Cubs edge Astros In Finale At Wrigley CHICAGO – Derrek Lee tormented the Astros yet again Sunday afternoon, depositing Oscar Villarreal’s offering over the center field wall at Wrigley Field to back teammate Carlos Zambrano’s impressive effort. Lee’s home run in the bottom of seventh inning gave the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory before a crowd of 40,929. The score was tied at 2 with one out in the seventh when Lee homered, helping the Cubs win the three-game series 2-1. With the loss, the Astros head to Minute Maid Park for the home opener Monday night with a 2-5 record after dropping a four-game season-opening series against the San Diego Padres and the next one in Chicago. Brandon Backe settled for a no-decision after holding the Cubs to six hits and two runs with three walks and seven strikeouts over six innings. Zambrano held the Astros to seven hits and two runs with seven strikeouts over seven innings. The Astros couldn’t capitalize in the first inning after Michael Bourn led off with a single to right and Hunter Pence followed with a double to left. Darin Erstad, who started in place of the injured Lance Berkman, struck out. Then Zambrano induced Carlos Lee’s fly out to shallow left field, where Alfonso Soriano made the catch and delivered a perfect throw home to get the speedy Bourn to end the inning. Chicago returned the favor by stranding two men in the bottom of the first. The Cubs weren’t as forgiving in the second inning. Mark DeRosa led off with a single through the left side. With DeRosa on the move, Ryan Theriot hit a fielder’s choice grounder to third. Geoff Blum, who started for the injured Ty Wigginton at third, tried to get DeRosa at second base. His throw was late, though, leaving both men on base safely. Henry Blanco loaded the bases with a single to right. The Cubs went ahead 1-0 when DeRosa scored as Zambrano hit a double play grounder to second. The Astros tied the score in the third, when Backe led off with a double to right, moved to third on Bourn’s grounder to second and scored on Erstad’s two-out single. Soriano was 1-for-24 to start the season before ripping Backe’s curveball for a leadoff home run to left field in the fifth inning, giving the Cubs a 2-1 lead. That frame could have been worse for Backe, who retired Reed Johnson for the first out before loading the bases. He then struck out DeRosa and induced Theriot’s grounder to short to strand the bases loaded. Miguel Tejada tied the score at 2 by depositing Zambrano’s 0-2 pitch into the left field bleachers for a leadoff home run in the seventh. Lee returned the favor in the bottom of the inning against Villarreal.

Ex-Hilltopper assistant McDonald to take over at Western Kentucky Texas assistant Ken McDonald will be named the head coach at Western Kentucky at a news conference Sunday. The announcement will be at 3 p.m. ET in Bowling Green, Ky. to introduce McDonald, who has worked under Rick Barnes with the Longhorns since 2004. McDonald had been an assistant at Western Kentucky under Dennis Felton from 1998-2003. McDonald was with Felton when the Hilltoppers went to three straight NCAA tournaments and were 100-54 during McDonald's five seasons with the program. McDonald had been an assistant under Barnes at Clemson for four years prior to going to Western Kentucky in 1998. McDonald replaces Darrin Horn, who left to take the head coaching job at South Carolina last week. Horn led the Hilltoppers to the Sweet 16, beating Drake 101-99 in the tournament's most thrilling game on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Ty Rogers in overtime. Western Kentucky then went on to beat San Diego in the second round before losing to UCLA in the Sweet 16. The Hilltoppers, who finished 29-7 overall and 16-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, lose their top three players in seniors Courtney Lee, Tyrone Brazelton and Rogers. Western Kentucky also interviewed Florida assistant coach Larry Shyatt and Minnesota assistant coach Vince Taylor for the position over the weekend.
