That’s what I’m saying though. Participation in a UIL governed activity isn’t a right. It’s a privilege. And, they’re not forcing anyone to do—or not do—anything. The student could participate in any number of private leagues/organizations. So, I’d be curious if the courts would actually consider it discrimination. I honestly don’t know. But, it would seem to be a gray area to me.

I don’t think simply establishing uniform rules for participation in optional secondary activities would rise to the level of discrimination. It’s simply, “If you want to play, here’s how things have to be,” which is already a fair way to describe the current rules. Having heightened standards for a school to show they aren’t violating the “no transfers solely for sports” rule is hardly some kind of targeted attack on a specific group, unless the specific group we’re talking about is “people who import new players every year” (in which case, they should be targeted).

Let's be honest... kids who are transferring around in high school TYPICALLY aren't going to college to get a degree.  They're heading there for an NIL deal and then a mega deal after they play out their rookie deal in the pros.  Education is the LAST thing on their mind. But statistically speaking, they'll likely never finish a degree plan or DEFINITELY never make the pros.  So why are people selling them a lie?

At that point you have to ask "what's the point of going to college if you're going to be unsuccessful academically, then never make the pros?" You're just setting kids up for failure in life just so that your favorite high school team can get a few more wins.  That's how kids end up back in their hometowns in trouble with the law.

That's my problem with society in general.  One community says "have fun... when it's over you can join the military, hop on that Hazelwood and get moving in life. Or hold down a part time job, take out some loans, further your education and get a semi-white collar job.   Heck, go learn a trade and make decent money... you can have a good life-it's all up to you."  So kids do.

Another community says "the only way you're gonna make it out of here is by balling out or dropping a fire mix-tape."  Which doesn't happen, except when the stars completely align.  When a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of kids actually do manage to earn a living as an athlete, why do we sell that pipe dream to everybody?

I doubt that a single kid from PNG over the last two years ever plays a snap of pro ball.  I'd bet that MAYBE two kids from SOC in the same era will ever play a snap of pro ball.  So was it worth it?

Jackson Christian has a chance to go pro. Might be a small one, but he’s smart and big and works hard.

  3. I think it would be a simple and important starting point to simply require the posting of every single transfer that includes athletic participation (and the sport/UIL activity) on a public, UIL-run website. If we actually got the data to see who is using transfers the most, we’d be better able to see where the problems are. And, if the number was known, it would be harder for the ones abusing the system to pretend it’s all normal. Because, even if there isn’t straight-up cheating going on, it’s plain that the rules are not being applied in a uniform manner across the board, and that the “no transfers for sports” purpose of the rules is being nakedly ignored by certain schools. If we could easily see who and how many and in what sports transfers are happening, it’s easier to actually pinpoint the problem, instead of having to rely on “It’s sure seems like that school has a lot.” Something definitely needs to be done. Some schools are trying to build programs organically. Certain other schools are making sure they always hold all the cards. That’s not how it’s supposed to be under the current rules. Having the actual numbers would help make that more clear.

If you can’t take a L and move on go for it!

So, you admit that’s what SOC should have done last year? And they should universally apologize for trying to delegitimize PNG’s perfectly fair and inspiring win against a team that held all the cards and had every advantage, instead of hurling baseless and stupid accusations of cheating?

SOC is probably still a little tee'd off from last year.  I'm sure this one has been marked on the calendar all year.  If you don't pressure that QB the game will be over quick.  But I'm thinking your coaches already know this.  He wasn't prepared for the Dogs, but I think he'll be prepared Friday.  Good Luck Indians.

I think PnG should rush four. Our linebackers aren’t doing much in pass coverage anyway, so we can send one of them right off the bat. Not a delayed rush, just a straight attack. If they’re going to pass or run the qb, at least make the line work for it.

  6. Probably not an easy way to verify this, but I’m hoping there’s some PnG history sleuths who might be able to answer: Is Jackson Christian the player with most games played in PNG history?

Unless I’m mistaken, he’s been a starter for the last four years. We played 13 (2021), 16 (2022), 16 (2023), and will have at least 14 this year. I know he missed the Port Arthur game in 2023. There may be some other games where he was injured and didn’t play. But, it’s pretty staggering to think about how many more played games he’s had than most players. A lot of guys get 10 whole games for their whole high school varsity career. He’s pushing around 59 (depending on what games he’s missed). For some sense of the scale, I think he was the only player from either Texas High or PNG who played in both the 2021 and 2024 games.

In summary, is anyone aware of the following? (1) what his actual games played number is; and (2) if there has ever been another png player to play so many or more games? I’m not sure it’s possible anyone has matched his number. The other long stretch we had with deep playoff runs was from 1974-1977 and we played a total of 58 games in that stretch. We’re about to play our 59th game in this 2021-2024 stretch. There could theoretically be a freshman starter from the 1974-1977 who played in all four years and had 58 games under his belt. If Jackson missed a few games, he won’t be quite at 59 games played (depending on how you count games where he’s on the sideline injured). I know he missed last year’s Port Arthur game.

Regardless of where he actually falls in the list, it’s clear he’s one of the best and most experienced players in PNG history. His leadership really showed last week.

Sucks that this game is in the 4th round this year & not a state title trilogy! However whoever wins this one better buckle for the state finals because Richmond Randle is no joke!

If Randle makes it to state (highly likely) I think they’re the favorite against whoever makes it out of our side of the bracket. No one is perfect, but their defense is a massive challenge. Not allowing more than 14 points across 13 games is insane for a big school in the spread era, and they’ve played some solid programs.

    Yep.

Prairie View really dropped the ball on this one. Both schools wanted to play there but they did not want to host. Makes no sense.

That’s ridiculous. A perfect opportunity to raise their profile and perhaps find some new talent.

    Weaker schedule or district?

    north shore?

    duncanville?

    longview?

Nothing weak about these 3, can’t speak for the other teams they played

Not to mention holding Huntsville and Marshall to one score is proof positive of strong defense. It’s true that overall they haven’t played as many quality opponents as PnG, but they’ve played well when they did. And, they beat a 6A d2 regional finalist Longview team. We’re battle tested too, but SOC is ready for us.

  10. Indian Nation needs to mobilize. The YouTube broadcast is great, but if you can be there, be there. Give someone a ride. Get a ride. You can’t be loud from your living room. I understand health issues and work/family obligations, but to the extent you aren’t kept from traveling by something like that, we need the 12th Man to show up. Ask Texas High about how loud we can be. This isn’t a “I’ll watch from my recliner” week. This isn’t a “it looks like rain, maybe I won’t go” week. This is an old-fashioned, bring-your-umbrella-and-tough-it-out-with-your-team week. Wet butts dry; championships are forever. We wanted to play them outside of Dallas. Here they are. Let’s get loud.

Part of the issue here is both teams want to play Friday and there's a lack of sizeable neutral venues available Friday night...NRG is available Saturday but not Friday...I know Prairie View has been discussed (seats 15k) with another 2-3k SRO but PV is dragging their feet...(why I dont know it'd be a big crowd for them)....SFA has been discussed as well, but not sure how interested in hosting SFA is....I dont think SOC is against a larger stadium because Coach Todd called me this afternoon and asked for the contact at NRG Stadium...the issue is NRG won't host Friday..

TD’s whole message this season is a willingness to play anywhere. NRG would be fine for both. Alamodome too. Why not just play on Saturday?
