Jordan From Dallas Kimball To Be The New HC At LaMarque

Burley picks new head football coach, AD By Joshua Buckley The Daily News Published April 4, 2008 LA MARQUE — La Marque Superintendent Ecomet Burley has decided on the next athletic director and head football coach of La Marque High School. In a phone interview with The Daily News on Thursday afternoon, Burley said he has offered the job to one of the finalists and will make a recommendation for hire at the next La Marque Independent School District board meeting April 10. Burley said Aldine Nimitz head coach David Suggs withdrew his name from consideration for the job, meaning the recommendation for the position will be one of the two remaining finalists — Dallas Kimball head coach Darrell Jordan or Grapevine head coach Gary Mullins. Burley did not disclose which candidate he was recommending to the board, but his comments indicated the choice is likely going to be Jordan. Jordan took over as head coach at Kimball in 2001. In his seven seasons there, he has a 52-29 record and has advanced to the playoffs each year. “I think (the candidate’s) record speaks for itself,†Burley said. “He has proven he can win and can win in a tough area. He’ll do a great job, and I have no concerns.†Burley also discussed the situation regarding Flower Mound defensive coordinator Chuck Vincent. Vincent told The Daily News on Wednesday he was withdrawing his name from consideration after Burley offered him the job and then changed his mind a few hours later. Burley confirmed he did offer the job to Vincent, a defensive coordinator at La Marque during the 2006 state championship season, but said he started to rethink his decision after Vincent presented a number of demands that dealt with family, housing, salary and schedules for coaches. “He wanted a lot,†Burley said. “We were able to meet most of those except one or two, but it caused me to sit back and think about it some more.†Burley said upon further thought, he was reminded of an incident in 2006, when he saw “60 to 70 kids literally sitting and not doing anything†in a P.E. class Vincent was in charge of. “I called Coach Vincent back and reminded him that I had a problem with that and did not want coaches with that attitude,†Burley said. “He assured me that wouldn’t be the case but said if I didn’t have faith or trust in him, then we should just nix the deal.†Vincent said he was just doing as he was told in the P.E. class and insisted he was “education first.†But sensing doubt in Burley’s decision, Vincent chose to withdraw from the search. “It was one of those deals where we both agreed it was not going to work out, and we let it end at that,†Burley said. So what does Burley say to La Marque fans concerned the Cougars aren’t getting the superintendent’s first, or even second, choice? “The person I’m going with was high on my list,†he said. “Once I cleared all his references and talked to some more people, any fears I had about him were put to rest. I’m not settling for someone — he is an outstanding person, and he’ll do a great job.†-
BH boys edge Forest Brook, BH girls cruise By Dave Rogers Published April 4, 2008 MONT BELVIEU – This time there was a little drama. Sure, Barbers Hill’s boys and girls wrapped up their seventh straight sweep of district track titles at Thursday’s finale of the 21-4A track championships, but not without a touch of tension. Suspense made itself felt in the boys’ portion of the meet, as coach Dwayne Nunez’ Eagles led Forest Brook by just 10 points, 100-90, with two races to go. But Jess Williams won the 1,600 meters for Barbers Hill, with Tim Ramsey fourth, to put the Eagles up 24 points and out of the Jaguars’ reach. For good measure, the Eagles finished third in the 1,600-meter relay. That gave them a final tally of 126 points, 14 more than runnerup Forest Brook. Crosby, led by Chance Casey’s three individual wins, finished third with 100.5 points. “It was pretty nervous going in,†said Nunez, who took over coaching the BH boys at midseason a year ago. “We played with the points last night, and thought it might go down to the last race.†If the Lady Eagles didn’t put this one away with 63 points after Tuesday’s first seven events, then it sure seemed all academic when Shannon Mudd and Hillary Poole shot out to big early leads in easily winning the 800 meters and 100-meter hurdles, two of Thursday’s first three races. The Lady Eagles wound up with more than twice as many points as second-place Forest Brook, 180-88. C.E. King was a point back with 87 and Crosby’s girls were fourth with 75 points. And, as it always is with Barbers Hill, it wasn’t just the first-place finishers that did it. It was the Eagles’ depth. “Everybody ran well,†BH girls’ coach Andy Terrasso said. “We went 1-2-3 in the 800, 1-2 in the 300 hurdles and qualified all of our relays. “Lauren Fine stepped in on the 4x200 relay and did a good job. The hurdlers all ran personal bests. I’m just proud of the girls.†Mudd, who finished third in the high jump and fifth in the discus Tuesday, raced out to a big lead in the 800 meters, fought through the final turn and finished in 2 minutes, 29.96 seconds. That was nearly 30 yards ahead of teammates Larissa Rios and Samantha Rhodes for a 1-2-3 Lady Eagle finish. Rios kicked past Rhodes on the final straightaway for second. “Shannon has run 2:27, but with this wind, I was pleased with her,†Terrasso said. “She’s a strong girl and she was able to handle the wind better than the rest.†Poole had the wind at her back when she zipped to a 15.07 clocking in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing a good 10 meters ahead of runnerup Nicole Davis of C.E. King (16.50). In the 300 hurdles, her time was 45.77 seconds and Meghan McCoy (47.15) followed her in second. Macy Moore was fourth in 49.71. “I’ve had a real good year this year, and I’m just getting ready to move on,†Poole said. First, though, is the Region III-4A meet at Huntsville April 25-26. The top three finishers in each district event advance to regionals. The Lady Eagles will have regional qualifiers in 13 slots, while the Eagle boys qualified in a dozen slots. Williams was the workhorse Thursday, leading teammate Austin Cain to a 1-2 Barbers Hill finish in the boys’ 800, winning the 1,600, then coming back 25 minutes later and anchoring the third-place 4x400-meter relay team. Casey backed up Tuesday’s high jump victory with an easy sweep of Thursday’s two hurdles races. He won the 110s in a wind-assisted 14.03 and came back to take the 300s in 38.03. “Today was pretty sloppy,†said the junior who won his two races by a combined time of more than three seconds. “I want to try to go 36 at regionals and get in the 13s in the 110s.â€

Dogs, Vidor facing key matchup AREA ROUNDUP By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Nederland's visit to Vidor for a 7 o'clock District 22-4A matchup with the Pirates matchup has plenty at stake for both teams. On one hand there is Vidor, who is coming off back-to-back losses. In a span of five days, the Pirates went from undefeated and on top of District 22-4A to 5-2 after losses to Ozen (4-3) and Little Cypress-Mauriceville (6-1). Losing always hurts but doing it in the fashion Vidor has done it in over the past week has been extra painful. On Tuesday, the Pirates endured a 13-1 thumping from LC-M. After the last two games, there are probably only two versions the Pirates want Saturday's papers to read like. The first scenario probably goes something like: Vidor rebounds, stomps hole in Nederland. The Pirates' second choice has a slightly different ring to it but keeps the same connotation: Vidor rebounds, pulls out squeaker over Dogs. A third straight loss could be the final straw in the Pirates' undoing this season since tonight's game is just the first game in the second half of district play. That means Vidor has LC-M, Ozen and Port Neches-Groves (6-1) left on the schedule. Then, there is Nederland. The Dogs are 4-3 in district, having close losses against the top three teams in the leauge. In every league loss the Bulldogs have had this season, they have led each game at one time or another. In fact, they led Vidor 2-0 for four innings before the wheels came off and the Pirates worked the Dogs over for a 6-2 win in Nederland on March 11. It was a very frustrating loss for Nederland considering it was the first game of district, the second straight loss and three of four to Vidor (dating back to last season). To top things off, the Pirates beat Nederland in a play-in playoff game in 2007 that kept the Dogs from the postseason. With PN-G, LC-M and Ozen still left on the schedule, Nederland could really use a win tonight if its season plans include the playoffs. Dropping to 4-4 and two games behind Vidor would be a considerable blow for the Bulldogs, especially, with Ozen champing at the bit. A win keeps Nederland in some control of its own destiny, which won't be any clearer after a win tonight. But destiny looks better with a win over Vidor, rather than a loss. In other district matchups, PN-G travels to Beaumont to play Ozen. In District 21-5A, Memorial is at Kingwood. Port Arthur is coming off a 7-6 win over Humble on Tuesday. PN-G, meanwhile, dismantled Dayton 8-2 on Tuesday. In the Tribe's first meeting with Ozen, PN-G crushed the Panthers 10-0. That game was scheduled to be in Beaumont but because of weather, the teams agreed to swap home sites.

Underclassmen win big at 21-3A Field Events Van Wade The Orange Leader SILSBEE — Once again, the Bridge City Cardinals dominated the 3,200 at the District 21-3A Track & Field Championships. The scary thing for the rest of the district, the boys winner was a sophomore and the girls winner was just a freshman Thursday at Silsbee High School. On the boys side, sophomore Tim Cude won the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes, 15.39 seconds while freshman Mary Nguyen captured the event in the girls field, winning with a time of 13:12.54. Cude was thrilled with his performance despite the warm and windy conditions Thursday. “My goal all year long was to win this event,†said Cude. “The wind, I knew I would have to adjust to it early and just run my race. To be able to do this as a sophomore, that's a tremendous feeling. Now, I’m looking forward to regionals.†Cardinal coach Cody Knight was happy about Cude’s performance. “I always knew Tim had it in him,†said Knight. “His work ethic has been unreal since the end of the cross country season. He trains so hard. It’s not uncommon for him to run 10 miles a couple times a week and it's really paying off for him.†Cude’s senior teammate Ryan Kelly will join him at regionals by placing second in 10:33.57. Both should make a run at the 1,600 meters in the running finals Saturday, which start at 2 p.m. Both have recently ran that race in less than 4:40. Nguyen didn’t let the emotion of running in her first 21-3A Meet faze her. “I really didn’t feel any pressure, I just went out and ran my race,†Nguyen said. “It was a little hot and windy but I was able to keep my focus. I’m just happy to be able to accomplish this with it being my first year on varsity and all.†“I’m so thrilled for Mary,†said Knight. “She’s made an amazing adjustment from running at the junior high level to the varsity level in one year. The workouts are definitely a little different at each one of those levels. It didn’t take her long to fit in and she has a heart of a champion.†The Bridge City distance runners weren’t the only Orange County athletes that punched their tickets to the upcoming Cass 3A Region III Meet in the field events with the top three in each event qualifying for the next level. West Orange-Stark sophomore James Haynes made it an underclassmen kind of day when he won the boys triple jump with a superb leap of 44-feet, 3-inches. He also qualified for regionals by nabbing second in the long jump with a leap of 21-5. WO-S also got a first-place in the shot put as Eric Arnold heaved a season-best mark of 47-8. Lady Cardinal Chrystal Miller claimed the girls long jump with a five-foot leap while Orangefield's Laura Riddick was second with a 5-10 effort. Bridge City's Chelsea Coleman was third in the pole vault with a 8-6 effort. WO-S freshman Daneyle Thomas nabbed second in the long jump with a mark of 16-9. Orangefield’s Allie Beach was third in the discus with a toss of 90-10. On the boys side of the ledger the Orangefield Bobcats went 2-3 in the discus as Jeremy Granger was second with a toss of 136-5 and teammate Harry Corbett was third with a mark of 132-4. Corbett was also third in the shot put with a 46-9 effort. Orangefield’s Derek Evans earned third in the high jump with a 5-10 effort. Silsbee’s Donovan Harris soared to 6-6 to win that event. Bobcat Garrett Holmes was third in the polevault with an 11-6 effort. TSU set to name Harvey as new basketball coach Texas Southern University will introduce Tony Harvey as its new men's basketball coach Friday at an 11 a.m. news conference, according to two people familiar with the situation. Harvey coached as an assistant at Missouri from 1999-2004, helping the program to four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. According to media reports, he left the school in 2004 after being accused of multiple NCAA rules violations, including giving cash to former guard Ricky Clemons and impermissible contact with recruits. He was then cleared of any wrongdoing in early 2006. Harvey has also had coaching stints with Southern and Eastern Michigan. The news comes as a surprise to Marty Shellist, the attorney for Kevin Granger, who was expected to replace Robert Moreland when the legendary coach completed his interim role on March 31. Shellist said Granger had entered a gentleman's agreement with the school and then-athletic director Alois Blackwell, but when new president John Rudley fired Blackwell on Feb. 12, Granger's deal went along with it. "It's clear that TSU has breeched its commitment to Kevin," said Shellist on Thursday afternoon. "There's only two ways that this can be worked out: either the school compensates him for damages or this can be taken to a court of law. Inaction is not an option in this case." Granger, who played at TSU from 1992-96 and had his jersey retired by the school, left Worthing High School last October to serve under Moreland. "Kevin is so committed and dedicated to the school that it is such a disappointment to hear that he won't coach TSU," said Shellist. "He had the support of professional athletes, students and the community that were excited about having him there." Granger's support was amplified by former Rockets guard and current TNT basketball analyst Kenny Smith, who took the time to blast TSU on a March 18 telecast. Harvey will end TSU's search for a full-time coach, which began when Blackwell fired Ronnie Courtney last July. Interim athletic director Johnnie Cole was out of town and was not available for comment.
