You have said that the playoffs equal success, so yeah they were very successful in making the playoffs.

You mean “losing season success”? Yes they were very successful at having losing seasons in basketball. In the good years they were mediocre. Baseball is down. Track is the same. Football is better.

The only thing that is worse than normal is baseball. I think the baseball coach is actually from the previous regime.

I don't understand why you keep comparing Jasper to those others.  The question was about for 10 years all teams had success now they don't. Compare Jasper to Jasper.

Not sure what you mean by "all teams had success"? Basketball is doing about like they always have, which is mediocre. Decent year then bad year like normal. (5 of the previous 8 seasons before Crumedy had losing records). Track is similar to normal. Baseball is down.

One thing for certain is that they went farther than any previous team in football for the last 20 years.

But according to some (one), that's not important in the grand scheme of the overall athletic program.

    Just ask @89Falcon

Yep, Spring sports are fun and it is always nice to win but make no mistake, they pale in comparison to winning in football.

Would be interesting to see if Spring sports have the same forum traffic as football on SETX or other platforms?

If Crumedy eventually has bigger aspirations than being in Jasper, every aspect of the program will be looked at when someone interviews him for any job. He knows that. The mindset needs to be that any time someone wears a Jasper uniform, that they're doing everything they possibly can to win. It matters.

No, if the football team makes deep runs and the track team stays competitive, he will have plenty of options. Have you ever watched a Gilmer basketball or baseball game?

Coaches can't be in the dugout to coach, but the coaches are setting the schedule. The coaches are organizing it. The coaches are setting the lineup in advance. The coaches are determining who is pitching and how many pitches they are throwing.

Fall baseball is like 7 on 7. The coaches may not be calling he pitches or the plays, but they are in "control" of the situation and they are present and "observing."

    Which schools?

We're in a tough spot because I believe the most successful days in football are still in front of Coach Crumedy. Short-term, difficult decisions are probably coming with some of these other coaches. Being the laughingstock of East Texas in every other sport is ridiculous,

It has been working in Newton.

The thread question is about their overall athletic program. Not just football.

If? You talk as they will. Things are so much better.

Understood, as football goes, so goes the program. If football loses or becomes stagnant and mediocre, Jasper will find another AD. If football continues to go deep in the playoffs the AD will be celebrated (just like everywhere else).

Your first comment on this thread was saying how Jasper athletic program is so much better because the football team had a good season and despite the fact that the other 5 sports went 2-58 in district play. That's narrow minded.

Got it, you definitely lost track of the transcript. "YOU" specifically referenced my comment about the question about "how football was better" and then you convoluted it with an opinion you made from one of my earlier comments.

For the record, if Jasper continues to go 4 rounds deep in football there will not be enough losses available in Spring sports to matter and if Jasper can continue to make deep runs the coach will probably receive a raise to entice him to stay. It might be "narrow minded" but is "reality".

So if Jasper fails to make it to Regional finals next year, then things are not better?

Saying things are better because of one football season (when the discussion is about the overall athletic program) is pretty narrow minded.

But, coming from you, I completely understand.

Yes, that is how sports and playoffs work. Teams that go farther are considered better than teams that dont.

As you have lost contact with the transcript and revealed your narrow scope of concentration, my comment was in direct response to the question about "how the football team was better".

A lot of SETX schools play fall ball as well.  Hell, I remember a couple years ago, the starting QB for a local team showed up to the game after football practice still wearing his girdle and thigh pads.

Which SETX school participates in Fall baseball? Kids in SETX play Fall ball on their own but the only "Fall ball" the schools are playing is football.

Great playoff run, no doubt.  They did make the 3rd round(1 less) 4 of the previous 10 years, only one first round loss. 6 district championships and 4 second place.  The only 4 years Carthage was in the same district. So no, I'm not sure it does make sense.

Let me help you understand: "Making it 4 rounds deep is better than not making it 4 rounds deep".

In your opinion. Many others would disagree.

The subject was the overall athletic program. Not just football.

Yep, things are going great as long as football is good and track holding serve. Anyone know how Newton is doing in the other sports?

  13. 2 hours ago, AggiesAreWe said:

About the same as they have always been the last several years. They are good. I wouldn't say they are better or worse though.

Regional Final in football overrides all the other stuff. Track holding serve is a reflection of the football program. Good times in Jasper. Can’t wait to see how they do this coming year.

In these 5 sports (volleyball, boys/girls basketball, baseball and softball) Jasper went a combined 2-58 in district play. Winless in volleyball, boys/girls basketball. One win each in baseball and softball.

I would say that things overall are not better than the last several years. Particularly in basketball and baseball.

    What about track?

I could talk forever about this..  I have quite a bit of first hand knowledge about the way kids feel about this subject.  I don't agree with the kids when they want to quit one sport to "focusing on one sport" but understand reasoning why they quit especially in JR. and SR. year...

Keep these two things in mind. It you agree with these two statements then you can understand:

    • Multi-sport kids should be pushed to play what they want to play...
    • Kids should be never be mandated to play any sport..

All repercussions fall back on the AD... It's the AD's program.  If they mandated it, the AD has to take responsibility.. even in accidents...

    • Good AD's know how to navigate multi-sport kids. They inspire the want to play.
    • Bad AD's do not and cause tension inside their entire athletic programs.. this is when you see kids that contribute in one sport quit usually after 10th grade year..
    • Really bad AD's have caused so much damage that the kid quits being a multi-sport athlete (quits football) after his 8th grade year. He never even gets to coach them in high school.

Again I could get very specific but not gonna.

    Good ADs "win in football".

During the previous regime, only 12 teams missed the playoffs in 10 years.  Last year only 3 of 8 made the playoffs and this year only Football made it. 4 times all 8 made playoffs. 5 if you include COVID year. I worked with Coach Crumedy for several weeks in the spring of 22 when he first got the job.  I am sure he will get this turned around, unless they are losing kids.

The football team made it to the Regional Final. Things are better in Jasper than they have been in many years.

I get all of the arguments, but part of being the AD is doing what’s best for all of your programs, not just football.  And it’s not best for the baseball program for one of its best players to be hurt doing football drills right before the baseball playoffs.  There are things he can be doing to get ready for football that don’t risk injury.   And I also stand by the opinion that the football coach would not be happy at all if the kid got hurt in the middle of football season at a fall practice for varsity baseball. In fact I’d bet a whole lot of money that that player wouldn’t be allowed to participate in that baseball practice to begin with.  I think a lot of the people that are okay with this would also be upset if the situation and sports were reversed, because they’re only really worried about football.  But that’s just my opinion.

The AD's job is to win in football. Everything else is window dressing. If the football team is winning the rest can go up in smoke.
