The title of this thread is "Importance of scrimmage scores". There is no importance whatsoever in the scores of any scrimmage as it means nothing. What is important is how much you have improved since the first practice (or last scrimmage)' date=' finding out who can play where and find what mistakes need to be corrected.
Does coach want to "win" a scrimmage? Yes because we all want to win at whatever we do. I could be playing hopskotch or tiddlywinks and I would want to win that also. Is it important to outscore an opponent in a scrimmage? Not in the least other than ego or getting on bulletin boards.
I am sure that all coaches want their team to perform well and make progress in working as a unit. I would bet that any coach would rather his team play a great scrimmage and lose some theoretical score rather than "win" a score like 2-1 or 3-1 and play lousy. In the regular season it is different. I would rather see my team walk off the field as victors even if they were outplayed.
In Nederland's recent 10 year run at the playoffs I have missed exactly one game including the non-district and district games. I can tell you most of the scores for those 10 years (including back to 1966), can recount most of the big plays and can tell you how we played, win or lose.
I think that I have been to all of Nederland's scrimmages in the last 9 years (but I wouldn't swear to it). I can't tell you any of the scores, even the ones from last year. I sure don't remember any of the plays. I have a lot of friends that love to point out how PN-G, TJ, WO-S or Lincoln beat Nederland in a particular game (like in '94 when PN-G won 54-0). I have never had someone approach me and bring up a scrimmage score. I wonder why?
Wouldn't that make a great bragging point... "we went 0-10 that year but hey, we beat Nederland in a scrimmage 3-1!".[/quote']
Good lord, you are more hurt by Nederland losing that scrimmage than I thought. Had Nederland beat Silsbee you would be as quiet as a church mouse. No one, except for Ned fans, cares that you got beat so relax the, "It don't mean nothin" crusade.
OK so you are saying that it's actually stats that REALLY matter in the scrimmages... OK. Ask coach Neumann if he would like to see his team run up and down the field, but have problems punching it in.
I don't mean to get into a pissing contest with you, I don't think the scrimmages are an end all be all of your season either. I do, however, think you are going overboard trying to lessen them because your team just happened to lose one. Take care.

i agree as far as scrimmage scores not having much of an impact on the season. but what everyone is saying about caring too much about scrimmages that is the difference between decent teams and great teams. Everytime wos steps on the field they are expected to perform and perform well. obviously the other night we saw some things that looked good and some did not look so good. but i seriously doubt the coaches say its just a scrimmage dont worry about it. if we get beat badly we'll be fine. and i can assure everyone' date=' wos plays only one way and that is to win. because when the regular season starts its important to have that killer instinct.[/quote']
Very true. The fans may not be worried about how their teams perform, but I assure you, the coaches do...

Jerry, this is the first time I read this thread. I'm sooooo glad your boy is OK. God is good! Now, sit back, breathe a BIG sigh of relief and go play some golf and enjoy the football season. Hope to see you soon!

We know the game doesn't count toward your record. That really goes without saying. If you think that a coach doesn't care if his team performs poorly OR doesn't want to win the scrimmage, you are sorely mistaken.
-
Usually the folks whose teams either tied or got beat say they don't mean anything and those whose teams performed well think they do. Reality is somewhere in the middle.
-
I agree bh146...............WOS pretty much won most of the past years due to their Defense mostly. An offense is important' date=' but if you cant keep the other team from scoring, then look what happens.
Ill give you an example... What Wemberly did to us last year!!!!!!!
We could score, but we couldnt stop them from scoring either.[/quote']
kicker, you know who the kicker he is talking about is...
-
I expect OF to be twice the team than that BH team I saw last night was.
-
Where is it? I've been looking for a button or something, but can't find it anywhere.
-
Add another for BH.
I think we will do just fine against WOS.
It being the first game/scrimage I do not expect to see a lot of explosives from either team.
I know both teams will be pumped' date=' and ready to play I just think us, the fans are putting a lot more into this than the coaches.
Sure both would love to win, but I think they are really using it for a good judge for our teams early in the year with good competition.
WOS has been doing this for years and now BH has got to step up and play tough teams early to get ready.
I feel fortunate to be scrimaging WOS and take my hat off to our staff for scheduling such tough teams early this year.
Obviously the WOS staff feels we would give their team a good test early in the season or they would be playing someone else.
I have been waiting for this for a long time the sad part is it don't count.
Hey RB don't be making any excuses for the Hill.
You, Jody, Shellman and I have been looking forward to this for a long time and if the Hill does'nt make a good showing we will just have to eat a little crow.
I don't want the almighty WOS posters to have reason for excuses.
I just want them to come back here like big boys and girls and eat your crow, because I will.
Which is not a problem because we, I have had our share of crow over the years.
Along with lots of other posters from setxsports forums and the downlow.
But we, I also have served our share so here is an early serving of crow for the almighty WOS lovers.
So WOS posters how do you, like you crow, fried, baked, boiled, stewed, or in a gumbo?
Mmmmmm taste like chicken.

Yeah, I would disappear after that one too.

Someone in chat said that PNG lost 28-7. Are you sure on that score?
-
In a controlled scrim, if you are closer to the opposing teams 30 and have a turnover you just turn around and start again from that 30. It is not an indication of a score.
-
It looks great, even with the subliminal Newton "plug" on top...

WOS does not have the wrecking crew of old. They do have an agressive D no doubt. Coach T will never let a squad get on the field that did not hustle. They do not have all the size of the late 80's and 90's where they got their name. Dominating D maybe not anymore IMO.
And no one should ever put Ned in this post. We have a bend but don't break thing with Delbert Spell. He will never be the dominate D of some of the powerhouse programs like Brenham' date=' Lamarque, Kilgore, etc. If Ned had "D" the offense has more than enough talent and points to win it all. Delbert is the problem IMO just as Barrow is the reason for the offensive success each year.
OK first of all it's the "Chain Gang" not the "Wrecking Crew", you just showed us how much you know about our team.
I realize that's your opinion and I respect that. It's true, we have not been the same defensive power we were from the mid 80's through the 2000 season, a time which the only team in 4A that could even think of matching our defensive prowess was LaMarque. From 2001 to 2005 we were not the same team. We think it will be back though, there are still many athletes in WO-S and size was never a key ingredient to our success. This may be the year and it may not, but the "Chain Gang" will rise again. 8)

If Dayton runs the ball against WOS' date=' Dayton will win by at least 2 TD's. If they try to throw the ball and not control the clock, it will be closer. Dayton wins either way. Dayton 21 WOS 7[/quote']
I'm not going to make any predictions on this one, but if Dayton wins by 2 TD's, I'll be stunned.
-
almighty WOS lover.
I knew God was a WO-S fan... thanks for confirming that. 8)

I always played defense more than offense, but I always had an offensive mind. Meaning, when I wasn't in the game on offense, I would always study the defense and try to figure out which plays would work.
-
I think it's probably accurate. From what I hear the Tatum kid is really as good as the hype. Tatum has generated some big time athletes in the past. You've gotta love the name too. Classic East Texas.
I think he ranks #1 for RB names with Noel Devine a close second. 8)

I realize every DB is going to get beat... my reference was to a particular tournament (state 7 on 7). He did not get beat in 7 games. I was not making any wild statement like he never would.
We could probably debate about who is the better of the two all day. I really don't want to get into that because, most of the time, you have to point out one players weakness to hype the other and I don't want to do that. Both boys are from this area and both are GREAT players. Time will tell which one will excel at the next level.
FYI- I saw every game of the qualifying 7 on 7 and had a real good vantage point. The Hispanic team was Edcouch Elsa and the kid that got beat was D. Rhodes. They were talking smack to Earl from the get go and every time they made a play on us they talked smack to Earl. They were extremely cocky for a team that got the "L". The PNG guy did get Earl. Earl mistimed his jump and the PNG kid went up over him. It was just a good play on the PNG kids part. As you said, they all get beat sometime.
-
ahhh... but those teams won with defense, not offense.
-
I'm not basing my opinion by what some publication, who probably never saw the kid play, says they are ranked. I base it off of what I've seen with my own 2 eyes. Earl plays for a 3A school and goes both ways. He did not play defense full time last year as did Wells. He was not able to pad his stats. I did see both play this summer and Earl by far out shined Wells. Wells got roasted by a 3A team. Earl played nothing but 5A and NEVER got beat. Earl plays like he's pissed all the time. You can't teach that. Wells has all the tools and is an OUTSTANDING DB. I just do not feel he has the same tenacious mentality that Earl does. This is MY OPINION ONLY.

It'll be interesting to see who the "odd man out" will be in this district.
-
God bless this child. Under God, we are all one community.

Tatum is in East Texas and they dropped to 2A.

Because that is the only way to measure whether or not the players you have in place were successful. You have to have a measure, scores and stats are that measure. THAT is why they DO mean something even if they don't count. There is a BIG difference between not counting and not meaning anything.
Anyway, I think this subject is played out. Good luck to everyone this weekend. Whether they mean anything or not... sorry, couldn't resist.
