Is this about Tarkington? Does anyone know where they are at in the process?

The job just got posted earlier this week so the process is just in the beginning. The posting is for AD and HFC but in the posting it says that they reserve the right to hire those positions separately.

So they are very early in the process and don't know if they wanna separate it or not. The new sup just started so I imagine she will have somebody she will want to bring but she is from the Dallas area and not sure anybody will want to follow her down here.

That is about all I know.

careful what you say here.  sutherland (in tarkington) will still convince about 3 families from beaumont to move to tarkington !!!

lets not pretend all the talent thats came thru EC in the past 20 years has been home grown winnie boys.

i'm not knocking it for a second. sutherland is the greatest recruiter / coach in the history of east chambers and will continue to win until he retires

but lets stop dreaming.  tarkington will never be EC and will never be able to lure in a coach with credentials like RS.

Tarkington is definitely not a prime location for move ins. There are like 15 rent houses that surround the school and no apartments at all. Everything else is pretty much a house with a couple acres of land. Not many options for people to move in randomly.

I looked into buying some land in Tarkington and it was well out of my price range. They are very proud of their prairie land. I found cheaper elsewhere.

Look, I agree, things are bad at Tarkington.  I'm sure losing is entrenched in everything they do.  3 years is not long enough to break that straggle hold.  Maybe 7, or maybe 10 years is what is needed!  That's if a coach is willing to stay that long.  East Chambers has that winning attitude that Tarkington will eventually need.  Ol' Stan just didn't want to stay longer.  Plus -- ol' Stan was out of football for 9 years when he went to Tarkington.  I don't think he's a HC any more.

He wasn't out of football. Just wasn't a head coach. He was at Bellville for the 5 years as the assistant HC before he took the Tarkington job. But that tells you that it isn't all coaching. 90% of high school football coaches can/will tell you this saying, "Jimmie's and Joe's not X's and O's".

Getting back to Tarkington for moment, it's interesting that, according to Dave Campbell this past year, Tarkenton had the largest enrollment in the district.  So why would East Chambers always have the advantage?  It's not like Tarkington is always at an enrollment disadvantage.  Could it be the coaching?!

It is athletes. Stan Howard was the head coach at both East Chambers and Tarkington. At EC he won, I believe 9 games in his only year there. At Tarkington, he didn't win 9 games in his 3 seasons combined.

I would hire Briles.. because Briles is still coaching.  However, I would in zero way expect for him to win more than one playoff game unless he's bringing kids with him.  I most definitely would not expect for him to win a state championship..because I'm not an idiot.  And if my job depended on the success of the next football coach at Tarkington, I'd be ready to find a new job after my hire didn't meet whoever's criteria of whatever is deemed as success.  Unless they have some realistic goals for a school that has won less than 5 playoff games (TOTAL) in it's history.

They were also horrible before a major population shift to the area.  Carthage and Aledo are in the same boat as far as a major influence of population growth, new business, and new money.  Just as schools can go from dominant to irrelevant.. so can the opposite happen.  In fact.. it absolutely happens.  Carthage and Aledo have some of the nicest facilities in the state coupled with communities willing to pour as much money as possible into the athletics program.  Is Tarkington willing to do that?

I can tell you that they are not willing to pour anything into athletics. The weight room and fieldhouse are some of the absolute worst facilities in the area. The visiting team uses the middle school locker room that is even older than the high school locker room.

A buddy of mine used to work there and they tell a story of a family of rats that fell out of the roof in the locker room one day. Unless they are willing to actually make those improvements to those then nothing will change. They have been saying they were going to build a new fieldhouse/weight room for almost 10 years now and it still hasn't happened. Having that poor of facilities makes those "on the fence" kids not want to participate. Give them something they can take pride in and that is how you will get participation up.

I was told that before Covid hit, they actually had some blueprints from a contractor of a new field house but once Covid came, those plans disappeared. You have to have something the kids can take pride in to make them want to be in athletics and want to go to the weight room. The weight room is the old bus barn and the floor is 2 different heights.

Better watch yourself around here mentioning anything good Howard did...the trolls will come out and start to cry foul!

I'd reach back out to Stan because the guy is still invested there. He'd be willing to ride the time out and do what's right by kids...but I don't know anything.

All I said is that he made the playoffs his first year there lol. I don't think the school board will want him back though since they are the ones that ran him off and most of them are still on it.

That's a rarity in T Town.  I'd tap the brakes a little for anyone to assume that's a year in and year out thing there.

It is definitely very rare. But with those kids, still only averaged 2 wins a season. They had a rare run that they made the playoffs 3 years in a row and actually won the bi-district round game under Carpenter and I also want to say that those are the only 3 playoff appearances in school history as well. Well 2 playoff appearances with Carpenter and 1 under Howard.

  10. Surprisingly, they have had kids that have gotten football scholarships to some pretty decent programs. D2 and up. Got a WR playing at Henderson State, OL playing at A&M Kingsville, DE playing at Blinn, QB signed with Army for Baseball. Those were from the graduating class of 2020 and 2021. So there is some talent. But the jump from those to the rest is pretty big.

  11. Tarkington gas stations don't sell beer. Once you leave Cleveland and cross the Tarkington Bayou you won't see beer until after the Trinity River or almost to Dayton. Never made since to me. Because they definitely need it out there.

  12. The last 4 head coaches that were there left to just become coordinators at a different school. Carpenter just last year became a HC again at Klein Oak.

I can name 2 coaches that live in Tarkington and have kids that go there that would be a good fit for the job, but I don't think the school board will go for it.

Plus if you separate the AD/HC then you won't get many people who will want to deal with it either. I don't expect very many applicants for this job if it does get split.

Hopefully they learned their lesson by hiring a south Texas guy and him only lasting one semester. Need a guy that is from SETX or Houston area that know what to expect with the job and willing to take on the challenge and ride it out for the long haul, community willing.

Baseball coaches son is a senior this year so I am sure he is not far from retirement.

  13. I think if they want a quality guy then they can't split the AD/HC there. Just to be honest, not many people will want the job if it is just HFC. As stated, it takes a special guy who will develop the program but they won't stick around long enough to let it happen or they get ran out of town before it happens because the community wants to win immediately.

Unfortunately, they have not done much winning ever outside of under Carpenter.

The community needs to stop running out coaches and let them build quality young men and woman. A successful program is not always determined by the football record. Tarkington has been good at baseball, basketball, and track and field (mainly field lol) very recently.

Get a guy that wants to be there and is passionate about it. Don't run them off because of the football record, some schools just aren't football schools.

NC shouldn't have any problem running away with this one. As much as they give Reescano the ball you're probably going to see him get over 200 yards on the ground. NC needs to make a run this year because they next few might start to get brutal.

@Lightning/Eagle I was talking to one of Porter's coaches last week and he told me NCISD is going to open West Fork High in Kingwood with freshman only next year. Forgot to ask if the sophomores in the attendance zone would be required to go there too? I expect both Porter and NC to have 6A enrollments come October realignments numbers. I see the school is on the Porter side of 59 but it's so far south that it's directly west of KP's attendance zone. Is West Fork going to pull from just Porter or both NCISD high schools, and if it's going to pull from NC High where are the kids going to come from?

West Fork HS will take 1 Middle school feeder away from Porter HS. However, Porter is going to replace that middle school with one of New Caney's middle school feeders.

New Caney will have 1 feeder (Keefer Crossing, 2nd biggest MS)

Porter will have 2 feeders (White Oak and Pine Valley, The 2 smallest MS)

West Fork will have 1 feeder (Woodridge Forest, Biggest MS)

They rezoned the middle schools to make Keefer Crossing MS and Woodridge Forest MS similar in enrollment numbers. The other 2 MS together are similar in enrollment numbers but their enrollments are much smaller than the other 2 MS that are single feeders. All of the Freshman classes should be similar enrollment numbers for next year (in theory).
