  1. Just have to play the games now. Rankings are fun, but they’re rat poison. Last year, unranked PNG beat three top ten teams on the way to state. This year, I wish we weren’t ranked, as fun as it is to see statewide recognition of where the program is. The only thing that matters is the next play.
  2. Dang. I was thinking Nederland would come in on fire after last week.
  3. It’s not that strange. Playoffs are determined by win total. Unless Anahuac was one win away from playoff contention and Kirbyville one loss away from elimination, the outcome of one game wouldn’t affect the status quo. For example, PNG is playing Galena Park tonight. Galena Park is out of the playoffs whether they beat PNG or not, and PNG is in the playoffs, win or lose tonight. PnG also has at least a share of the district championship, win or lose. So, if Galena Park wins tonight, PNG still goes to the playoffs and Galena Park doesn’t.
  4. I hope not. I’d rather have FBM than Splendora and Lee.
  5. I’ve been watching some Brenham game film. Waiting to see how they do against Montgomery Lake Creek, but they’re not particularly scary. Maybe worse than last year, which isn’t to say they’re bad this year. Just not much of a punch. Not a lot of size, not particularly fast, prone to dumb mistakes, and not well-conditioned. I’d be 50/50 on who wins between Brenham and Nederland. Reminds me of Dayton - they do what they do well, but it’s not that hard to stop them from doing it, and they’re soft of defense. With a garbage time touchdown from them, I think we’re looking at a 42-21 PNG win. This isn’t to discount them - Brenham is a tradition-rich, consistently high-performing program, with strong fan support. They aren’t going to roll over. But, PNG’s defense is too good for Brenham and our offense is going to score. I will say a big advantage Brenham might have is they’ve been playing tough, competitive games, and they’ll go from Lake Creek (who will likely beat them) to us, while we’ve had few competitive minutes since Texas City, and will play a cupcake this week. The team that’s had to fight and scrape always has a competitive edge over a team that has been rolling over people. Png might get shocked if Brenham comes out and punches us in the mouth.
  6. Texas City might be a mirror of PNG last season. Their only loss was to a top-ten team (Last year, PNG’s only district loss was to top-ten FBM) and that loss has kept them out of top ten consideration and kept them in a dark horse status. But, they have very few weaknesses, and keep winning. I wouldn’t be surprised if we met them again in the postseason.
  7. I’m finding that out right now. I swore it was a bear.
  8. Super pumped for this game. I don’t know if we’ve ever hosted Brenham, but they have an awesome program with a great history, and their fans are some of the more pleasant I’ve ever interacted with. Also, I’m a little worried: I have an itch at the back of my brain saying our district hasn’t been as competitive as it was last year. The other district seems more consistently solid, top to bottom. I feel good about our chances, but this isn’t going to be some easy walk to the 2nd round.
  9. It will be home at PNG (home field to top two seeds in each district).
  10. Thomas and Tezeno both coming back is awesome for Nederland. Thomas is one of the most graceful runners I’ve seen. He might as well be ice skating.
  11. What about Hubert Thomas and Tezino? Thomas is crazy fast.
  12. I agree - It’s almost a formality, except for PNG having something to play for in getting an outright district championship, and I guess galena park could be motivated by taking that away from us (if we lose, we share district champs with TC and get the 1-seed, unless Nederland beats TC, in which case we win outright regardless of whether we beat Galena Park). But, other than that it’s just “You have to play another game that might result in injuries, and there’s not actually that much at stake. I guess it’s a chance to take a low-pressure breather before the playoff grind, which will hopefully be long.
  13. Hard to know what to discuss. Can’t see Galena Park winning, but anything can happen so we need to dial in and leave no doubt and have an injury free game across the board. I hope the receivers get a lot of reps. Way too many dropped passes, all season. This needs to be a smooth tune up for playoffs that ends with us celebrating an outright district championship and getting ready to host (probably) Brenham.
  14. He’s scary. I’m not joking when I say TC could win the region. They’ve got something going on, and they haven’t looked back at all since losing to PNG.
  15. Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a good team is to lose, as long as it’s to a good team. You get your weaknesses exposed so you can improve.
  16. Did PNG and Nederland not send in their numbers?
  17. Figure we might as well get this started. What does Nederland have to do to beat Texas City? My gut says TC wins (and I think they’re a dark horse for the regional final), but I’m back to cheering for Nederland, so here goes. This is an interesting matchup because the two teams are loosely similar. They both tend to rely on one or two receivers, a key RB, and a more-or-less consistent dual threat QB. Where Ned falls off is TC is more consistent in their level of play, makes fewer mistakes, and is more physical. While most of the attention has been on PNG, FBM, and even Nederland (as the surprising contender in the season), TC has quietly stacked up double-digit wins. They have a strong defense and a score-at-any-moment offense. On the other hand, Nederland feels like the half-cooked model of Texas City. Similar, but less complete. Dangerous, but not always dangerous. Sunday will need to play mistake-free. I think we can expect Nederland to get better from MCM. So, let’s hear it.
  18. Idiotic - I just assumed he was ready to relax. 1993-2016 is a long time.
  19. Nederland had good size in the trenches in the 2012-2015 era, and it was complimented with serious conditioning.
