  1. Best wishes to Coach Mahaffey. My son played for Coach for three seasons at HF and he always treated my son fairly and helped him to prepare to play baseball at the next level. It's always easier to coach from the stands and I am guilty of that but I never questioned the integrity or character of Coach Mahaffey. Enjoy your retirement Coach.
  2. Good way to get the stampede started Horns. Play hard and keep it rolling.
  3. Congrats to Bubba and Hunter. Like to hear when great things happen for our local kids. Keep working hard guys. Please keep us posted.
  4. Good luck to Bubba, Stevo and Trev. Panola not only got three great ball players, they also got three great young men. Work hard guys!
  5. The voting is based on District play. In the past, the list has not been released until all of the teams have finished their play-off run.
  6. Congrats to all the players that were named. Great job!
  7. Congrats Jeremy. Enjoyed watching Jeremy play at WCJC this year. He had a solid season at the plate and in the field. He showed that he still has the speed that us old HF fans remember. Good luck and keep playing hard.
  8. I'm from HF and over the years I have watched Buna and HF play some really good ball games. HF found away to win last night and that's what you are supposed to do if you want to be considered a contender. Buna has a quallity program and they will be just fine come district time. Great to hear that Hicks is pounding the ball and that the pitching staff is doing their job of keeping their team in the game. Congrats to HF for getting things off to a fast start but don't lose focus because distict is just around the corner. 21AAA has been a quallity baseball district for some time now and adding Buna to the mix will only make the district stronger. Good luck to both teams. GO Horns!
  9. WCJC took 3 games from Laredo in Wharton this last weekend. The Pioneers outscored Laredo by a combined 31-7. WB's Aaron Morgan got 2 RBI's and scored in game 3. HF's Jeremy Pender played all 3 games and between scoring and RBI's accounted for 6 runs. HF's Kyle Markum pushed in 7 runs and he scored once in game 1. He also scored a run in Game 2. Morgan and Markum were solid behind the plate as well. Pender has been playing CF and is showing that he still has the wheels. Scott Vaughn came in late in Game 3 to play 2nd. and showed his defensive skills in a 4-6-3 double play. The 3 game sweep puts WCJC at 5-4 for conference play.
  10. Wharton took Friday's game 4-2. Markum started behind the plate and Pender in Right. Markum went 1-3 with his timely single to push a runner into scoring position during the 7th. He was lifted for pinch runner Aaron Morgan who scored when Pender beat out a bunt. WCJC scored all 4 runs in the 7th with former HF duo playing a major part. WB's Reggie Wilson went 1-3 with a walk. Both teams showed strong pitching and the start their double header today at 2. Great opening day for WCJC.
  11. Openning day for the WCJC Pioneers is this Friday 1/27/12 in Wharton against San Jac at 6:00. Saturday's double-header will be at San Jac starting at 2:00. The SETX connection has been joined by HF's Jeremy Pender. Pender will add a lot of speed the WCJC's lineup. Should be a good series.
  12. WCJC dropped a hard fought double header to LSUE this past weekend. The SE Texas connection all had solid games despite the outcome of the games. Morgan had a great day throwing out 4 and hitting a solo shot. Vaughn showed off his skills at 2nd playing some of his best defense of the season. Gonzales covered everything hit to right field and held runners to one base. Markum was again solid behind the plate and had 1 RBI. WCJC should be in good shape for the Spring. They are working hard and learning a lot about their team this Fall by playing tough opponents.
  13. Good job Price! Keep hitn' hard.
  14. WCJC just finished a tourney at Blinn this weekend. The Pioneers defeated Angelina, lost to Galveston and tied Blinn and San Jac. Silsbee's Caleb Henry and Lance Brown, both now at Angelina, had solid performances against Wharton. Wharton's SE Texas connection of Morgan, Markum, Vaughn and Gonzalas are proving to be valuable contributers in the resurgence of the Pioneer baseball program. All four had solid offensive and defensive outings this weekend.
  15. Great news. Congrats to Zach and family. We have enjoyed watching Zach play through the years and know he will do well at the next level.
  16. Yesterday Wharton played their first fall games against Alvin Community College in Alvin. The Pioneers split the double header winning the first game 10-2 and dropping the second game 6-1. WB's Arron Morgan went 2-4 with 2 RBI's and threw out 2 stealing 2nd. HF's Kyle Markum went 1-1, stole 2nd base and threw out 1 stealling 2nd. LCM's Hunter Gonzales and Scott Vaughn both had solid defensive games in the field. There's a new winning attitude at WCJC and the coaches have the team primed for a fun season.
  17. Let's get back on subject. The Horns have shown glimpses of speed and a passing game. If they can get the air attack working there is a chance for them to stay in any game they play this year. Also, if Bell gets loose, he can out run almost anybody to the end zone. Picking HF in a close one. HF-24, Buna-20 Good luck to both teams.
  18. Congrats to Brett and his folks. Respectful and hard working young man with a great family. Brett, the stress has been lifted from your shoulders, now go play for the pure love of the game. Enjoyed spending the summer with ya'll. Good luck this season. The Markums.
  19. Way to go "T". I know your family is proud. Looking forward to seeing you next season when ya'll play Whaton. Congrats from the Markums.
  20. Congats Bubba and to your family. Good things happen when work for them. Cards are getting a good one.
  21. Congrats to all of you for earning this honor. I know you have worked hard to not only improve your game but to also be a leader on your teams. Special shout out to Price, Jacob, Bubba and Kyle. Well done fellows.
  22. Our son is 18 and has been associated with Select Baseball for 8 years. I truly feel that the time, effort and expense has been worth it. In the early years playing Select was about getting better prepared for when it came time to play high school ball. During the last 4 years, playing Select has been about being the best that he can be. Our high school coach did not have a problem with our son playing Select because Coach knew our son was receiving quality instructions and playing against quality opponents. The "self-entitlement" issue can be found at any level of youth sports. There seems to be an attitude that you have arrived and now you are owed something. I have never expected a coach to have to teach our son humility. No one is above the team and you work hard to earn your way should be taught at HOME. I believe that the Select program is better at the high school level than at the lower age groups. I love Dad Coaches because I was one but there comes a time for Dad to step back and leave coaching to the ones with experience. I love my new job as a cheerleader. We have been fortunate to have quality mentors throughout this Select experience. Jed McBride, Morgan Walker, Sam Moore and Chris Fackler have taught our son that though discipline and hard work comes success. If your son has the dream of playing college baseball, not talking about the pros, just using his baseball tools to help pay for his education, then Select Baseball is worth a look. Research the coaching staff and the team organization before you have your son participate. Keep in mind that, just like anything else, Select Baseball is what you make of it. If that road is not the one you want to travel, there are great youth baseball organizations in all of our communities where your son can still play the game he loves. Our experiences may not be typical but in our case, it was all worth it. Our son is one of the fortunate ones that will be playing the game he loves at the college level. But, even if that dream did not come true, he has gotten to be teammates with some of this area's best players, played in some of the nicer venues against teams from all over this country and along the way made lifelong friendships. Good topic Coach, Mike Markum
