the "illegal aliens" you are talking about are not the kids.... that is the parents.... kids born in America are Americans even if their parents are illegal... as for meal credit... you are so off base... lots of single income households that are uneducated and working for min wage.. those kids need the meal program.. as for the coaches.... for the 10th time i have never put them down... i know they are working hard... but they are getting 2 paychecks, and the district has to pay extra for hiring a retired teacher... when times call for cuts... I can see why they are being let go... many teachers who are getting 1 paycheck are getting caned around the state.. -
This is a ridiculous thread. First off how on earth can you compare 2 legends of coaching who have given and given to a community time and again to a greenhorn fresh out of college who doesnt know squat. If stats prove correct 40% of these greenhorns will be out of coaching and into another profession within 3 years and over 50% out of the profession within 5 years. If possibly the greatest high school coach in Texas were still alive would he to fall victim to this? There are so many ways to save a district money. Workshops, fat central offices, federal programs, breakfast and lunch programs, educating illegals ... We should not be cutting staff. We definately should not be cutting some of our best staff based on age.
Even the great “legendary†coach had to start somewhere. I have nothing against these coaches. But when the state is 28 billion behind… Cuts have to be made.. and cutting teachers that have already retired is one way to do it… WT will just have to train who he gets… does not mean it will be someone right out of college….heck our school district near Houston will lose 3.5-5.2 million alone.. As for cutting breakfast and lunch for the kids…. That is crazy… some of these kids only meals are at school… and work shops are made to educate the teachers on new ways to educate students... if teachers dont trying to get better then how can they expect the students to... And educating illegals… that would mean more cuts for teachers… I agree some districts are not spending their money wisely… but they are just dealing with what they have to work with... remember we vote for school board members who then vote on personal… (Superintendants) which make spending decisions… if you don’t like what is happening in your school district, then run for office or vote on someone who will do the job the way you want it done.. If anyone is to blame… it is us.. -

Find out what the income is for college graduates with 10+ years experience in the area(do not include teachers).
why not compare?? we are talking about the community that pays for the teachers.... but if you want statistics here they are... this will explain why there is cut backs in the Newton area.... Newton has experienced a 10% drop of population... why have more teachers if you don't have the students... Newton has a 12% unemployment rate.. hard to raise money with that.... people are not going to buy property with no money..68% of people own homes in Newton and 21% make less than 10,000 a year.. It is hard to compare college graduates with 10+ years of experience when only 9% of people who graduate from Newton get bachelors degrees... compared to 23% state average... And I bet most of the Newton's 9% college graduates have left the area to find better jobs... not many high paying jobs in Newton... newton's population only has 47% with HIGH SCHOOL DEGREES... I can also bet that most of the college degrees that live in Newton are teachers... either way a teacher, in newton, is a high paying job as compared to the community average salary..
All of these numbers look good except they are totally wrong for budget numbers except number of students. The largest part of the school budget comes from the state, not local taxes or any of these other statistics you have quoted. ADA money. And if I follow your logic, I'm one of the ignorant, penniless, barefoot fools that live here. Come on down and I'll show you how to play "deliverence" on my banjo.
i believe i said MOST not ALL... the satitics are just facts...just because you fall on the other side of these statistics does not mean it is not happening in the community... and just beacuse someone did not graduate from college does not make them a "redneck". I never put down Newton...or yourself.. just gave facts why 2 long time coaches were let go.... and yes a large number of education money does come from the state but countys also collect a property tax that rolls in to funding for education at your local schools.. that is why bigger citys pay teachers higher salarys... more propery owners.... as for you playing a banjo IDK... -

is that what i said... except leaving out they have to sign by aug. or they can draft the kid next year... dont know could have typed it wrong..... bottom line a club has to shell out big money to get him for the next 3 years.. and really big money is 60,000+ and 4 years to any college he wants... lots of club offers will put the college thing in.... so the kids see they are not really losing money... -

He could have gone to a Juco but most clubs will not pay big money to a kid that is going Juco... they can draft him next year and wait and see what he does... or see if he gets hurt they are not losing money because they have not paid him.. you can get drafted and not sign... just means if the kid decides to go pro by aug. they have the rights to him.... If you go D1 you are not eligible for the draft till you are a JR... now Gabby has already signed with a D1 school.. Lamar... this could be a power move on his part.... a club is going to have to pay him big money or lose him for 3 years.. -
I am one of the old ones and remember a movie that the plot was to kill everyone when they reached 30. Seemed like a good idea until you reached 30, then ..... I do take exception to the idea that younger is better, more in the know on technology idea. I've paid for my kids to graduate from the University of Texas and I don't think in higher education they tend to stick with the younger is better idea. There are advantages to both and I don't believe they are mutually exclusive. There is no way to man all positions with nothing but "old" teachers, but there is also no way to man all positions with nothing but young teachers either. Especially in the poorer, rural areas. Many teachers over the years have left the profession for better paying jobs in the private sector, not just young or old but both. Ideas made into law that make education spend money in ways that are not in the best interest of those your trying to educate are also to blame. I'm sure in every corporation there are provisions for "no employee left behind".
true..i also see both sides... there is something to gain by experience.. my grandfather is a retired iron worker. there are somethings i would take his advice on but. do i want him or when constructing a massive building..heck i think he would still use products that have abestis in it... and i agree that the way our state spends money is crazy... but we vote for those who are in power and make those laws... kinda of hard to blame someone when we as a state put those people in office... as for the "no employee left behind" there are many of corporations that face the same problems that our school districts are facing now..low budget and that cut backs are comming... they have to find a way to create more money or cut back on spending.. do you think they are going to lose money because Joe Shmow has been with the company for 30 years... -

And the moon is made of green cheese....??? you kinda just proved my point with a OLD saying like that.. I have no problems with the 2 coaches let go... i know they have done a lot for their comunity... I just understand the reasons for letting them go... remember they are being let go for the teaching part... not for the coaching part... they can still coach... just have to take a different position... -
This summer a group of players put together by Rangers scout Randy Taylor (It was mostly a hitting group) played two "games" against San Jac and a team out of Louisiana. In the game against Louisiana, he was 91-92. Needless to say, there was alot of chatter in the stands.
I would imagine....you bust that 90+ mark and things change.......quickly.
There were several scouts there on Tuesday. Gabby was 91-93 consistently. Topped out at 94. Lamar might want to make other arrangements. ;D
what ever club drafts him this year are going to have to throw big money at him if they want him... or they will lose him for 3 years... and hope to get him in the 2014 draft -

Retired from the education system and recieving a pension. 2. Working for the same education system and recieving a paycheck. They and many others are double dipping the system. It should not be possible. If they want to come out of retirement and coach or teach because they are good at it, they enjoy it and are needed that would be fantastic. It is nothing personal with these two fine coaches it just does not make good financial sense.
Double dipping? They paid into the retirement system over a lifetime of work and then took advantage of being a conscientious, hard working employee by reaping the benefits of their work and you call this double dipping. They do not receive state benefits like all other state employees nor do they receive state retirement like all other state employees. A state highway department worker with out a college degree receives better insurance and better state retirement than teachers. As America and Texas together fall further behind the world in the quality of educating our children let's continue to blame teachers and cut money needed to educate the young. There's a great rally cry "LET'S BE MORE MEDIOCRE".
that its ture but the state matches what they put in... so dont say the state does nothing... and they did not pay social security...think about all the money you put into SS and put it to retirement... that is what teachers do... as for the youth falling behind... THAT IS WHY THEY ARE HIRING YOUNGER TEACHERS... they are trained... -
Let's b#$%^ a little more about teachers and coaches. The state says that the minimum salary for a teacher is 43,000. How many other jobs do you know of where someone with 30 years in the same job make this little. I have friends with high school educations that made way more than this the first year out of high school. And dont tell me that schools can pay more than that. I know they can and most, not all, do. Even if a school pays 12000 above, that's still just 55,000.
salaries are based on year of experience 0 years-27,320 to 20+years - 44,270. that is state min.... other districts feel this not enough and pay more... in the Houston area 44,270 is what a 3 year experienced teacher would make.... why does other districts pay more??.... they have more revenue and cost of living is higher… as for your coach only making 55,000 with his coaching stipends and you say that is not a lot of money…do me a favor and look up the average combined income of your area (Newton)… I know the average COMBINED income in Kirbyville is like $50,000… NOW DOES YOUR COACH MAKE A LOT OF MONEY IN HIS AREA… 55,000 AND RETIREMENT ON A SINGLE INCOME??? THAT IS MORE THAN TWICE THE AVERAGE if the district is struggling then they have two choices: make cuts or create more revenue other than what the state gives you... which means more people have to move to Newton and pay tax..... the state makes the district pay if a district hires a retired teacher, this is to inspire districts to hire younger teachers, teachers with more technology training to inspire the younger generation to learn rather than “just open you book to page 320 and read, test on Friday†If you really are concerned about the coach losing his job and not receiving 2 pay checks then I have a solution for you…. The state says to be payed for coaching an extracurricular activity you do not have to be a teacher… you just have to be hired as a full time by the district….. IF THEY WANT TO COACH have them take a position as maintenance or a full time sub… pay would be less but they get to do what they love to do…. COACH. -
If kids are serious about playing baseball and have ambitions of making it to the next level, they should learn to study now! There are plenty of good ball players who will not get an opportunity due to grades. I wish them the best, and hope a leason is learned to help them in the future.
no pass/no play is not just for baseball... its all extra activities.... and they are learning a lesson by sitting out for 3 weeks... most return from that motivation.... as for college.. most who struggle with grades do not make it to college...that is why it is a High school rule... to motivate kids who may not attend college to still learn... and if they do make it to college and play a sport they have to study and get tutorials on their OWN time... not during practice...
-
for some kids Athletics is the only way to keep them off the street.... if they did not practice do you really think they are going home to study...my guess is no!!! plain and simple to me.... you take away the carrot and the horse will run away... Its all for the kids....

Why are kids that do not make their grades allowed to practice? Shouldn't they be attending study hall? I was informed this afternoon that one local school lost 3 of their starting pitchers to failing grades, and instead of going home to study, they are being required to attend practice which some evening may not end until 9 or 10. Coaches, I beleive "No PASS NO PLAY" was intended to motivate the student athelete - to penalize those who fail, and reward those who pass. Just my opinion. What's yours?
No Pass-No Play aside, this school is violating rules if they are practicing to 9-10. You can only practice 8 hours a week. That's about 1:30 to 1:45 a day right now.
you are right on the ruling.. only 8 hrs a week does not count for tryout and games are not included. so right now it could be 1hr 40 min a day but when games roll around it could last longer....... as for the 9-10pm when they get home.. it could be that the coach is starting practice late... some schools do have mandatory tutorials... and have multiple teams... if a school gets out at 330 and has tutorials till 430. fre/so practice at 500-700 JV/V 700-900... i could see them getting home late.. the question is what is your kid doing for the 2 hr off… the rule just states 8HR a week not when they start.. As for the no pass/no play rule….. some kids may not understand one subject for a 6 weeks and fail.. They are punished for not playing in any games till 3 weeks has expired … that is enough punishment It is not made to hurt the kid.. if a kid cannot practice… think about all the things he has missed.. has to learn and relearn what they have be taught.. in most sports a kid could not recover from this… like they found out when no pass/no play was 6 weeks long…… as long as the kid is receiving tutorials and the extra education they need… what is the problem???
