  1. Texas Assistant Takes Over At Western Kentucky BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Texas assistant coach Ken McDonald will take over as head coach at Western Kentucky. McDonald replaces Darrin Horn, who left last week to become the head coach at South Carolina. Athletic director Wood Selig confirmed the hire. McDonald will be formally introduced at a news conference Sunday afternoon. McDonald spent the last four years at Texas under Rick Barnes. He previously worked as an assistant at Western Kentucky under Dennis Felton from 1998-2003, helping the Hilltoppers reach the NCAA tournament during his final three seasons with the program. The Hilltoppers went 29-7 this season, winning the Sun Belt Conference tournament and advancing to the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the first time in 15 years before falling to UCLA.

  3. Kirbyville girls win district tennis titles The Enterprise BEAUMONT - The regional qualifiers have been determined. The Bridge City boys won the District 21-3A Tennis Championships held at Lamar University Saturday, and Kirbyville won the girls division. Bridge City's boys finished the tournament with a total of 10.5 points. Hamshire-Fannett and Kirbyville ended in a two-way tie for second place with 9 points each. The Kirbyville girls won their title with 13 points. Orangefield finished second with 10 points, while Silsbee finished third with nine. Silsbee's Matthew Deaver won his second-straight district title in boys singles. Deaver, who made it to the Class 3A state semifinals a year ago, beat Orangefield's Tyler Angelle 6-0, 6-0 to advance. Kirbyville's Shawn Atkins and Michael Whitten won boys doubles. Atkins and Whitten beat Hamshire-Fannett's Terry Affolter and Nolan Nix 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Orangefield's Erin Kelly won the girls singles by beating Bridge City's Meredith Miller 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Kirbyville's Rachael Jones and Jessica Barfield beat Silsbee's Brittney Burrell and Rachael Easley in girls doubles 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Bridge City's Shanita Maceda and Devon Armstrong beat Bridge City's Katlyn Reynolds and Kegan Duplechin 7-6, 6-1 in mixed doubles.

Friendswood nabs title BRYAN — Sophomore forward Annalisa Hall had three goals and two assists, and Friendswood cruised to its third consecutive regional title with a 7-0 victory over Whitehouse in the Class 4A Region III soccer final Friday at Viking Stadium. The Lady Mustangs (23-1-5), who made the state championship game last season, advance to next week's final four in Round Rock. Whitehouse finishes the year 21-3. Friendswood needed little time to get on the board, thanks to a score by senior midfielder Katelyn Kaspar with 35:58 remaining in the first half. The outcome was all but decided by halftime with Friendswood leading 4-0; junior midfielder Sara Brezina scored on a throw-in and Whitehouse was charged with an own goal. The boys final between Brenham and Nacogdoches was postponed because of weather. Originally scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, the match was moved to 5 p.m. today at Sam Houston State University. Brenham (21-2-2) is seeking its first berth in the state tournament since 2004. Nacogdoches (22-0-1) is playing in its first regional final.

Bridge City boys win 21-3A tennis title Van Wade The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — A nice cast of Orange County tennis players will represent District 21-3A at the Class 3A Region III Tennis Tournament by posting outstanding performances at the 21-3A Championships on Saturday at Lamar University. Orangefield’s Erin Kelley took home first place in girls singles as she fought off a tough challenge by Bridge City’s Meredith Miller 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 as both standouts qualified for the 3A Region III Meet that will be upcoming in Bryan. The Bridge City mixed doubles team of Shanita Maceda and Devon Armstrong captured the mixed doubles crown by dowing Cardinal teammates Katelyn Reynolds and Kegan Duplechin 7-6 (9-7), 6-1. Orangefield junior Tyler Angelle eartned a regional spot by placing second Saturday as he fell to top-seed Matthew Deaver of Silsbee 6-0, 6-0, The girls doubles champion were Kirbyville’s Jessica Barefield and Rachel Jones while the boys doubles champions were Kirbyville’s Cole Atkinson and Lane Tippett. The Bridge City boys won the first-place team trophy while Kirbyville took home the girls crown.
