1. Jasper's teams over recent years have not been disciplined. We'll see if anything has changed. It sounds like HJ's team is pretty disciplined (teams that run these type offenses to make up what they lack in pure talent usually are). If so, I wouldn't be surprised at all with an HJ win.

2. Here is the list of games for our pickems for week 1:

Beaumont Central @ Beaumont West Brook
Baytown Lee @ Baytown Sterling
Dayton @ Channelview
Goose Creek Memorial @ Tomball Memorial
Barbers Hill @ Silsbee
Kingwood Park @ Magnolia
Clear Lake @ Port Neches-Groves
Nederland @ Crosby
Cleveland @ Shepherd
Hardin-Jefferson @ Jasper
Kirbyville @ Bridge City
Splendora @ Tarkington
West Orange-Stark @ Little Cypress-Mauriceville
Coldspring-Oakhurst @ Huntsville
Liberty @ Anahuac
Orangefield @ Buna
Beaumont Legacy @ Hardin
Deweyville @ East Chambers
Alto @ Crockett
San Augustine @ Garrison
Newton @ Tatum
Colmesneil @ Lovelady
Centerville @ Corrigan-Camden
West Sabine @ Burkeville
Vidor @ Pensacola Escambia

3. I think I have to vote for the 80s as well if we are talking about Southeast Texas as a whole. There were SO many teams at every level ranked high in the state and going deep into the playoffs when we weren't sending half the district like we do now. We had several players have pretty good NFL careers. In general, high school football games seemed more like events more so then than now.

4. Nederland or Crosby
West Brook or Ozen
Central or Port Arthur Memorial
Silsbee or Port Neches Groves
Coldspring or C.E. King
West Orange-Stark or LCM
Buna or Center
Newton or Bridge City
Kountze or Sheppard
East Chambers or Orangefield
Anahuac or Hardin Jefferson
New Waverly or Woodville
Hull Daisetta or Hardin
Evadale or Warren
Burkeville or West Hardin

We just can't win the big one. We were knocked out of the regional finals in the 80's and 90's by Willowridge (remember Thurman Thomas?), WO-S (remember Kevin Smith?, those were some dynamite games and teams), A&M Consolidated, LaMarque and Texas City (we were totally overmatched in the last two). We were knocked out of the semifinals in 2002 (this was our best chance of winning after dropping to 3A with 2 D-1 players on the team - Joseph "Red" Bryant and Jorrie Adams) and 2003 by Burnet. Then, lost in the state game in 2004 to Gilmer by 2 points in a game that most believe we were cheated on the 2-point conversion. We haven't sniffed a regional game since. Man, recounting all those losses is painful.

Maybe we'll get some coaching consistency with Coach Barbay and he'll lead us to the promised land.

People don't remember it took his dad 20+ years as head coach at Newton to win his first state championship. Then he went back twice more winning one of those. He was an assistant when Newton won their first championship. Hang on to Darrell. It takes a lot to win a title. Good kids, good coaching, and a certain amount of luck during the run.

I do think we have a good one - we need to be patient and try to keep him. There are lots of teams that are pretty good once you get to the 3rd round. So, I do believe luck definitely comes into play unless you happen to have one of those really special teams that is loaded with talent on all sides of the ball. And, even with great talent, you must have good coaching that knows how to utilize it. Even though we lost our one time in the big game, the journey getting there was still special.

The most accomplished football program in SETX without winning a state title is Jasper, hands down.

Exactly.

Coldspring/Jasper Scrimmage

Jasper  4 TD's
Coldspring  0 TD's
Wonder if CS was holding back a little. Not taking anything away from Jasper. They should have a great season. Best of luck Jasper.
I don't think the scrimmage score means all that much without knowing which players played for how long and what plays were run. Jasper has been gangbusters in scrimmages only to win 2 games when the real season started and looked pathetic in scrimmages to go on to the state semi-final game. Coldspring is well-coached with some good athletes. I wouldn't worry too much.
8. High School coaching salaries ...should they make more?  No, there's way too much emphasis as it is on sports in grade school. Imagine what we'd be if only half the same emphasis and pressure were put on reading, writing, math and science. This is not college where if they win, it could mean millions to their schools.

How about the players? I have never said this on a message board before, but dumb question. See answer above. These are children and sports should ALWAYS be secondary to education because the chances that any of them will play professionally are way too slim.

Yes 2 teams from each district make the playoffs but there is only 16 districts, so that is 64 teams in two divisions.  Currently there is 3 teams from each district and there is 32 districts, so that is 96 teams in the playoffs.  There will actually be less teams in the playoffs.
That sounds good! I always thought it would be good to limit it to 2 teams from each district. But, maybe have some wild card spots. Now, I never thought through it enough on how those wild card spots would be determined.

Jasper NEEDS NEW STADIUM LIKE FOREVER AGO!!!! Maybe some deep runs in the playoffs will help.
The great runs we had between 2001 - 2005 meant nothing. When they had the chance and construction prices were on the decline, it was voted down. Construction prices are going back up and I don't see sentiment changing. I just hope no one gets hurt.

I foresee our local 3A (4A) districts to be something like this:

Division I

Bridge City
Silsbee
WO-S
Huffman
Splendora
Cleveland
Jasper

Division II

Hamshire-Fannett
Hardin-Jefferson
Orangefield
Liberty
Tarkington
Coldspring
Shepherd

I expect Buna to drop down a classification
I like being in a district with these teams more than where we have been last 2 realignments.
