s senior pole vaulter Janet Le (pictured here) delivers meet after meet. Her best had been 10-6 before district. Janet equaled that mark last Monday at West Orange. Year-in and year-out, Memorial’s Darrell Granger has a history of delivering the finest in area track athletes. Granger likes to Port Arthur’s Titans peak at the most significant events. They might do exactly that in 2026. The Lady Titans have been showcasing the work of shot and discus thrower Tatiyana Crain and sprinter Jalexis Neal. The guys don’t want to be overlooked with Brandon Richards and Matthew Christian producing area-best times, along with the 4x2 relay squad. Those Bruins have kept being champions, starting with Joe Bowser in the discus and John Fowler in the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter events. Let’s all keep striving this week at the area meets. Here’s where they’re going this week WEDNESDAY 19-4A/20-4A Area Championship at Falcon Stadium, Huffman Hamshire-Fannett, Hardin-Jefferson, Huffman, Liberty, Livingston, Shepherd and Tarkington’s top four qualifiers at the 19-4A District championships. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 7 April means elimination time for most area track and field athletes because only the best of the best advance to the regional and state meets on the warm weekends of May. While there are some events on this week’s schedule, the primary focus of these athletes – wherever they are – needs to be on next week’s district championships and maintaining sharp physical shape and proper rest for those events. A district meet is becoming more and more of a tuneup in its own right because the top four finishers in an event are permitted to advance to the following week’s area meet. Our list of Golden Triangle-area leaders experienced a large amount of change following last week’s extremely busy agenda. Silsbee did more than host a meet. The Lady Tigers took over the leader’s spots in the girls 4x1 and 4x2 exchanges. One of those relay members, Madison Hill, captured the top performance to date in the triple jump by practically reaching 37 feet. Before leaving the Silsbee meet, we need to send a big thank you to Cayla Ford for assisting me on Monday with providing the results. I regret that I had to miss last week’s good area meets due to a groin injury which required quite a bit of treatment as well as an ultrasound on Thursday. That should not sideline my presence at numerous district meets but beware that potential rain episodes often alter those district championship schedules. Before we visit last week’s individual stuff, let’s recognize LC-M’s girls and Nederland’s boys for capturing team titles at Silsbee. Fourteen new area-best numbers – 11 girls events and three boys – were recorded at the Tiger Relays. Senior Dinah Tippins of LC-M equaled the previous best in the girls 100 meters with a 12.08. Her teammates Janet Le and Paisley Angelle owned sole possession of the lead in the pole vault and the 300-meter hurdles with their Silsbee outings. The boys and girls leaders in the shot put throw improved their previous area best lengths. That’s good work by Lumberton’s Madagyn Boudoin and PN-G’s Ace Reeves. Memorial’s Titan Relays contained plenty of sturdy competition for nearby schools from outside visitors around Houston. The discus throw produced two near area best numbers. Congratulations to Port Arthur’s Tatiyana Crain and West Brook’s Joseph Bowser. Titans senior Matthew Christian duplicated the area’s fastest open-quarter time in 48.93, while sophomore sprinter Jalexis Neal clocked a 24.43 in the girls 200 meters. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 6 As you can see, there’s not much room to write when West Brook’s John Fowler and Memorial’s Jalexis Neal take up all of the space but these athletes earned it. That’s OK. Folks don’t read as much anymore anyway. Fowler and Neal earned photos. Each of these athletes delivered area-best times in two individual events last Friday at the C.E. King Panther Relays. A junior with the Bruins, Fowler won the 1,600 meters and took second in the 800. A sophomore with the Lady Titans, Neal won the 100 meters and took second in the 200. Two other athletes established new individual area-best numbers. Port Arthur’s Brandon Richards was third in the 100 meters in his event with a 10.84. Freshman Meribeth Owens from Beaumont’s Veritas Classical private school became the new area leader in the girls 800 meters. Big meets on the agenda are scheduled for this week. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 5 An abbreviated schedule with the overlapping spring break weeks delayed several of our region’s stronger track athletes from improving on their season-best performances but a few top numbers resulted from last week’s meets at Orangefield and Sour Lake. Most interesting item could be Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Dinah Tippins (handing the baton to Jordyn Chargois in this adjacent photo). Tippins was timed at 24.70, improving her area lead in that event. She placed sixth in the state meet at the same event last year in a time of 24.60. Dinah’s Orangefield time outlasted teammate Brianca Barclay by nearly a full second. Why do we list this comparison? Two reasons. First, our LC-M sprinter has two months to work on the possibility of lowering that time if she’s able to return again to state. Second, and more importantly, track and field – when practiced properly – is HARD work. This sport lacks the team glamour of football, basketball and baseball. It generally attracts very little spectator or media interest. If people jump up and down about it, those people usually jump up and down after the athlete’s accomplishment. LC-M’s girls have captured the team title in each meet they have entered this spring. That speaks to the work of coach Becca Peveto and the work habits that already have been in place. But hard work must continue. The margins in track success usually are extremely tiny. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 4 OK, not bad.... Another solid week of track and field performances from our athletes at the Southeast Texas high school meets, especially at Vidor and Houston. The weather cooperated again and 16 new area-best numbers resulted in the 34 UIL state events on the first March days. Golden Triangle athletes brought home 10 gold medals at meets in Houston, Huffman or College Station and that certainly has a way of shortening the ride back home. Even the Vidor Pirate Relays produced seven new area-best numbers – more than the Vidor meet normally has produced. Congrats go out to Hamshire-Fannett’s boys and Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s girls for capturing the team titles at Vidor. Now let’s dig into the impressive athletes. Throughout most of its 20-plus years, Port Arthur Memorial’s boys have been more dominant than the girls track team. Evidently, these 2026 Lady Titans are tired of sitting in the back seat. Coach Tamela Roberts saw her girls capture four gold medals and deliver two other GT-area best relay times at the Sonny Donaldson Relays on Friday at Aldine Davis high school. Darrell Granger’s boys added two golds and one area-best time but it’s unusual for the girls to outshine the boys in Port Arthur’s track spotlight. Tatiyana Crain swept gold in the shot and discus. Jalexis Neal won the 100 meters and ran the anchor on the winning sprint relay with Ariana Leday, Jada Guilbeau and Alicia Francis running ahead of Neal. Guilbeau and Neal comprised half of an area-best mile relay team along with Delia and Torrie Washington. Nederland’s boys also had to take a back seat. The Nederland girls delivered three new area-best times at two different venues. Kiley Havard, Marie Hawkins, and Avery Parigi carted home gold from Vidor with Havard notching new area-best times in both hurdle races. Ella Mecom trimmed off five seconds from her previous best time in the 1,600 at Texas A&M’s Bluebonnet Invitational. Oh yeh, and Mecom’s 3,200 time of 11:27.04 on the previous week at Bridge City broke a 25-year-old Nederland girls school record set by Lauren Pinder, according to Dale Dial. Your track writer definitely doesn’t keep up with those school records. So I’ve got to trust coach Dial on that one. Beaumont ISD’s track and field programs are not quite as established as some of their neighbors. First-year mentor Caleb Ceaser certainly is attempting to elevate United’s program off the ground floor. It’s obvious that Renwick Johnson and Kirby Jones have the Bruins starting to make more noise on the west end. West Brook’s boys came home from Houston with three gold medals and two new area-best outings. Junior Joe Bowser improved his area lead in winning the discus at 153-10. Terence Mouton produced the fastest area time to date in the open quarter, clocking a 48.93 in the prelims. Versatile junior D’Andre Carter won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.93. Another mighty good WB junior, John Fowler, improved his 1,600-meter lead by more than two seconds at A&M’s meet. We have an abbreviated schedule of meets coming up now. But great performances still may emerge from those meets. [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 3 OK, our Golden Triangle-area high school track and field coaches and athletes have a lot to be thankful for as far as February was concerned. We had cooperative weather for our area meets at H-F, BC, PN-G and Nederland. No freezing cold nor rain. Unless I’m unaware, we did not sustain a rash of significant early season injuries either. Our last newsletter posted a Triangle-area leader in all 34 UIL state events and we have some impressive news from the meets on the final February weekend. Twenty-six of the 34 events produced an area-best improvement in the top performance. That number – 13 girls and 13 boys events – impressed this track observer. What impressed the most? That’s tough but Port Arthur Memorial junior Tatiyana Crain threw the discus 129-4 and that broke a 15-year-old school record in that event. LC-M’s Janet Le clears 10-0 in the pole vault Roger Cacak/kogt.com photo It’s a crowded field at Bridge City in the boys 800-meter run Roger Cacak/kogt.com photo My information is based on the Memorial school website which displays the school record in the girls discus in 2011 at 113-10.5 by Alyssa Remo. Now, it’s time to discuss a couple of standout coaches, Renwick Johnson at one end of the Triangle and Becca Peveto at an opposite end. Johnson wears a visible smile because Beaumont West Brook’s boys are humming. Peveto has enjoyed seeing her Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s girls dominate the area’s team competition. The Bruins sport area leaders in eight of 17 boys events. The West End tracksters posted six area-best performances Friday in Rosenberg at the Lamar Consolidated Relays. The lone gold medal winner, junior John Fowler, delivered a most impressive time of 9:32.92 in the 3,200-meter run. Recognition also belongs to fellow juniors Aidan McLaughlin in the mid-distance events, Joe Bowser in the throwing events and D’Andre Carter in the jumps. While we honor LC-M’s girls, we pay tribute to the team champions from the Cardinal and Longhorn Relays – the Lady Bears, the Nederland boys of coach Michael Broussard and the Hamshire-Fannett boys and girls of coach Jeremy Abshier. LC-M racked up 142.5 points at Bridge City to take its second team title in as many outings. Janet Le and Dinah Tippins were the individual winners along with two relay squads. PN-G, Nederland, and Lumberton will give LC-M a competitive run as well but those three may lack LC-M’s depth in the point totals. If Abshier’s Longhorns can continue to improve their times in relay events, those H-F country boys are going to go somewhere… and it might be clear to Austin. Port Arthur’s girls are mighty young but the Lady Titans can say they made a big splash Friday at the Spartan Relays in Stafford. Memorial came home with eight new area-best performances, five in the girls events and three in the boys. Crain’s school record discus throw jumped to the top of the list but the work of Delia Washington, Jalexis Neal, Jada Guilbeau and Jahzarea Jacquet belonged among the more honorable mention athletes as well. Here’s a word of thanks to long-time friend and media brother Gary Stelly of kogt.com for all his help and support with this week’s newsletter. Roger Cacak took these photos and that reminds me to encourage other photos to be sent in upcoming meets. E-mail them, as well as results, to [email protected] . [email protected] Tom Halliburton’s Track Volume 38, Number 2 A wise man once wrote “comparison is the thief of joy’’ and since we’re here to bring joy to our area track and field community, we shall refrain from making many early season comparisons. It’s too soon to know a lot about area performances in this outdoor season. Some teams have attended only one meet, a few none at all. There are a handful conclusions to draw already though. The Bruins and the Titans are pretty much neck-and-neck in a boys sprint relay that ought to become quite a show at the 19-5A district meet in April. West Brook coach Renwick Johnson served as an assistant coach under Port Arthur’s Darrell Granger. There should be an entertaining amount of competition between their squads this spring. Memorial seems stronger in the shorter races while WB owns an edge in the longer ones with junior John Fowler. West Brook looks deeper in the field events so far. Beaumont United lacks WB’s depth for sure but first-year head coach Caleb Ceasar has a good chance of owning the area’s best sprinter Emmanuel Shaffers-Jones. And, as usual, the area pole vault leader hails from where? Orangefield, of course. It seems as if it’s been that way forever in Bobcat Country. So much for the weaker sex. Coach Becca Peveto’s LC-M girls bring an impressive senior leadership with Dinah Tippins, Janet Le and Mallory Russell. Nederland might have the best juniors hurdler Kiley Havard and distance runner Ella Mecom. PN-G’s depth has been a bit more than Nederland’s so far and senior Shaelyn Cobb really sparkles in the triple jump. Port Arthur struggles for enough depth against district competition but Memorial owns promising stars – soph sprinter Jada Guilbeau and junior thrower Tatiyana Crane. Tom Halliburton’s Track
Volume 38, Number 2
A wise man once wrote “comparison is the thief of joy’’ and since we’re here to bring joy to our area track and field community, we shall refrain from making many early season comparisons.
Three 4A girls have caught my attention, Silsbee’s Ryann Norsworthy in the 100 meters, BC sophomore distance runner Camryn Cross and Hamshire-Fannett’s junior jumper Mallory Urbina.
Don’t worry, if I accidentally left out anyone. It’s still only February.

[email protected] Tom’s Track Volume 38, Number 1 Feb. 13, 2026 My apologies for missing last year. My wife passed away on Jan. 30, 2025 and your ol’ Bubba needed time to bounce back from that. I’m back but I should have sent out this opening installment sooner than this. I’m sure there are dozens of new high school area track coaches and athletes for me to learn in a big hurry. But I will give it my best shot. First, my new e-mail address is [email protected]. That is significant for all you folks who will host meets. I’m sure my attendance at some of these area meets will be hit and miss, and probably mostly miss. So please e-mail your meet schedules and your meet results before and after to this e-mail -- [email protected] As always, I will attempt to provide a list of area leaders as the information can be accurately determined. Thanks for your help because I’m sure I will need as much of it as possible. We begin with a tentative season schedule. Of course, these dates and locations are subject to change but here’s what I have as of Feb. 13. …. Let’s have a strong track season, tom halliburton if you would like to receive pdf-formatted updates in track season, please email [email protected] AREA OUTDOOR HIGH SCHOOL TRACK SCHEDULE FOR FEBRUARY Feb. 13 NEDERLAND BULLDOG RELAYS Feb. 19 PN-G JOE WILLIAMSON RELAYS Feb. 19 SPLENDORA WILDCAT RELAYS Feb. 20 CLEAR SPRINGS CHARGER RELAYS Feb. 20 DAYTON QUINN WOOD RELAYS Feb. 21 HUMBLE SAM MOSLEY RELAYS Feb. 26 BRIDGE CITY CARDINAL RELAYS Feb. 26 HAMSHIRE-FANNETT LONGHORN RELAYS Feb. 27 CONROE TIGER RELAYS Feb. 27 LAMAR CONSOLIDATED RELAYS Feb. 27 LIBERTY TRINITY VALLEY RELAYS tom track 1.pdf
