Steve Roccaforte on Table Talk Tuesday
TexasTerror replied to NickKBTV's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Roc need the $$$ to pay Tic and the DOBO's salary? That's three $$$ games if he can get each of them. It'd be nice if the SLC schools who have a legit chance to compete for postseason stuck to two $$$ games at most. -
I'll second that! Buzz Williams and Todd Graham can both lose every game they ever coach for the rest of their life.

Having a 'DOBO' is a good thing. The right one makes traveling on the road a very smooth operation for the traveling party (the key is always getting a hotel that is nearby several good places to eat). Typically also helps with video exchange. -
My dumb remark about 'LU at OU'
TexasTerror replied to texasstud28's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Found a recent post on AGS...knew it had come up recently and found it. AGS is really the best FCS community out there and a great deal of my knowledge about this level has been heightened by the board, meeting people from the board in person, contributing to radio shows through the board and even writing stories for the news provider of the board. -
My dumb remark about 'LU at OU'
TexasTerror replied to texasstud28's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
An FBS has played at an FCS. There was a list of it somewhere on AGS...though it has not happened regularly since the late 1980s, I believe there have been several instances since 1990. These are the three "series" that come to mind and I believe there are several more. Navy went to Delaware in 1985, 1987, 1989 and 1992. Army went to Yale in 1986 and 1988. Idaho went to Montana in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Idaho has been I-A/FBS since 1997 Other include... Boston College @ Holy Cross, 1986 Va Tech @ Richmond, 1986 Buffalo @ UMass, 1998 (Buffalo went FBS/I-A in 1996) La Tech @ McNeese, 1990 Buffalo @ Liberty, 1998 Youngstown State games at home vs FBS/I-A according to one on AGS... 1997 Buffalo 1995 Central Michigan 1994 Akron & Kent State Illinois St contests at home vs FBS... 1990: Ball St 13 Illinois St 3 1987: Illinois State 20 Western Michigan 6 1984: Tulsa 28 Illinois State 7 1983: Western Michigan 14 Illinois State 13 1993 Western Michigan 1990 Ohio & Akron -
My dumb remark about 'LU at OU'
TexasTerror replied to texasstud28's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Betting line will always be even for FCS games! There's no bets on the table. When an FBS plays an FCS, no lines available. You'd have to hope LU would draw well for SFA, SHSU and McNeese. Those are the three closest schools to Beaumont! -
Keep in mind that SHSU has in the last five years played Texas and Texas Tech. McNeese and SHSU have also played A&M in the past. Oklahoma is one of the few FBS institutions that has not played an FCS. That will change this year when they play the Mocs of Tennessee-Chattanooga. That happened due to them getting caught up in schedule politics ("the business"). SHSU ended up on the Texas schedule when they got down to #70 on their list. They didn't want to. I doubt we'll see Texas and Oklahoma play too many FBS schools. A&M and Tech on the otherhand are willing to do. FYI -- Houston is not interested in playing SLC teams. They realize they have a better chance at the win and a better chance at filling seats when playing the SWAC. After playing SHSU, they've played Grambling, Texas Southern and this year, Southern. Ultimately, Lamar needs to become a "counter" first. Then, they can talk FBS foes. That's 2011. Bet most FBS teams would love a second-year Lamar program that's an upstart...

Read this post by KatMaster... [Hidden Content] With nine-team SLC, that's eight SLC games. Even if a team leaves, expect one of the non-FB schools to add football or the replacement being a football school. SLC is looking at eight SLC games for the time being...three OOC games is nothing, especially with the SWAC being more "schedule-friendly" to the SLC.

Roccaforte to enlist Tic Price as assistant

The Sun Belt and several other FBS conferences, particularly those not in the BCS conferences who have a hard time finding games, have rules prohibiting them from playing at FCS institutions. As far as Sun Belt goes, Lamar does not meet the specifications of membership. You guys would need to elevate your program to FBS and also include softball in your package of additional sports. When's the softball announcement coming? "Any future members must sponsor FBS football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball or women’s soccer.
-
I can tell already I'll be posting this same response on numerous threads... The earliest Lamar would play an FBS is 2011. It comes down to counting as a 'counter'. This means you average a set amount of scholarships (which I believe is like 50 something) over a two year period. UCA could not play an FBS til last year (it was their second year of having 63 scholarships). A school would be stupid to play a game against a team that did not count towards bowl eligibility. The only time it has ever happened was Central Connecticut against Western Michigan last year. Schools like Texas Tech play two FCS programs a year, but they are both counters, that go towards bowl eligibility. Billy Tubbs may be able to work magic with the SLC, but he can't at the NCAA level when it comes to rules and regulations

Lamar Foe Ga State Announces HC
TexasTerror replied to TexasTerror's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It varies...each of the below guys had no prior Div I coaching experience skipped the Sun Belt, C-USA and MWC for more prestigious jobs. And yes, I do feel Navy is a bit prestigious in comparison to those other conferences. Four years as HC at Georgia Southern sent Paul Johnson to Navy. Now at Georgia Tech. Eight years as HC at Eastern Washington sent Paul Wulff to Washington State. 14 years as HC at Youngstown State sent Jim Tressel to Ohio State. I'm drawing blanks on others, but there have been a few. FCS can be a great launching pad for a coach to the "next level". Starting a program and getting them to FCS national championship level in three years would amaze many. FYI -- Lamar will be lucky to sniff the playoffs in their first five years. I think the mountain of McNeese is too high to climb and there's way too many schools coming into Texas, which has negative impacted the programs in the state. SHSU has had to change their recruiting philosophy because of such and has actually done better than the other FCS squads in the state thus far. -
Lamar Foe Ga State Announces HC

Reeves was the consultant and the major guy pushing GA State football on their behalf, helping secure $$$ and providing insight. It had been thought for a good while that he may end up the head coach and he probably had the first shot at such. -
Lamar Foe Ga State Announces HC
TexasTerror replied to TexasTerror's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
SLU had a very explosive offense under Hal Mumme. Their QB ended up transferring to Memphis and doing very well for himself. Set the place on fire and they even went into Lake Charles and pushed the Pokes around, in fact blew them out. LU only did that 4 out of 13 times if I am not mistaken. Humme left, Hankins left. They're the dark horse year in and year out. Sure, the hire for Ga State is an old fart, but he has a name in SEC country and that's good for that region. Many thought you guys would hire an elder statesman from the SWC days... -
Texas Tech announced their OOC slate. Your much anticipated home game against the Cards is Dec. 13. The Red Raiders will also play SHSU (the final game of a three year 2 for 1), SLU and SFA. [Hidden Content]

Believe Ga State just built some excitement around their program. Now, this is a head coach that does this (unlike the hire of Woodard) and this is more along the hire of what I figured LU would have done or atleast more on the scale of what Old Dominion did (hire a proven commodity at the FCS level). Bill Curry will be Georgia St.'s first football coach Former Georgia Tech, Alabama coach picked to build Panthers' program By STAN AWTREY The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 06/11/08 Former Georgia Tech and Alabama coach Bill Curry has been chosen to start the football program at Georgia State and will be introduced Thursday as head coach at a 1:30 p.m. press conference, a school official has confirmed. Georgia State will play its first season in 2010, competing at the level formerly known as Division I-AA. The Panthers will continue to play in the Colonial Athletic Association and will play their home games at the Georgia Dome. The decision to hire Curry, who has been a college football analyst at ESPN since 1997, is expected to energize the Georgia State fan base and stir interest in the program. [Hidden Content]

Just trying to educate the fan base a little on FCS. I'm a big time FCS fan. Probably watched the likes of Towson, Montana and Cal Poly more last season than I did any of the FBS schools. Actually covered FCS football for College Sporting News for a short while before having to pull out due to work restrictions.

Woodard can be open to it all he wants, but LU will not be eligible to play a money game until 2011. LU would have to count as a 'counter' which means they'd have to average a certain amount of scholarships (which I believe is over 50) over a two year time frame. That means 2011. A team from FBS can schedule LU for a money game in 2010, but that team would not be able to count the game towards bowl eligibility. It's a very stupid thing to do, which only one school outside of those who scheduled two FCS games (in which only one counts) was Western Michigan. Also -- September 2010? Aug. 28, 2010 would seem to be the first day that LU would hit the field.

An example of what you guys can expect from Lamar football. Three scrimmages, spaced out including one during homecoming. You guys going to have a football homecoming in 2009...? ------------------- Old Dominion will hold three scrimmages this fall that will be open to the public as the school gears up for its first football season in 2009. Monarchs coach Bobby Wilder said Monday that ODU will hold full-scale scrimmages at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 and Oct. 25 at Powhatan Field near the west end of campus. A third scrimmage will take place at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 22 as part of homecoming weekend. It also will be at Powhatan Field, which is the home field for Maury and Granby high schools. The Monarchs are starting a Division I-AA football program and will bring in their first recruiting class in August. About 75 players are expected to work out this fall in preparation for the 2009 start. The incoming class reports to campus Aug. 13 and begins workouts Aug. 14. [Hidden Content]

Get used to it, UNLV. The FCS schools do compete and actually beat some of these FBS schools on a consistent basis. There's numerous reasons a recruit chooses one school over another. Don't let San Marcos fool you, they aren't the only ones who compete and beat FBS schools in the recruiting wars. McNeese has constantly laid it to La-Lafayette for awhile now, among others. Nicholls St did last year. That option is tough to beat and Bailiff never figured it out while in San Marcos.

This is a remark made by Brandon Williams of the Houston Chronicle...and he also made a few other LU related marks throughout his blog comments. I've done it before, but I encourage you guys to give him some SLC (and LU) related responses so he can continues to cover our schools in the blogs, but also in the Chronicle (which I figure they will if they see the reaction towards the blog)... Figured UNLV would enjoy this from the La Tech main man... Tech coach Dooley on ULM: 'We don't view them as a target' Posted 6/3/2008 11:35 AM CDT on thenewsstar.com BASTROP -- Louisiana Tech football coach and athletics director Derek Dooley gave a presentation on the future of Tech athletics last night, and was asked whether his program will schedule games against ULM in the future. With the two schools separated by just a 35-minute drive on I-20, ULM makes the most sense for Tech when it comes to developing a year-in, year-out regional rivalry. But Dooley didn't seem too interested in locking up a home-and-home series. "In my mind, we're much more elite," Dooley said. "We play in a more elite conference. We don't really acknowledge Northeast. We don't view them as a target, and we don't compete for players." While most of that is true -- the WAC, with two BCS representatives in the last two years, is a more elite football conference than the Sun Belt -- Dooley's assertion that ULM and Tech don't compete for players is odd. Tech doesn't compete for players with most of its scheduled opponents. Dooley isn't about to take players away from Hawaii, or Ole Miss, or Fresno State, or San Jose State. It's hard to see how Tech wouldn't benefit from playing ULM. A home game at Joe Aillet Stadium is sure to be well-attended, given the close proximity of the two schools. Travel costs for a trip to Monroe would be non-existent compared to a WAC game in Hawaii. And if one of Dooley's main goals as athletics director is to establish a better "brand identity" for Tech, wouldn't a regional rivlary be a good start? Can you name Tech's No. 1 rival? (Crickets chirping...) (Uncomfortable silence) Whatever Dooley chooses to call that school down the road -- be it ULM, Northeast, Ulm, UL-Monroe, or something else -- Tech vs. ULM would make for a great football event in NELA, whether Tech wins by 50 points or five. -
SLC BKB Coaches Look to Increase Standing

An article on said subject from the Alexandria Town Talk... Southland looks to continue men's recent success, boost women's programs By Jeff Matthews • [email protected] • June 6, 2008 Many has been the year that the Southland Conference's men's basketball programs struggled to put the "mid" in mid-major. Now that that's changing, school and conference athletic officials want to keep it that way. Basketball was one of the main points of discussion at the SLC's spring meetings last week -- both how to sustain the success the men's programs have enjoyed in recent seasons and how to boost a group of women's programs that have fallen off somewhat.
