Rivals.com The Texas Longhorns 2009 recruiting class has been filling up at an unbelievable rate since signing day. Last weekend, the Longhorns played host to some of 2010's top in state prospects, showing off everything the program has to offer with at yearly spring game. One of the top sophomore prospects on hand was Silsbee quarterback Jeremy Johnson and the 6-2, 173-pound fleet-footed quarterback took in Austin. If the Longhorns were hoping to make a big impression, then it was a mission accomplished. "I went to Texas for their spring game," Johnson said. "I went last weekend on the 29th with my dad. I liked it, man. I liked the atmosphere. It's a big place. All of the coaches are cool down there. I was the only sophomore quarterback at the spring game. I talked to Major Applewhite. He told me how excited he was that I came down and he talked to me about coming to their camp this summer," Johnson is coming off of a season in which he completed 94 of 175 passes (10 INT's) for 1,675 yards and 17 touchdowns, as well as rushing for 621 yards and nine scores. The tremendous sophomore campaign earned him 21-3A sophomore of the year honors. It comes without surprise that colleges programs are beginning to take notice. "Georgia and Texas have come by. Houston too. I'm going to Texas, U of H (brother plays there) and maybe OU camps," Johnson said. Johnson, who is currently competing for the Silsbee track team, says he watched the quarterbacks closely and was impressed by their technique. "Their technique is good. They lead the team and know what is going on with all of the players. I was impressed watching them," Johnson said. The junior-to-be, who lists the Miami Hurricanes as his childhood favorite, says his father, Byron Johnson, came away very impressed. "He really liked it. He wants me to go to Texas." Johnson said. The Golden Triangle area star in the making will be competing for a spot in the 3A regional meet on the track this weekend in the 200-meters (best time of 22.3), 800-meter relay and 400-meter relay. He already posted a 21'2" long jump good for third in the district meet.

Dayton’s Dugat commits to TCU By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published April 5, 2008 DAYTON — Dayton’s A.J. Dugat has been very busy since the Broncos’ march to the Class 4A Division II football semifinals. The junior was a starter on the basketball team and is a member of the Bronco 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams. Still, Dugat found time to make a big decision — he verbally committed to play football at Texas Christian University, beginning in 2009. “Everything was close together. It’s a family there,†Dugat said. “Offensively, I will play a little bit of everywhere. They run the same thing that we do out of the shotgun.†As a multiple weapon offensively, Dugat will fit into the Horned Frogs’ system. Last season he had 311 yards on 39 rushes and scored eight touchdowns in addition to his 67 receptions for 957 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dugat was also a standout in the defensive secondary. Entering his final season at Dayton, Dugat is one of the most highly sought athletes in the state. He is ranked 46th in the state by the Dallas Morning News and is ranked 74th in the country as a four star athlete by Scout.com. The same service has Dayton quarterback Cody Green listed at 23rd in the nation. Since the 2007 season came to an end, Dugat has been preparing for his senior campaign. Thanks to offseason workouts, he has added eight pounds to his frame, now at 211 pounds, while maintaining his 4.5 forty speed. This past basketball season he was ranked 14th in the Southeast Texas region by Hoopsinsider.com. As with all commitments this time of year, Dugat’s is subject to change. He intends to visit the University of Houston and will be attending camps in Houston as well as Baylor and the University of Texas.

Earnhardt Jr. keeps Hendrick's hot streak alive, gets first pole in 22 races FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the third Hendrick driver to earn a pole this season. Now maybe he can be the first to win a race. Earnhardt, the Hendrick newcomer and the team's most consistent finisher with four consecutive top 10s, ran a fast lap of 190.907 mph Friday at Texas Motor Speedway to earn the pole for the Samsung 500. It is his first pole in 22 races, since Pocono in August. "The car handled really good," Earnhardt said. "The car is as good and as comfortable ... It could be a good weekend for us." The qualifying run came on the 10th anniversary of Earnhardt's first NASCAR victory, a Nationwide race at Texas. Earnhardt also got his first Sprint Cup victory at the 1½-mile high-banked track in 2000. Starting beside Earnhardt's No. 88 Chevrolet on the front row will be Carl Edwards, who ran a lap of 189.487 in his Ford. It is the first time Edwards, the only driver with two Cup victories this season, has started better than 10th at Texas, where he won the 2005 fall race. Kyle Busch will start third, followed by Ryan Newman and Jimmie Johnson. Points leader Jeff Burton qualified 35th. Qualifying was stopped for more than an hour after rookie driver Michael McDowell was involved in a horrific tumbling crash. McDowell walked away virtually unscathed, but track officials had to make temporary repairs to the SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) barrier that McDowell hit. McDowell was going into the first turn of his second lap when his No. 00 Toyota got loose, then slammed almost headfirst into the barrier. The car ricocheted off the wall and onto its roof, then rolled at least eight times before finally coming to rest at the bottom of the high-banked track. "I feel great, nothing broke," McDowell said. "I didn't lose consciousness. I felt every roll down the hill." A Hendrick driver has won the pole at four of the five tracks where qualifying hasn't been rained out. Two-time defending Cup champion Johnson was the polesitter at Daytona, and Jeff Gordon won the last two poles determined on the track. But Hendrick Motorsports, which won 18 races last season, is still looking for its first victory this year. And Earnhardt is trying to break a 68-race winless streak that dates back to Richmond in May 2006. "I think a majority of the people are as hungry as I am for a win," Earnhardt said. "The thing that I'm trying not to look past or under-appreciate is how much better I'm doing in my career, in this position I'm in this year, and how much a better situation I'm in and how much happier I am as a person." Earnhardt finished ninth at Daytona, but since a 40th-place finish at Fontana has been sixth or better the last four races. "I want to go out there and get a win, get that out of the way," Earnhardt said. "But how much better everything is for me right now is overwhelming in a sense." Gordon, who hasn't won a race at Texas, will start 18th, four spots ahead of Casey Mears, the other Hendrick driver. Dario Franchitti, Chad McCumbee and Burney Lamar didn't qualify. It is the first Cup race that Franchitti, last year's IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, will miss for Chip Ganassi. McDowell made his Cup debut last week at Martinsville. A developmental driver for Michael Waltrip Racing, he was promoted to the Cup level to fill a hole in the lineup created when Dale Jarrett retired. The 23-year-old McDowell finished 26th there and will start 40th at Texas on owners points.

Lamar Gets Past Wild Nicholls State Bunch, 5-2 Cardinals win for the 11th-straight time over the Colonels April 4, 2008 THIBODAUX, La. -- Lamar scored four runs with two out in the fifth and that was all starter Brian Sisk needed to hold off a scrappy Nicholls State team as Lamar won 5-2 in the first game of a Southland Conference series at Ray Didier Field Friday night. Lamar (19-9, 9-1 SLC) won its eighth-consecutive conference game and 11th-straight over Nicholls State (5-23, 1-9). Nicholls opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of second. Brett Hoeflich led off with a triple to left center and scored when Anthony Wray singled down the left field line. Wray eventually scored from second on a T.J. Menerney single. Lamar tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on a Steven Tucker single up the middle which allowed Anthony Moore and Brian Taylor to score. Chris Dunkin was then hit by Jake Parrish before David Moore walked to load the bases. The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead on the second wild pitch of the inning that allowed all three runners to advance. Travis Dunson then hit a ground ball that Kevin Kulbeth misplayed at shortstop when David Moore crossed in front of the ball allowing Dunkin to score and force Parrish from the game with LU ahead 4-2. In the seventh, Jeff Vickers drove in his team-leading 23rd RBI with a sacrfice fly to centerfield. Sisk (6-1) meanwhile settled down from his shaky second inning to win his third-consecutive game. His complete-game, five-strikeout performance was his longest outing of the season and his second complete game. For the Colonels, Parrish (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing all four runs in the fifth, despite striking out four in 4.2 innings. He also walked four, hit one and had four wild pitches. Lamar finished with just five hits but had base runners on in seven of the first eight innings thanks to eight bases on balls and a hit batter. Dunson saw his career-best 11-game hitting streak come to an end despite reaching on an error in the fourth, while Dunkin extended his streak to 11 with a lead-off double in the seventh. Anthony Moore had two walks and three stolen bases. His bid to tie the school record of four, which is held by four different players, was snuffed out in the eighth when he was thrown out at second. He is now 10-for-13 on the season. The teams will continue their series with game two on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Didier Field.

What is funny or sad about football fans worrying about losing their coach? I wonder if the people in Newton will be unconcerned if Coach Barbay decides to drag up one day. I guess that WO-S fans really don't care about Dan Hooks one way or the other and certainly aren't worried about having to look for his replacement. Realistically, the WO-S fans will and have burned up the boards when a favorite assistant coach is either leaving or returning. Boy, they must be goofy over there at WO-S, right? That is just the nature of sports. If you have a successful coach, you are worried about him leaving. If you have a coach that is not so successful, you worry that he will not leave. Neumann has been more successful than any other coach in Nederland history in terms of wins and winning seasons. Nederland has a great record with Neumann whether you include playoffs or not. In his 15 years of coaching the Bulldogs, Neumann has not had a losing season. That is a great accomplishment for any coach that has nothing to do with 2 or 3 teams making the playoffs. It would be very difficult to find one person who would disagree with LaMarque's decision to seek out the best coach available for their storied program. Being a finalist for that job, says alot about Coach Nuemann. LaMarque wanted Neumann! -
I can say this it will be a heck of a game!

Fort Worth Southwest coach suspended 1 year Fort Worth Southwest coach suspended 1 year STAR-TELEGRAM Fort Worth Southwest High School coach Scott Gray was suspended from all UIL activities for one year for violation of Section 1201 (a) (3) of the UIL constitution and contest rules, a result of decisions handed down by the State Executive Committee of the UIL on Friday. His suspension will go through the 2008-09 school year. The UIL decided to punish Fort Worth Southwest boys basketball coach Scott Gray for verbal abuse of an official after a game at the state tournament last month. Gray, who led the Raiders to the Class 4A state final, said in a post-game press conference that he wished the game could have been officiated by officials who are used to a fast pace “like Houston or Dallas or Fort Worth†and not someone “from Amarillo.†An Amarillo official was part of the crew for the 4A championship game, won 80-77 by Dallas South Oak Cliff. Southwest’s top player, Kendall Timmons, fouled out with 41 seconds left. Gray announced shortly before the playoffs began that he was stepping down as coach at Southwest. He said the UIL is telling him he broke a rule that requires him to accept the decision of officials without protest. “I guess that’s what they got me for, but I don’t know about verbal abuse,†Gray said. “I’ve never read anything that said I couldn’t say anything to the media about what I thought. I guess that’s because we usually don’t have media much, not like in college or the pros.†The hearing is at 9:50 a.m. at the UIL office in Austin and is open to the public.
