  1. I've mentioned this to a few of you via PM... I know that LU has been contacted by a school regarding a "real game" in 2009. We'll see if the Cards administration balks at it, as it seems they are dead set on going with two or three scrimmages between the 'Red' and 'White'. For those that do not know - schools like Lamar can play exhibitions. South Alabama has a few for next year and are on the same timeline as the Cards as far as getting back on the gridiron. USA is scheduling prep schools and JV squads from other institutions. LU should be open to scheduling these opponents, it would generate more excitement to hit someone else besides their own teammates. Would probably park 15k butts in the seats, would it not? May not give LU fans a fair assessment of their team, but would at least provide some additional incentive to the 2009 season, especially for those on here who continue to twiddle their thumbs, waiting for the season opener in 2010 vs McNeese.
  2. This is a different SHSU team. They are improving as the season goes along and unlike previous teams, are not peaking at the wrong time. A young squad, they don't know any better and this is not the year we expected to compete, it was next year.
  3. If your players do not graduate - your APR will not allow you into the postseason, which from what a little birdie told me - was the goal of your program. Got to find the balance somewhere.
  4. Roc is definitely not the best coach nor is he in the top in the league when it comes to X's and O's. He's always had the most "talented" and "athletic" team according to the pundits, but he never gets the results. With all the shortcomings in the talent area this year, namely with the injuries, Roc's inabilities to coach even in the Southland Conference (which I know some of you call "lowly") are being exposed for what they are.
  5. I don't get it -- been reading the whole time how crappy a team TXST is and now they are a few free throws away from walking out of Montagne with a victory over the hapless Cards...
  6. So long to "The Stage"...and from it's open, UT-Arlington could potentially be the nicest facility in the Southland. [Hidden Content]
  7. I thought Lamar was "Cougar Middle" (based on your basketball shortcomings that are very similar and all the Cougar High fans on here) -- sure as hell is not SHSU. If people are going to use those lame jokes on us, it's typically Texas A&M.
  8. Better now than later. Nicholls is a tough out this year. Glad we took the 'L' now and perhaps it will motivate SHSU even more. Kats have played their share of close games (two 2OT games), they can't all go our way.
  9. Not when talking football with you guys. The "crystal ball" is very blurry at this time.
  10. Ask ULL if they are going to schedule any team in the SLC again -- SHSU was a regular visitor on the ULM and ULL slates until we beat both of them in the early part of this century. They lost to McNeese and that was the nail in the coffin. The SWAC will take care of ULL (Southern), ULM (Texas Southern) and the other SBC teams from now on...though I do not see them backing down from LU. ABR -- it's a shame LU is so bad this year in hoops. You guys are really hurting the RPI of the Bearkats this year now that we have to play you guys twice instead of SFA.
  11. Well, SHSU could probably beat ULL 6 out of 10 times. Don't expect them to schedule SHSU in football after we beat them a few years back. ULL has no fear of playing LU, that's for sure.
  12. That's true. ULL is still in the SBC and had a measure of success when they were in the SLC. Two polar opposites.
  13. Pokes - LU's fans remind me a lot of ULL's fans about a year and a half ago. Kept saying they were not going to be outdrawn. Their radio guy even called McNeese a 'JV' team. What happens? Pokes come in droves. One of largest attendances ever and McNeese lays the wood to the school that thinks they are the "University of Louisiana"...
  14. ABR - you know how it is on this board. Living in the past... Of course, I do my best to bring up both past and present - though some of you may want to block out the present based on recent performances.
  15. Always good to see someone with an unbiased opinion on this board. All schools are feeling the pinch. The Louisiana schools more than the Texas schools - but there was even an article today in the SHSU student paper about the pinch with the Bearkat program. I'm sure you guys are feeling too and with the addition of football, it could impact basketball... McNeese football was originally brought up by another poster. I'm in the camp of thinking that the end of LU football did not "create" what is now McNeese football. It had an impact, but not a dramatic one, especially considering how awful a football program LU was for the second half of their time in the SLC and those years afterwards. SHSU football has never slumped as bad as LU did and of course, when LU was around, they had problems beating a SHSU squad that was not even on the same level (NCAA, NAIA-wise) as they were...go figure! Of course, LU has had problems as of late beating sub-Div I teams. I seem to recall a few losses in men's hoops.
  16. So what? Is that going to translate to SLC dominance? I'm sure they'll be back in the area next year if they really want to pound the pavement and once the SETX area people see LU get outdrawn (and beat) at Cardinal Stadium by the Pokes, that may make a difference. Figure McNeese will outdraw the Cards, especially for games in November if the weather drops lower than 60 degrees. Looking at their signees, they had MORE success in terms of quality of player in the Houston area than any team in the SLC. From my recollection, there tends to be more Div I players in the Houston area than SETX. McNeese out-recruited several regional FBS programs IMO and I am sure that's an opinion shared by people who are more in the know than I.
  17. Well, as I told you folks before -- Lamar did not care during the 2007 Legislature to have their name protected alongside SHSU. Now, there's another bill (HB 425) that will hit the floor that will protect Lamar, Sul Ross, SFA and Sam Houston. Apparently, it does not say specific names as I'm not sure why SHSU is included in the article as we already protected our name (along with Tarleton State and Prairie View A&M, who had done so prior) in 2007. This guy is reviving the Lois Kolkhorst bill from 2007 which would have done the same thing. At that time, SFA and Lamar did not step up and fight for the bill -- so the only bill that passed was the other bill regarding just Sam Houston State. We'll see if LU shows interest this go around. While I know you guys think there's nothing to worry about, it does not hurt to have such "help" there... ----------------------------- Saturday, December 20, 2008 Stephen F. Austin State University will be so-named forever if state Rep. Wayne Christian's new legislation passes through the Texas House of Representatives. A bill recently filed by Christian, R-Center, would prevent the governing board of a state university from changing the name of any institution named after a person of significance to Texas history. The bill, HB 425, would apply to four Texas universities: Sam Houston State University, Lamar University (named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas and considered to be the "Father of Texas Public Education"), Sul Ross State University, and SFA. Christian said he is submitting two bills — one to prevent the name changes to any of the four applicable universities in Texas, and another that pertains solely to retaining the SFA name. "I want to protect the SFA name no matter what happens in the future," Christian, a graduate of SFA, said. Christian said "the talk is always there about SFA being taken over by another system," though he doesn't see that happening any time soon. However, he said this bill would cement the SFA name permanently. The legislation addresses concerns that have arisen in the last two decades relating to independent Texas universities that have been swallowed up by major university systems, such as the University of Texas and Texas A&M. For example, East Texas State University merged with the A&M system in 1996, forming Texas A&M University-Commerce. In 2006 and 2007, a significant uproar followed talk of a potential name change for Sam Houston State University to identify it more closely with the Texas State University System, of which it is a member. During the 80th Session of the Texas Legislature in 2007, House Bill 1418 was passed to prevent any name change for the school.
  18. The Bobcats are no slouch. They got wins against UT-Arlington and SELU in their last three games with a setback at McNeese (sound familiar?). They love to run the ball up and down the court like another team we know and are tied with the Cards for that eighth spot in the SLC tourney.
  19. I'm aggravated - we need OOC wins to bolster our conference's RPI. I was rooting for the Cards last night, especially against a team like Utah Valley, who has a loss to Houston Baptist this year. As far as "happy" with the LU faithful being frustrated with the program - this is an annual rite of passage at LU as it relates to the basketball program. It's not like the bottom has fallen out. That may happen if the Cards do not make the SLC tournament, but nothing surprises me just yet...figured it'd be tougher when the Cards had to face more of the Texas schools.
  20. Is it really the players? What's the general consensus on here. Are the players properly prepared for the game(s)? Have they as individuals and as a team progressed?
  21. Lamar-Katy? There's already a fight over UH possibly going into Tomball. Legislature is very protective of Prairie View A&M. SHSU has more than 3/4ths of the Woodlands University Center and needs to take that over. SHSU - The Woodlands
  22. Won't take much for Rice to pass UH in hoops. As long as UH is on the bubble for the NIT and eying a berth to the CBI or CollegeInsider.com, it won't be much. Football-wise, Bailff will be alright for the long run. He lost Dillard and Clement as you mentioned as well as Casey, but I do not think Rice is going to fall too far off the deep-end. Seven and eight win seasons for the Owls would be something to be happy about for that program.
  23. Debatable -- but hey, whatever helps Rice stay atop UH in football is fine with me. Just waiting for "Tournament Tom" to fall behind Ben Braun in a few years as well...
  24. Same question was asked on KatFans.com... Rivals is an incomplete list -- does not have all the FCS teams nor for the ones it does have, have all the players signed on the list. Back in the "day" (a few years ago) - ShowingBlitz.com did a decent job with recruiting rankings and perhaps Sports Network did (can't recall anymore).
  25. The SLC will not go FBS as a whole -- the La. schools are hurting fiscally much more than the Texas schools -- much of which can be blamed on the state government in the Pelican State, which really did not plan well fiscally for the cost of oil. Counting skills are weak? View the all-time series right here...13-8-1 in favor of SHSU with the Bearkats leading the series despite playing a level or FEW below (we were in NAIA for a good while). [Hidden Content] LU 41-0 over SHSU in Sept. 1989. McN 19-8-1 over LU. Another school with some dominance over the Cards...LU won 22-17. Oddly enough, in both cases, the Cards ended a four or six-game losing streak against their foes. Perhaps if LU was not getting it handed to them by their rivals (SHSU, McN) over the few year period before 1989 - LU would not be reflecting back on their 1981 win over Baylor for the last 27, 28 years. Of course, LU has had basketball for years since their last glory and a few of you guys just talk about those glory days -- so nothing changes. I bet anyone he will dodge again. Or find some meaningless SHSU fact, then use that date as a cut off date.
