This is an interesting one. Pieper is brand new but riding a 12-1 season and the hot arm of Jake South’s 41 touchdowns in only their second year of varsity play. Last week they upset Alamo Heights, a favorite to win Region 4. Liberty Hill returns to its familiar spot in the Region 4 Final, but appears more vulnerable than ever with four losses on the season, including one suffered in Week 10 from a dominant Pieper squad for the district championship. Pieper looks like the favorite, and if you watch these two teams’ last matchup (available on YouTube), a second win looks likely. It’s hard to beat a good team twice, and Liberty Hill is good. Pieper is better, but Liberty Hill’s playoff experience is an advantage. It’s a toss up, but I think the winner of PNG-Huntsville will be playing Pieper for a trip to AT&T.

Any word on Chatagnier? After his fumble we didn’t see him again the rest of the night. It looked like he took a huge hit when the ball was knocked loose. Is he hurt? -

Is that something I can add, or does an admin have to do it? -
Bring it on. Huntsville has proven definitively its defense is legit - Possibly equal to PNG’s. This is going to be a hard-hitting slugfest. Let’s hear it.

We certainly didn’t embarrass them. Both teams played super well. Good job PnG! -

So far so good. It’s a long ball game. Defense is playing by the skin of its teeth, Bailey is on the money, and receivers (especially Shae) are making serious catches. LC is down - you can tell they’re frustrated, but this is a very good offense, capable of breaking it open. Let’s bring it home. -

I hear you, and I agree. I’m not wedded to the word “embarrass.” The part of me that wants to accurately predict the score responsibly knows it will likely be a one-score game. There’s another part, based on specific characteristics and tendencies of both teams, that sees ways that we specifically can counter what they do, and they don’t have a specific counter to what we do, and that could result in a lopsided and uncharacteristic score. It could easily go the other way. We’ve got flaws. We’ll have to see. -

Wouldn’t that be an embarrassment? To take a team that thinks it’s an unstoppable juggernaut and demonstrate that it can be controlled? To win, we’ll have to stop them consistently. If we do that, we prove they were just bullying the little kids and pretending that meant they could do the same to the big kids. Add the #1 ranking, that’s prime embarrassment territory. So, I think of it as embarrassment as proof-of-concept. But, I also won’t be surprised if we’re comfortably in control the entire time and quietly build a double, triple-digit score. In 28 games at PNG under this coaching staff, the defense failed to show up in only one of them (the very first). We have the system and guys to do it. That being said, “embarrassment” isn’t the goal. I’ll take a one-point win. -

I think the computer is giving MLC a lot of credit for running up the score against already defeated teams. They don’t play defense, and their offense isn’t nearly so good against even decent competition. I normally don’t feel confident going into a playoff game, but I think we’re going to embarrass them. -

I watched that video - I’m not sure what to think. On the one hand, I think SOC is clearly the best in the state, but their secondary is more vulnerable than last year, and they may even be someone we can run against. They may be a little smaller than last year too. But, they’re still big and fast, and extremely well-coached. What struck me was they seem to run a similar offense and defense to PNG - just a lot of power running with enough passes to keep the defense honest. The two teams are mirrors of each other (I think some of the coaches share coaching trees). The biggest difference, other than size and speed, is their qb runs , and not just in power wildcat formations. But, the overall concepts look the same. I think Lovejoy might take them out. Melissa got handled , but they showed that throwing a variety of passes all over the field can expose SOC. Melissa didn’t start moving the ball until they committed to passing. Lovejoy is built for passing. They’re probably the only team in the state that matches SOC’s D1 secondary with a D1 receiving corp. Still, I’d have to predict a SOC victory when that game comes. -

I love this. In 2012 I was at the regional semis and quarterfinals for Nederland. Even wore black and gold. It was a great time, especially that last touchdown pass against Pearland Dawson - one of the top sports experiences of my life. The crowd went ballistic. -
