15U Pirate baseball will be holding open tryouts on Saturday, May 26th at Vidor High School at 10:00 AM. The Pirates are looking to build off of a very successful Fall season and are looking for players to continue that tradition. The team will be coached by current Lamar University player VJ Bunner and Derrik Kilmer.

Especially since my inside source told me he either withdrew from Vidor or is in the process of it...

I heard this also. -
Congrats Coach Harris. Hopefully you get this program going in the right direction and you enjoy many years of success at HF.

HF is 0-4 in district play and tomorrow night they take on the silsbee tigers at HF's field. To have any chance at playoffs they are going to have to win the next 6 games in a row. Looks to me like they played a bunch of mediocre teams in preseason and got the big head and now they can't step up to the plate and get the job done. They have lost 4 district games, 3 of them which should have been wins. In the WOS game they made errors and couldn't get anything done at the plate. When they played HJ, Jeffcoat pitched great but had no defense behind him and yet again they could not get the job done at the plate. Against OF, they had a great chance to win it in extra innings but 2 errors in the eighth cost them that game. And tuesday night against Bridge City, HF hung in there for the first few innings with a score of 1 to 1 and then 2 errors made by HF brought across 2 more runs and it went down hill from there. They are going to have to bring all they have for the next 6 games. And if the rotation continues like it has been Jeffcoat will get the start tomorrow against Silsbee and for HF's sake he will do good again and actually have some kind of "defense" behind him which will lead them to a victory.

It's hard to be a leader when nobody seems like they want to be there. Have you watched the intensity that most of the kids have. There is a few that have the full burning desire to be there, and then the other half who don't. I hear a few voices on the field when the HF plays. It kinda reminds me of your name "SilentVoices." But they still have the full potential to make a comeback. Nothing is over for those boys they have a few good leaders, and I believe that they will step up to lead the team to more wins again. So leave the negativity out of this thread. Leave the "There is next year attitude." And let the boys figure out whats going on don't need the talking on here for them to figure out what the need to do.

The problem with HF is that they are not one unit. They are a team of talented individuals that do not play together. They play as individuals. This is not something that can be turned on overnight. This is a mindset that should start way before a baseball season ever starts. "Team" happens by the veteran players taking the younger players under their wings and building a cohesive unit that thrives off of each other. Many, and I repeat many, not all, see any other player as a threat and they look for any way they can to alienate that person from the returning core of players. Any person who knows anything about defeating the opponent knows that it is a lot easier to defeat that opponent when they are divided. Many, and I stress not all, of the upper classmen have done the dirty work for the others in the district. Until HF starts treating the entire high school program, seniors through freshmen, as one "team", they will struggle. Sure they will make the playoffs from time to time, but they will never be a perennial power in 21-3A until the attitudes change. -

You elected the school Board to hire the sup. and sup to hire all personel. Why dont yall let the sup do her job and yall do your job by supporting hf athletics.
And this surprises you how? If the parents don't get a say so in who is hired, how will they be assured that there kids get to play? We can't have that happening at HF. Deserving players play? No way - I want my son playing. -

Ooooops..... So 2 district games and zero points .... And they still play BC & Silsbee!!!!
It's a good thing all those freshmen left. They may have messed up the chemistry of HF's offensive juggernaut. -
Doesn't matter who they hire. Only qualification is that they are able to follow orders from the parents.

Vidor JV beat Memorial 18-0. Now 4-1-1. Play Baytown and West Brook, their only loss, tomorrow. These guys are playing pretty good.

Ky is a great player and a great kid. He and a couple of other freshmen could have helped HF's team, but instead of embracing and aceepting them, they would rather discredit and alienate any player who may take away from their playing time. This is the nature of HF boys athletics and that is why they continue to struggle year after year and the good athletes go to other schools.
Ky is the ONLY freshman that would have made the Longhorn Varsity this year if he would have stayed. Right now they are playing pretty well, and getting the basketball kids will only help them. We all know how Ky is doing at PNG but have yet to hear about these other "good" athletes...how is Cam doing at Vidor, what team is he on?
I heard Cam quit.....walked right off the field during practice and quit

Shouldn't these be on the basketball forum?

Good job Lindsey. I am extremely proud for you and of you. You are a very talented and gifted ball player and UT is very lucky. Remember, the cage is always open and the Williams family will be pulling for you. Congrats!

If they would hire a superintendent/basketball coach, they could probably avoid UOF.
Thats a dang good idea!!!
I believe a former HF BB coach from the early 2000's got his administration certification.
But, does this former coach have a winning track record?
Yes. He definitely has a winning track record...probably the best BB coach in HF history. He took them further in the playoffs than any team ever advanced. When he left HF, he took his new school to state 2 or 3 years. He is now the head coach at a Houston area 4A school.
Well now, if he is at a Houston 4A, why would he go to a middle of the road 3A? (enrollment, money)
I don't think he is interested in the job. He does, however, have a call in to the current superintendent with a recommendation for the future coach. -
Damien Bates - Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach at Goose Creek Memorial. He coached under former HF basketball coach Jeff Keener. He is a good x's and o's guy who is a take charge kind of guy. Parents might not like it, because they won't have input which can be a problem at HF. He is very organized and regimented. He is also strong on discipline. He has the fire that HF needs.
