  1. None taken. Jacksonville's is nice' date=' as is Stephenville's.

Except for when Vidor used the Tampa Bay-styled pirate flag on their helmets a couple of years ago, I typically don't care much for HS helmets that aren't much more than an NFL or NCAA duplicate.[/quote']

I was going to mention Vidor's from a couple of years ago too. I liked the white helmets with the pirate flag. I thought they looked pretty cool. Are they not using those anymore? We haven't played Vidor for a few years so I don't know if they still have those or not.

As for home uniforms, I have to admit I DO like the Nederland solid black w/ gold stripes. I also like the solid purple of PNG w/ the broken indian stripe.

  2. French tied for the state title in 1984. The 1985 season was their last season. They missed the playoffs that year by losing to WO-S 10-7 in the driving rain. The teams that made the playoffs that year were WO-S (1st) and BCP (2nd). It was the first time BCP had made the playoffs since the merger of Beaumont High and Charlton Pollard.

  3. I think most people realize the QB position will be different for WO-S this year, even though Franks is a great athlete with "Beasley like" speed. I'm just not sure about his passing. It will be a different team no doubt. Most think we have the potential to do what we did last year because we have an experienced line coming back on both side of the ball along with more skill people. Last year we had Beasley, White and Thomas... this year we have Thomas, Franks, Garrett and Dennis.

I think the line will be the difference and if we are fortunate enough to go all the way, it will be because of our boys up front, on both sides.

  4. Well... neither of those plays helped the cause. We really blew that game. I remember Rodney's catch like it was yesterday. The DB tried to make a play on the ball on their sideline, but he missed it and Rodney caught it and was all alone. I was so sure he was going to score that I had turned and raised my helmet to the crowd. I couldn't believe it when I turned around and he had been caught. He was literally all by himself. I still don't know where the kid who caght him came from. I was sent in at guard on the goal line. First play we jump offsides, then do it again on the next play (neither were me  ). After that, it was all over.

Another missed opportunity in that game was when Harold Green (the fastest 200 meter hurdle guy in the state), broke down the sideline and pulls a hammy and gets caught from behind. We didn't score that time either.

  5. :D I see the point.

Coop, take Sports Extra for example. The station doesn't make money off of the players and coaches that are on your program. BUT, they make a ton of money off of local and non local advertisers who pay a ton of money to have their ads played during the broadcast because they know there will be a large local viewing. Of course, this is how the business makes it's money, but they are using local sports because it makes them money. The pay back for the individuals on the program is publicity.

I tend to agree with GS, they do not have a monetary responsibility to give back to the schools, but I feel they DO have a moral responsibility to do what they can in certain situations.

  6. kosmosis... by making statements that contain "they are" or "would be" it insinuates that you have arrived at your decision by analyzing some kind of info. I guess the idea that we would be 7-3 just popped into your head and there was no information or games witnessed that would draw you to that conclusion, innate knowledge I think they call it... sorry man.

We (as in WO-S fans) are sorry we ruffled your tail feathers. We will be sure as to not respond in any manner other than a positive one about any of your posts in the future. Since you are so objective about how good your team is, I (we) thought you would have the same objectivity towards a rebuttle to one of your posts.

  7. 1983... WO-S vs PNG

We had just taken the lead at the end of the third quarter. PNG gets the ball and has one of those long consuming drives down the field (I'm playing DE for WO-S). Anyway, they get down to our 5 w/ about 4 minutes left in the game. They have a 4th and 3 situation. Coach T sends our defensive play in and tells me specifically to watch for the reverse; I can still hear him... "stay at home". Well, they run the toss to the weak side (they had been doing it the whole drive and we couldn't stop it). So... thinking I recognized it prior to the play because I was watching the tailbacks eyes, I get a good jump off the snap and think I have the play stopped. I'll be damned if the tailback doesn't pitch the ball to the receiver coming around the back side and me thinking SON OF A B***H, MOTHER F****R, IT 'S A DA*N REVERSE...

I never ran so hard in my life trying to catch that kid, but it was all for not... he scored and we lost.

  8. Well... I can take critiqueing. If you experts say WO-S was a 7-3 team please back that analogy with a reason for your conclusion. If we would have had 3 losses in the regular season, who would they have been to? Keep in mind, you can't figure the games as if we would not have had someone playing QB. If we didn't have Beasley, we would have had someone else back there. Either Earl Thomas or Andre Bevil, who was a much more accomplished passer than Beasley. So let us know which games we would not have won and why. Also, in those games, let us know what Beasley did for us that another person, playing that position, wouldn't.

While your at it, go ahead and give us what BC's record would have been without Dishon. We all know what happened the one game they played without him. Please give us some insight on what would have happened in the rest.

Not trying to ruffle feathers, but I think Dishon meant waaaaay more to BC's team than Beasley did to WO-S. I truly believe that BC was a 5-5 team without Dishon.

  9. buy or sell: anyone going winless in the 3a district

Buy: HJ or HF, one will not win a district game I'm afraid. My personal feeling are that it will be HJ. Never have had a defense and just lost all the offense they had.

B or S: Kenneth Beasley will find the starting line up on defense this year and be voted the Big Twelve newcomer of the year.

  10. I remember the "guard around" play that is now illegal. WOS used that play in the playoffs in 86 against Jasper on their way to the state championship game. I think Jasper was the only team to beat them that year in the regular season' date=' but I'm not sure about that. That was a tough loss that year.[/quote']

We also lost to Aldine MacArthur 14-0 in the first game of the season...

    FAVORITES

Alvin: Of all the favorites, Alvin could be the

dark horse. Though picked 6th in district, Alvin

beat district-favorite Pearland in an SQT finals.

Austin Westlake: If QB Nick Foles gets hot,

Westlake could be the team to beat.

Baytown Lee: Two-time champs have another

solid QB in Jeremy Moses, the QB for the 7-on-

    7 state champs.

Brenham: Might boast most skill of any qualifier:

Qb Jarrett Lee (LSU pledge), WR/DB

Brandon Collins (UT pledge), CB Shawn

    Sullivan (Nebraska pledge).

Copperas Cove: Tons of talent returns for the

Dawgs, including Tech pledge in WR Rashad

    Hawk.

Cypress Falls: Falls has one of top receiving

duos in state, not just at 7-on-7, as well as LB

Derek Stephens (A&M pledge) leading the

    defense.

Hebron: Brian AuBuchon, one of the catalysts

for the state title run, returns as a seasoned veteran.

Houston Stratford: Not much has been said

about Andrew Luck, but the Stratford QB, at 6-4,

could emerge from this weekend as one to

watch after passing for 1,500 yards in ‘05.

Katy: Though the Tigers needed until July to

qualify, they have plenty of talent to make a run

    at the finals.

Lufkin: Think the Pack will want to prove

they’re worthy of their No. 1 ranking in the 2006

    DCTF?

Southlake Carroll: Talent never a question

mark for Dragons; having Riley Dodge at QB is

like having a coach on the field.

Tyler John Tyler: Beating crosstown nemesis

Tyler Lee propelled JT, not former champion

    Lee, into the favorites category.

    Weatherford: Roos are loaded with receivers;

watch out if QB Briley Worthington can get them

    the ball consistently.

Wolfforth Frenship: Only a junior, QB Seth

Doege, a Crane transfer, could really bust out

onto the scene with a strong state showing.

Katy Cinco Ranch: Another former champion

with a strong shot at doubling its number of

    titles.

    CONTENDERS

Abilene: QB Spens Lackey is showing Eagles

can move on past Potts era.

    Alamo Heights: An easy-to-remember name,

QB Giovanne Vizza could lead AH far.

Arlington Lamar: Mainstay at state tournament.

Bandera: Look for QB Brandon Hicks to shine.

Bellaire: QB Max Flinn is solid, but surrounding

parts will need to play at his level.

Beaumont Ozen: Best defensive backfield in

    competition will be tested.

Brownwood: In this slot more from experience

with passing offenses and less with personnel.

Cypress Fairbaks: Cy-Fair lost 17 starters from

    last year’s surprise 10-3 run.

Edcouch-Elsa: Team qualified in El Paso, so

trip to College Station won’t be a factor.

Grapevine: ‘98 runner-ups know a thing or two

    about the passing game.

Haltom: Team is making quick transition to a

    new coach and system.

Houston Lamar: QB Woods returns to lead

team that went unbeaten in ‘05 regular season.

Katy Taylor: First team to qualify in 2006.

North Mesquite: Might have to rely on defense.

Odessa Permian: Can Mojo recapture magic?

    Pearland: The Sam Proctor-Foswhitt Whitaker

    connection should strike often.

Plano East: Looks for East to use Chris Slater

    in multiple positions.

Saginaw Boswell: QB Taylor Weidman will get

his chance to earn equal footing with some of

    the state’s better known passers.

San Benito: New arriver on state scene could

    provide fits early on.

Stephenville: Qualifying is good way to begin

    life after Jevan Snead.

Tyler Lee: Took the Rebs a while just to qualify.

Victoria Memorial: Vipers love to throw the ball

    around.

West Mesquite: Held opponents to a sub-20

point average during its 5-0 tournament run.

West Orange-Stark: This 3A squad usually has

    the talent of larger schools.

Wharton: Smallest school (under 700 enrollment)

    to make state.

Wylie: Georgia transfer Patrick Witt could be

    the tourney’s X-factor.

    UNDERDOGS

Alief Elsik: Late qualifier might be happy just to

    be here.

Arlington Bowie: Newly hired Coach Perry

already bringing returns to the Vols.

Austin Lake Travis: Post-Todd Reese era off to

good start just by qualifying for state.

Buda Hays: Hays always has talent, but graduation

stripped Rebels of much of it.

Burnet: Rebounding from last year’s 4-6 mark

    starts in the summer.

Bryan: The Vikings waited a long time to qualify

    - and got drubbed by West Mesquite in the final.

Canton: Longshots to even make it, it’s all

    gravy at this point.

Colleyville Heritage: QB Casey Russell has talent,

but will take some time to reach level of his

    predecessor.

Cypress Creek: QB Bryan Smith will use state

to transition from his ‘05 DB position.

Cypress Springs: Making it to this point should

help Springs recover from 1-9 mark last year.

El Paso Hanks: Omar Hanks, an undervalued

QB, will strut his stuff on the state scene.

Georgetown: Team still learning new system.

Graham: 3A squad is led by WR Chance

    McCoy, younger brother of Colt.

Langham Creek: Langham Creek still trying to

break in successor to Ross Jenkins.

McAllen Rowe: Rowe just needs to make most

of first qualification in two years.

Midlothian: Surprise qualifier looking to continue

    string of upsets.

Plano: Had a nice resurgence last season, but

that was in a run-based offense.

Port Arthur Memorial: Once team picks up

Coach Thompson’s approach, Titans will be a

    major state player.

Rockwall: Only thing up in the air for Rockwall

    is the QB position.

Round Rock: Dragons have two receiving

threats in Alex Russian and James Kirkendoll.

Sherman: Run-oriented QB Taylor Dunlap will

need adapt to 7-on-7 passing style.

Spring Westfield: Not quite as much talent

    returns compared to 2005.

San Antonio Clark: QB Justin Vaneck returns

    from 1,500-yard campaign.
