FWIW, there is no shame in losing to a good Carthage team.  The only way I would've been ashamed was if the Buckeyes would have quit.  They showed a lot of character by not quitting, even though they couldn't buy a break for a whole half plus of football.  Down 49-17, and scored 20 straight points.  There was still fire in their eyes until the bitter end.  I can guarantee there were some nervous fans on the Carthage side of the stadium for a while.

This wasn't really an upset. Carthage is a powerhouse, with arguably the best coach in Texas high school football today. I don't even think you will hear a Gilmer fan say that this was an upset.

That being said, I was questioning Poppy before this game started. I watched the first game this season, which I'm sure you all heard, he broke the Gilmer passing record in a game and what not. The reason I questioned that, is because I had seen L-E twice (now 3 times) this season, and their secondary is just not what is has been in past years.

I also have been trying to find the statistic, but I don't think it's out there, on the YAC during the Gilmer/L-E game. Watching the game, I am figuring over half of the passing yards was due to YAC. He doesn't take many deep shots, it's mainly just the usual Gilmer screens and short throws.

Gilmer does get a lot of their yards from quick outs, slants, tunnel screens, screens in general, but this year is about half and half yardage wise - half the yards on quick pass and runs (under 15 yd throws), and half on deep balls.  The deep ball threat was completely absent last season.  Not so this season.  Carthage took away the deep ball away from Gilmer, making them actually drive the ball.  Smart coaching by the Carthage staff.  Turnovers were forced, giving Carthage a short field several times in the first half.

I honestly didn't see this game as an upset.  I saw it more as a pick 'em game.  Carthage was the better team this season.

  3. We will certainly find out a little more about this Buckeye team this Saturday night.  Putting all the players in the right places on defense is still a work in progress after the heavy losses to graduation on that side of the ball.  Injuries has slowed that progress a little, but they are getting better.  The keys to the game for Gilmer are getting 3rd and 4th downs stops, and stops in general.  They will likely have to have at least 8 to 10 stops in this one.  The offense will certainly have to set the pace, and try and make it a shootout.  If that happens, I like Gilmer's chances.

Gladewater looks pretty tough this year, too.  That game oughta be interesting.

  4. If he is from Gilmer, I don't think he's being realistic at all.  Maybe just talking smack.  Gilmer has a ways to go to be a serious contender.  They have the talent and skill, but just haven't put it all together yet.  Carthage will definitely be the best team they have played thus far this year.  I think Gilmer is also the best team Carthage will have played thus far.

This is an interesting matchup, a big test for both teams.  I don't know who will win, but I do know I will be there.  It oughta be epic!

For those wanting to see the game, KGAS puts all the Carthage games on Youtube within a couple of days after the game.  William Greene puts the highlights on Youtube also, but only keeps them up for a couple of days before he moves them to private.

  5. Gilmer"s offense gave up 14 points.  You can"t expect to win when that happens, especially this late in the playoffs.  Celina capitalized, we didn"t.  They deserve to be there so they are.  I believe if we played that same team 10 times, we would likely go 5-5.  Oh well, it is what it is.  Good luck, Mustangs!

  6. If we can play with the same intensity as Gilmer, less the turnovers I like our chances. That last pick 6 did it.So close.

I agree.  The key is to winning this late in the season is to not turn the ball over.  In Celina's defense, they had five turnovers themselves.  The problem is we didn't make them pay for them like they did us.  I think we would've won the game had it not been for the last pick-six, though.  They had a lot of trouble stopping our offense most of the time, especially in the 4th quarter.  The game was full of momentum swings.  We had them on the ropes in the first quarter.  They had us on the ropes for most of the second and third quarters, and into the 4th.  We came out swinging in the 4th.  Just came up short.

  7. Field position played a large part in the yardage differential, and Celina's running game was much more consistent.  The two pick-six interceptions were a killer for Gilmer, too.  It was a good game that could've went either way, in my opinion.  Hats off to Celina, though.  They were the better team Friday night when it counted.

We had an awesome run, winning 30 straight.  We were hoping to meet up with y'all again, but Celina made sure we didn't.

  10. On the FSSW app, most of the Gilmer faithful are pulling for Cuero. Why is that?

Beats me.  I've got that app, and haven't seen anything like that, but I haven't looked since this morning.  I haven't signed up as a poster, but I keep hearing all these things going on on that app, but I haven't found any of it.  Am I doing something wrong?  Not updating or something?  I'm not a smart phone kind of guy, as you may know now.

  11. Welcome to the board BlackFlag. You will notice we are WAAAYYYYY more civilized over here than an unnamed East Texas board. LOL

Thanks.  I've been here before but never signed up until a few days ago.  I've really gotten tired of that other board.  It's gone way downhill in the last few months.

  12. Who really knows how the different regions stack up against each other?  We find out half of that equation this week, the other half in the finals.  Cuero looks like they turned their season around after those 4 early losses.  It'll be interesting to see how they stack up against the Mustangs.  The other matchup looks to be a toss-up.  I know it doesn't matter either way to either team at this point, though.  They both want to get back to the big dance.

  13. I couldn't agree more, losteraussie.  This is a matchup that has been pointed to for several weeks.  We finally get to see Celina in person.  I really don't know what to expect, except a tough matchup for two very good undefeated teams.  Most people have picked Celina to win, but I'm not sure that'll happen.  I think the Buckeyes will find a way to win.
