  1. Very deserving for him and family. I played against his Silsbee team in 78 in second round where William Arline, Doug Shankle, Craig McGallion and a fast quarterback beat us by 7 in last seconds. Played in all star game with Craig and have crossed paths with the coaching family on and off the past 28 years and have always been impressed by their tremendous character which undoubtedly came from Stud's leadership.
  2. Sports society has changed so much from the 60's and 70's when the NFC and AFC had two reps each. Look at the NFL today. The same with high school, some GREAT teams that finished 2nd with no hope of seeing if they were better than the ONE play that caused them to stay home.  The 4 playoff team rule, I believe is good, we shouldn't pick and choose one team and say that is the reason a 4th shouldn't be allowed, because we can also check history and find 4th place teams that BEAT 1st place teams from other districts. Then should we not allow an entire district because Joe Bob said the district is soft?? Make the rule follow the rule and it will all come out in the end. Not a good argument about Kirbyville. It is so much more VALID than the BCIS system. The older I get I try not to look back and compare because I often look through rose colored glasses. 35 years ago I remember being 6' 2"  195 lbs and ran a 4.4 because with time the past is always better. Live today, look forward to tomorrow, but stop looking back to a rose colored past.
  3. I was there at Jerry Jones stadium and it was tremendous. To the coaches who are against it, I ask you what sport in Texas allows coaches to decide the state championship other than football. For the public and teams (weather not a problem in dome and Dallas is the most central location with this type of stadium) it is best. All other forms of football have a designated place for the championship, check college and pro. I just wish the good Lord allows me to one day coach in this venue. Being there is much better than watching on TV. I met a lot of fans from all over Texas who follow HS football and loved it. :D
  4. I coached Johnnie- great RB and great young man. I believe you also have to include Marcus Worthington (Clack) in the talk. All the other names are also great candidates. I coached Trinity during his senior year, which wasn't as good as his soph year according to the tape I saw. I coached Cottens two sons who were unbelieveable athletes who eventually specialized in baseball. If their Dad was as good as I heard, he would be up there. I coached Jerome Lockett son who played linebacker and nose for me, tremendous athlete, heard Dad was better. Cartwright is the one I always heard of as the best. Great Topic.
  5. I know that I am like a lot of ya'll, played in late 70's or early 80's--but I disagree with most of you who think that the playoffs are too saturated--I have coached 28 years and Memorial is another example of WHY having 4 teams in your district go to your playoffs is a good thing. Easy to jump on the bandwagon of the "good old days", but I am old and crusty like a lot of ya'll, but the good old days are often seen through rose colored glasses. I also believe there needs to be a 16 team playoff in D-1 football like other divisions (not sure of the #  in D-2 etc..) Good luck to Memorial and all the other teams in Texas. If you love football, like me, life is good right now.
  6. This is a great post and jab--very knowledgeable fans- maybe coaches?? I wish I didn't have an assignment against a "non talented North Shore team", I know --oxymoron, I would definitely be in Dayton. I can't imagine the money being talked at the plants???? This is good high school football and why it is easily the most popular/passionate sport outside of college/professional in the world. We all played on Friday and know the rush of playing especially your next door BLOOD rival. These feelings weren't quite this way when I was at Crosby ten to twenty years ago. Good luck to both the Cougars and Flan, and Broncos and Stewart. Could be an epic--but often these could become onesided??
  7. Very inappropriate CougTalk. If anything Coach Stewart should be lauded for keeping him both eligible and playing football during his time in Dayton. No doubt that Dugat was given special treatment during his high school years, not necessarily by Coach Stewart alone, but by the entire Dayton ISD and surrounding community. Dugat is human and no one could keep this preferable attention from affecting his psyche. So when he goes to big university where he doesn't have the support system he had in his little hometown, he makes wrong decisions which AJ did. It is part of growing up--just that AJ's growth is documented in the media. Don't hate him or Coach Stewart OR let envy show on your part. He was a special player and they are not always the easiest to handle. But COach STewart in my eyes has always put team first. When I coached with him at CLear Lake, we had a potentially 3 or 4 round team in the spring that was a little void of skill players. We got a move in from Houston Madison who was first team receiver and cornerback, and was in all honor classes. After two weeks, he stole our noseguards Jordans. WHen Coach Stewart found this out, he told the kid that he was sorry, but family don't steal from family and he wouldn't be a part of his team. As a young coach, I was mentally hoping Jerry would give him a second chance- this kid was SPECIAL. Jerry had integrity. We still went 2 rounds that year with character. THis is why players run through brick walls for Coach Stewart. Give him his profs, but don't let the heat of the moment (game with Crosby)blur his integrity. His track record speaks for itself.
  8. Very good post-- I usually use this site to see what the public thinks of football in the area. Coaches do read these though, and we find them somewhat amusing and educational. Some are senseless and some take a very good point. I feel this post is spot on. I worked with Jerry Stewart for 3 years ( I am currently in my 28th year) and he still operates with the same criterian he used at Clear Lake in the late 80's early 90's. His kids always are physical, mistake free, and playing their best at the end of the year. His methods have definitely shaped the way I coach, and I believe most of his former assistants would agree with me. Football is a very simple game of blocking and tackling, and Jerry has always been a master of teaching both.

  9. I will be hosting a free strength and nutrition clinic for all southeast texas high school and juinor high coaches of all sports on Jan. 20 at 7-10 pm at Goose Creek Memorial HS. The clinic will be given by Dan Riley, NFL strength coach of over 27 years with the Redskins and Texans (also Penn St. and Army) and Roberta Anding who is the Texan dietician and a Rice professor. Please pass this info down to your high school coaches as they will provide sound strength and nutrition advice for our athletes. They are experts in their fields and so often we as coaches have to make strength and nutrition decisions for our teams, players, and parents, but we don't have their level of expertise. The public is also invited, but both public and coaches must secure a spot by emailing me at      [email protected]  and give me a list of those for sure attending. I am sure we can all learn a lot. I want to especially thank Al Richard, GCM principal for allowing this to happen.

  10. I have to agree that the Crosby Dayton game is not a rivalry game. With Crosby winning it may become more of one because Dayton will play it with more emotion. but because it has been so one sided in recent times it cannot be so classified. In my belief rivalry games are Clear Lake-Clear Creek, DeerPark-Laporte, Sterling-Lee, PNG-Nederland, Temple-Belton, even WestBrook-PAM. I know I extended the reaches of southeast texas a bit, and I know there are many 2 and 3A games I am not familiar with. In the past Dayton-Liberty used to be a good one just like CE King-Crosby in the late 80's and early 90's. Texas - Oklahoma is a rivalry game, but Texas - Texas A M is not as good as it used to be. WHat do ya'll think?
  11. There is a freshman from Baytown Sterling named Jamar Gibson who started at safety for the Rangers. He is 6' 2" 200 pounds, fast, probably a 4.55-4.6. His older brother starts for Kilgore at guard, but Jamar is a SKILL player. He played a lot of receiver also, probably had over 20 receptions in limited action. He was voted to 2nd team all district safety in a district where there is a lot of competition at skill position. Oh  yeah, he is a great kid, yes sir and no sir. I wish there were more of him.
  12. Great Post by Kindafunny. As a coach we should be held responsible to coach ALL student athletes, whether male or female, football or basketball or baseball or soccer or track, as if they were all possibly D-1 athletes because THEY ALL ARE!! And if you coach, and don't follow that idea, then you are doing your student athletes a disservice. Or if you are too tired to work to help them get into college for athletics or just to become a future coach/teacher, you need to get out of the profession. There are a lot of coaches that are too lazy or think too highly of themselves to go the extra mile for ALL student athletes. The true D-1 athletes will get attention from those college coaches. It is the ones that are capable of playing D-2, D-3, NAIA, or juinor college that need the high school coaches attention. I have made it a point to train all like D-1 prospects and work like the devil to get all others interest from the lower college levels. Student athletes can read a coach very quickly and tell whether they are self-serving OR student/athlete serving.
Don't get me wrong there are a lot of great ones out there who are student first. My mentors Jerry Stewart of Dayton and Kent Bachtel of Waco Midway are definitely student first. Other coaches I've worked with that I would put in that category are Todd Schoppe (now AD at Laporte), Mike Bass (now Ad at Alvin), Coach Carson at Woodlands College Park, Dexter Wesley the OC at Aldine, Coach Simmons at Aldine (formerly of Smiley), and Bruce Bell formerly of Forest Brook and North Texas U. You also don't have to look any further than some of your youth leagues. There is no pay there just love for the kids. I know there are some bad apples in youth sports, just like in high school sports, but there are some youth coaches that I would like to have on my staff because I coached them throughout high school and I truly know their character. One that is like that is a Barbers Hill parent, Marcus Hamilton, who tries to work out BH athletes in the summer to help out the program. He has his heart in the right place and I wish he had a teaching certificate - I would hire him in an instant. He is the type of community member that makes Barbers Hill a great place to live.
  13. You are right on!!! Baytown Sterling exposed PAM in their game. And once you are weakness is exposed on video, the "great coaches and staffs will use it against you". The offensive coordinator at Sterling is one of those, and he found the weakness in bits and pieces from PAM 3 games before Sterling. This is his second year at Sterling and has done an excellent job with below-below-below-average athletes this year. He did very good last year with average athletes helping STerling get their first state playoff reward in over 20 years. The funny thing is he was a FINALIST for both the PAM and Baytown Lee jobs!!!!! Can you imagine either Lee's or PAM's offense under his direction? It would be incredible--whoever makes him a HEAD COACH will be labeled a "genius school district for finding such a diamond in the rough", but astute football fans can see his potential at what he has done at Sterling with the worst athletes in the district. Find out what he did at Mesquite when he was there--they were a BEAST!
