  1. A little out of yalls area but Tarlandus Mitchell from 1a Alto has had MLB scouts at every game he has pitched.  The times I've seen the radar gun has been consistantly 87-91, gotten as high as 94.  Off-speed stuff is in mid-70 range.  Height will hurt him though being only 5'10.  One scout said they wish they could put his arm in Trey Haley's body. ( Central Heights pitcher who has signed with Rice )

  2. Perfect example that good pitching is good pitching no matter if it's 5a or 1a.  Alto, a 1a team, beat Hemphill earlier in the year allowing only 2 runs, which I'm guesing is Hemphill's lowest output of the year.  They had maybe a handful of hits, if that.  Alto pitched a kid that may go in the upcoming draft for 5 innings and a left-handed kid that is nasty the final 2.  They both combined for over 10 K's in the game.

But I will definately give Hemphill props, easily the best team we have faced this year, they had some monster looking kids in the lineup.

Alto is 11-1 on the year, 5-0 in district.  In 12 games, we have allowed just 29 runs ( little over 2 per game )

  3. It will all depend on the big-school/small-school set up.  Couple of the teams in Alto's district are bigger, but I don't really see them being in the playoff picture.  Lovelady is bigger than Mart and could end up being the big-school.  Either way it doesn't matter, we will line up and play whoever we are put against! 8)

  4. Hemphill is pretty tough, we played them early in the year and won 43-30.  They are mostly a running team.  They have one back, Rhett Smith, who has some wheels.  Their line was big all the way across, I would say just guessing they were all in the 6'-6'1, 225-240 lb range.  They did give us some trouble up front, our All-State LB went out in the 1st qtr. which might have made a difference, but I wont use that as an excuse.

They are suspect on defense, didn't defend the pass very well against us and had trouble with our speed backs.

  5. Alto's team is not big at all.  We have one DT who is about 270 to stuff the middle ( he is a monster btw ) then the rest of our team might have 1-2 players over 200lbs. ( not by much ).  Our OL probably avgs. 190 lbs.  Alto uses great quickness, speed, and strentgh and excellent TEAM speed on defense.  The sack and interception totals for the D' through 3 games is VERY high.

We run the spread on O' and run it pretty well for a 1a squad.  Our RB's are tiny, but they are electrifying!!!  Alto played SA and they looked like monsters across the line and Alto pretty muched did what they wanted to with them in winning 29-0 ( SA just lost 7-6 to a pretty good 2a team in Jefferson ).

Another thing that makes Alto so successful is they have a great coaching staff and go through a hellacious conditioning program during offseason and in practice.  I have seen many games last year and this year when other teams would be getting tired around 2nd, 3rd quarter and Alto would just be getting started.

We play Hemphill this week and that will probably be our toughest test yet, maybe not as talented as SA, but probably will be better all around.

  6. OK guys, being an Alto fan, I know whats realistic and what's not.  NO, a 1a team could not hang with a 4a powerhouse, although I will say Alto had players last year that could have started at the 5a level.  These guys were that good.  I do think Alto could hang with the majority of 3a schools in the area, with the exception of the Liberty Eylaus, Gilmers, WOS, ect.  I saw Rusk, Mabank, and a few other 3a's last year, and I think Alto could have beaten all of them.  When Alto was 2a, they played the likes of Diboll, Kirbyville, Tatum, Center, and others regularly and won, sometimes in a blowout.  Alto had one of them teams last year that only comes around so often.  Alto had a tough passing attack last year that teams could not much up to with the size and speed.

I think Alto would have gone a long ways in the 2a playoffs had we not dropped.  I know you can't compare teams by scores, but East Chambers was 10-0 and had to fight to beat Hemphill in the 1st round and Alto blew Hemphill out of their home stadium 42-0 ( and it could have been a lot worse ).

  7. Groveton wont be anywhere near the team Alto had last year, that is a joke!  Alto tried to play Groveton in a non-district game last year and their coach said "no, but we'll see you the 2nd round of the playoffs"  Well he did and he got drug out behind the woodshed 50-6, and it could have been worse and I wish it would have after that stunt he pulled against Lovelady.  Now you see why Groveton wouldn't play Alto in non-district.  The only time Groveton will ever play Alto in non-district is if they think they can win and that hasn't happened in quiet sometime!  I don't even think Groveton will be as good as last years team!!!  They lost all 5 OL and 3/4 DL and all 3 LB's on defense, that's a lot to replace.

Hull-Daisetta nearly beat them last year in the 1st round and I think they will this year!!

Alto lost their big guns on ofense, but return 8 starters on defense including the Defensive POTY.  Alto returns a total of 16 All-District positions ( 13 players ) so Alto will still be a tough game for whoever steps on the field against them!!

  8. Corrigan is a very solid ball team. Having scrimmaged them and played San Augsutine and Hemphill, I think Corrian is the better of the 3 and will make the playoffs. Can they beat Newton?? Highly doubtful. They have a very good QB and are pretty quick. They do have a lack of size however, didn't look like they had a player over 200 lbs. on the entire team. I think they will get 2nd in district though. My picks:

    1. Newton

    2. Corrigan

    3. Hemphill

    4. Woodville

    5. SA

    6. Shelbyville
