  1. 1985 Regional Semis.....Houston Yates 19, WO-S 6........It was tied 6-6 until about midway through the 4th quarter and the Stangs were leading 3-1 in penetrations (this was before OT in high school football) at the time.

+2  Wasn't playing in it, but staying so close with the '85 yates team only to loose out was disappointing.  i think had WO-S won that one, they woul dhave taken state that year as well.

  2. Well I don't live in the WOCCISD district, and don't have kids that go there so I don't have a dog in this fight. But as I grew up in the cove and went to West Orange schools all 12 years, its troubling to see a once mighty, and proud school be brought down to such levels.  I did make it to 2 home football games this past year, and was amazed at how small our numbers have become. Sure I knew we have dropped to 3A (we were 5A when i went there) so I knew it would be different, but still was a little shocked.  Even the crowd was smaller and ALOT  quieter than they used to be.  I can remember games against TJ, PN-G, Nederland where the stadium literally schook. I don't know the answer to stop all the people from leaving, and don't know what will get ALL athletic programs back to where they should and need to be, but SOMETHING  needs to be done. I admit I personally seen a little, but have read a lot and WOS just appears to be in an all around sad, sad situation.

  3. I'll go out on a limb here and say LCM will win 3-4 games next season and will keep at least 1-2 more close and competive.  That after last year will be a major improvement.  And yes, rebuilding this program must be done in small steps.

  4. Wow, most students within the WOS school district reside within a  6-8 mile or less radius, all in the city of Orange, What about Buna, Orangefield, Vidor, LCM, Deweyville and other schools in the immediate area.  They have students that reside as far as 20 to 25 miles away from their perspective schools.  They also have single mothers and fathers that reside in these school districts as well.

What about them? We aren't talking about them. Don't forget we have an open campus. So how in the world would you know where the kids live? Do the majority of them live in the city? Yes. But again it's an open campus so they don't have to live in the city or the school district.

So TD, I'm curious, a student that does not live within WO-S district boundaries can still attend school there?  I'm a grad of WO-S an am considering moving my family back so my son can play football there but really wanted a few acres of land outside the city.

  5. The Gilmer coaching staff will have our players well prepared to play.  These guys have coached together for many years, and know what it takes to get a team ready for a big game.  Many of our coaches worked together at 4A Jacksonville High School in the 90's.  Those teams put numerous players in the NFL, some of which you can see this Sunday.  Some of our recent Gilmer graduates are now playing in the BIG XII.  You can watch them Thursday night (A&M-Texas) and Saturday night when Oklahoma takes on Okie Lite.  You'll make it home in time.  Trust me.

WO-S is a worthy adversary.  We're not saying that, but we're pretty talented as well.  Not only does Gilmer have talent, but talent that has been taught very well.  They are disciplined, play good fundamental football, and execute.  The team that protects the ball and makes the fewest mistakes usually ends up winning, and that's how I see this one going.  The fun part will be when Gilmer has the ball.  Which unit proves to be more dominate........Gilmer's Fast Break Offense or the WO-S Defense.  Best of luck!

AN ARMY OF BUCKEYES ARE WE........

You know, I think the problem most WOS fans have with you Gilmer folks on this and other boards is that you say these things as if you've cornered the market in them. I got news for you, the WOS coaching staff has been together far longer than any 90's run at another school. The core of this group have been together since the school began in 77. They wrote the book on fundamental football, discipline and execution. You guys have been successful since, what, 2003? You are just babies to state prominence, we've been running with the "big dogs" for 30 years. We've been to the title game 4 times in 30 years and own the best winning percentage in ALL of Texas Highschool football... EVER... IN ANY CLASS. So... no you don't corner the market in discipline, coaching, experience or anything else... your Buckeyes are just going to have to go out and be better than WOS because that's the only way they can win. It will not be due to an intangible.

Oh yeah, we have played Ennis so thank you for your prediction... we played them when we were still in 4A in the 2000 state finals... they won, but the score was 38-24. So much for us not being able to stay on the field with them.

    Great post Gasilla!!
