  2. Great opening games this week, Crosby at New Caney, La Porte at Clear Brook and this one. To me Nederland has been solid defensively for the last 3 decades, and west orange has been state title contenders the last 4 years. BUT, because he has so few starters returning, old school coach Cornell (not calling names as I am close to his age and experience in coaching) was smart in making it hard on his young uns, to sharpen the iron for the playoffs. They could be 0-3 as some one else said, but gain a year of experience in less than a month.

So Nederland 17 Orange 13. ( only fear is Nederland often starts slow, at least with their previous HC).

  3. Morning men, I have had the pleasure of working with the Diboll Lumberjack football team these past two days completing ads for their football program. Good coaching staff, HC Morrison has SE ties as former orange field D.C. Under Flannigan. Kids look good, great feet, good speed and size, seemed Very discipline. Any thoughts? I looked on smoaky and a few said they believe the jacks are a dark horse to win the region?? Thoughts, anyone with former experience of school, community etc. Franklin, the beast from central Texas near my Marlin home is predicted to win in DCTF.

Nederland's start in the last month of April until the start of the season..... :)

Two a days is a very ambiguous term, means different things to different people er  .. coaches. Rules are meant to be bent is what i've been told.

  5. In fact I was in the jewel of the forest a couple of weeks ago. Met an impressive young coach, coach Bronson. I was there training for my new job. The company i now work for is Txtreme and we do the football programs for many schools in Texas along with sport posters and police/fire posters. I spoke to several coaches and players and was impressed. I told them i felt that this may be the year to get West Orange since they lost so many starters. I know of West orange and its legend, so much because I worked with Andre Bevil a couple of years, another fine young coach. Once a bulldog always a bulldog, so i will be pulling for Jasper. In fact i am so EXCITED for the season. True I won't be coaching but there is a sense of relief and an utter joy that i don't have to enter the classroom of tech zombies we call students. I started in 84, and boy education has changed. Still a lot of good kids, but the way it is run from the top allows for kids to be idiots--of course i am not talking about yours--they never do anything wrong?

  6. On Tuesday my retirement from 33 years of coaching in east Harris county schools is official. I have been an avid fan of this site,  lurking online to not upset any future employer as I was heavy into trying to land my first head coaching gig. Never happened, bridesmaid 4-5 times. I got a great sales job opportunity from a fellow alumni Marlin Bulldog and started 2 weeks ago in jasper. Just wanted to say love your discussions, your passions, and so do other coaches. Some of your viewpoints are spot on, some ridiculous. Just because you haven't coached high school ball doesn't mean you're wrong. Unfortunately some high school  coaches act like bill O'Brien and talk down to everyone not in the club. That is just insecurities on their part and I hope the Texans overcome bad head coaching again, thank God Romeo Cornell is back. I will be an active member now along with other boards. I know of smoak for my central, deep east fix but is there a site for Houston area?

  7. Jridge, man I want to meet you somewhere and buy you lunch. In my opinion you are spot on. I have 32 years in this business of coaching young men and I have seen a lot as well as experiencing my own interactions with coaches at my high school of Marlin Texas. But your statement of finding someone who actually cares for the young men as well as wins and losses is the key. When I was DC at Crosby in the 90's, we scrimmaged Ozen and I was impressed with the talent. We also played lamarque twice in the dome during those years and Ozen was the only team that had talent close to lamarque, now they didn't have the experience, coaching, support and other important variables. Unfortunately in our business many coaches are $ hoppers, looking to increase salary or if they are older, looking to increase their retirement multiplier. They are smooth talkers and tell the search or interview committee what they want to hear instead of having that committee due hard core investigating of the REAL reason someone wants to be the head coach of your foreign school. I have had the honor of working for 9 different coaches at 4 different schools, clear lake, Crosby, Aldine Eisenhower , and Baytown sterling. Two were truly great and successful and really cared about their kids and  this led to their success, Coach Stewart of clear lake and coach Carson of big Ike . Two others really cared for kids but weren't as successful for various reasons but I am proud to say I worked for them because they developed men. A few of the others were dull, unimaginative and thus unsuccessful. 3 others were cancers and harmed kids, I wouldn't spit on them to put out a fire on their burning body, yet they still get head jobs today because they get over on those who really do the hiring and are too lazy to research. Jridge I hope you are on the search or interview committee. I like to give the example of UT-AM with regards to coaching. Yes I am a UT grad but also a big supporter of AM ( my most successful player was Steve McKinney an Aggie, then colt, then Texan) and cheer for everything Texas. I had the honor of attending the last ut-am game at Kyle field. Before the game the Aggies HC, I forgot his name which tells you how little impact he had on Aggies nation but especially his players. Met the Aggies seniors as the were announced near mid field. They all came to coach former Texan tight end coach and just shook hands, I was appalled! The week before UT did the same senior recognition and players as well as their families met Mack Brown at the 50 where EVERYONE was crying and hugging. A M hired the no name coach because he looked like them and was a good old boy, thus no one remembers his name, yet former UT players are naming their sons Mack. I know and agree Mack overstayed by 2 years, but that showed why one program was successful and the other a non factor. I emulate Mack because one day I got to answer to St. Peter that I did all I could to help these young men become great men. That is why I still grind after 32 years. MUCH RESPECT TO YOU JRIDGE!!!!!

  8. I agree with fun times as long as he is describing the athlete, but he left out one big one- physical dimensions and movement. No matter how hard that little engine tried to get over that hill, the diesel locomotive blew them all away and was coveted by all major universities. Their are different viewpoints in play, a college coach sees 6' 5", and 4.4 at a legit combine, while a parent uses emotion to plead, have you seen his tape- how hard he works- emotions clog vision - meat markets, for a fee will agree with mommy and daddy, and blame high school coaches, sorry but truth! I know there are exceptions, but we are talking 1-1,000,000,000
  9. Boy haven't checked site in a while, in my opinion both dueling banjos have some validity to their argument. I've worked for 2 great coaches, 2 sorry a-- coaches, and some regular ones. I've never witnessed a coach , even the 2 sorry coaches ( one who continually gets HC jobs) keep someone from getting to the next level if they want to get there. As HS coaches we do have relationships with colleges, so we are honest for future recruits possibilities. We also highlight the positives, but are honest with deficiencies also. College coaches, especially D-1, know the game, they watch tape, they know personalities of coaches, kids, and parents along with their college financial boosters. If a child is a D-1 athlete, there are plenty of schools that will take a chance on him no matter what his hs coach says. It is a game like getting a girlfriend and all parties are well versed in the chase. If the player is a marginal college player he needs to attend showcases and make grades ( student/athletes show their true character on their report cards, sad but TRUE) but coaches can help a little here. In this day of too much media, there are not many kids that are overlooked like there were in the 60's and 70's. Just my opinion. Go Rockets
  10. Awesome, love me some defensive soccer! As a football coach, on the defensive side, for over 31 years I hear all the time from IGNORANT football coaches about how soccer is boring, is communist, is for girls. These are the same coaches that blame their lack of success on athletes, parents, and community. Like Jerry Stewart used to tell me, these coaches couldn't recognize a good athlete if they kicked them in the as_! Soccer is about leverage, physicality, organization, and drawing blood, either your opponents or yours!! Go Lufkin, hit them in the mouth, lead with the screws, score one goal, and take the state championship and their girlfriend!!!!!!!
