1. As a member of the local chapter I take offense to your comments. I have never heard anyone in our chapter say anything bad or negative towards coach Mattews or the Vidor program. The only thing true in your statement is he doesn't use our chapter. If you call us bad officials that fine, you are allowed to have an opinion. My opinion is your head would explode if you tried to call a game. But I consider it an insult and a slap in the face to be called a cheater. The statement that he can't get a fair game is a bald face lie. I put in many hours of training, reading the rules book (ever seen one?) going to classes, clinics and discussing situations with fellow officials because I love the game. The only teams I pull for are in college or the pros. If any body tells you he can't get a fair game from the refs he's making an excuse for losing. Good luck with the guys you get, they work hard too.

Sounds good to me-you HAD to bust the wedge or it would be very effective-I wonder what effect this will have on kick-off returns...

I think it may be huge. Many teams are scrambling to come up with another scheme. It's also a 15 yds penalty from the spot they come in to formation. so that likley means half the distance to the goal. I can't wait to feel the love when we call back a long one or even TD and put the ball on the 8 yd line!!! And the signal is the same as UnSportsman like Conduct but we don't report a number and it doesn't get a kid ejected after a 2nd one like USC. I can see a run coming back and the PA guy saying it was for USC.

Translation: The NFL did it, so these guys want to look like they are being progressive.....

This was discussed at our TASO district meeting last night thouroughly. It's actually put in place to try to lessen the chance of our children suffering concussions, which can be life long injuries.
  4. Monday, July 19 will be the first weekly meeting for the Southeast Texas TASO chapter of football officials. Meetings will be every Monday until the end of the regular season. They are held at the IBEW hall in Bmt on Spindletop rd. Start time is 6:30. We provide classroom and on field training. We are always in need of new members so come join the fun!

:P      The coach in Jasper took his punishment and knows that he didn't act they way he should have. [b]But anyone who has ever coached or played knows also how easy it is to get caught up in the moment and its those coaches who display those type of emotions that always seem to be in the championships.[/b] So to that coach in Jasper I understand what you are going through and just continue to guide your 12yrs old all star team all the way. We still support, love, and appreciate all that you do for our boy's . People are always going to try and knock you but thats the price you pay when you are on the top.

Well I don't kow how true that is. I have umpired many Jasper High School games, including their play off run this year and I can say I have never seen Coach Mixon lose control, and I consider him one of the finest coaches in our area. He has a pretty good record to back it too!

This sounds more like a coach who stands up for his team. His team seems to love & respect him.  Thats all that matters.  This seems to be a one sided story
This is one I have never understood. How is running on the field, screaming at an umpire over a judgement he made, taking up for your team? I'm not saying that is what happened in this situation but I see it a lot and they say "he's just standing up for his team". I don't get it.

Alto has a GREAT catcher.  Had him last week for the Mount Enterprise series.  Made calling balls and strikes very easy for me.

The kid from Evadale wasn't bad last night either. He threw out 3 of 4 attempting to steal second. He could of got the 4th but they missed the tag. Two of them weren't even close. Good ball game from both teams.

Lets just say in your case the Umps got it wrong but I am sure that there were many plays before this that could have changed the outcome of the game. Unless there were no errors physical or mental by the players or a coach, the call the Umps made did not cost anyone the game. People forget the error that little johnny made back in the 2nd inning that let two runs score.

  9. I am a member of TASO and have been for about 10 years. I pay dues to TASO and the local football and baseball chapters. TASO and my local chapters have taught me rules, mechanics, how to deal with difficult situations, brought me along from working 7th, 8th grade ball to working varsity playoffs. They showed me where and what equipment to purchase and scheduled me games that fit in to my work/personal schedule. If I (never have yet) ever had at conflict with a school, or coach, player, fan, or the UIL there in no doubt in my mind that TASO would support me 100%. What would I get from the UIL for the additional 50 dollars? My guess is nothing. I don't know of a single one of my TASO brothers that going to register with the UIL so my suggestion would be for you dads to start reading the rule book and working on your base and plate mechanics. Hopefully this will be resolved before season.
  10. To all you bleacher umpires you can start your career on the other side of the backstop tonight! Beaumont chapter of TASO baseball starts having meetings tonight at 7pm at the city court 700 Orleans in downtown Beaumont. This is on the corner of Orleans and Forsythe. We will meet here every Wednesday through the season. Come join us. Pay ain't great but man just wait till you feel the love!! Seeing eye dogs welcome.

Coaches get credit for setting good examples but when you get players to step up into a leadership role such as this, you've got a well rounded program in the making.  Players respond to the leadership and examples set by other players.

And, I am glad there is an article that acknowledges how FB Lowclasstower sucks at playing with class.  I hope they get a copy of this article.  Their intimidation stategy did not work and their plans for going to state were inhibited by WB.  I'll take a team with heart and character over thugs any day.  Time to go get my tickets, because I am committed to being there on Saturday.  Get ready for roll call Bruin fans.
They have a copy. I sent it to the HC. Funny because I have been to many Hightower games and have never once seen them commit any of the alleged infractions or be called for them. Either they are very sneaky or the young man from Westbrook made it up to inspire his team. I don't know the kid from Westbrook but I have met many of the kids from Hightower and I personally do not believe him. Anyway, Good Luck Westbrook!

That man was in the huddle, they called time out because of it. The officials were terrible, that wasn't the only thing they did wrong.
You may have 12 in the huddle - you may have 20 in the huddle..you Can't beak with more than 11. As long as the extras leave a few seconds before the huddle is broke there is no foul.
Incorrect.  You may have more than 11 on the field if you aren't in a huddle, but of course, those players must exit before the snap of the ball.  For instance, you may have 22 guys on the field at one time when switching from offense to punt team.  BUT, those same 22 players CANNOT be in the huddle together.  If you have more than 11 guys in a huddle communicating with each other or communicating with the ref for that matter, then it is too many men in the huddle.  If an offensive substitution comes in, then the player being replaced must leave the huddle within 2-3 seconds of being replaced.
trust me, I've been officiating for 10 years,,you can have 12 in the huddle, you can't break with 12
Man, if you have been in officiating for 10 years, you might need to go back to get a refresher course on the rules.  Look at the rule that was posted right before you posted.  The player being replaced must leave the field within 3 seconds of being replaced.  He cannot just stay in the huddle and leave 3 seconds before the huddle is broken.  Please don't officiate one of my teams games.

Two men in motion is not a foul either. Two men in motion AT THE SNAP is. Time called  before the snap is a pretty heads up move by the coach.

Very sad to see the end of High School sports (as we know it) in Texas. As an experienced official in faseball and football I can tell you that I refuse to be strong armed by the UIL. I can also tell you ther are MANY of my brothers that feel the same way. But at least the guys that have been trying to get on a varsity field for years but weren't qualified will now get their chance. Looks like I get to start bow hunting next year!
I think that TEE hit it right that there will be some guys that do not belong on a varsity field that will and it is not going to be a pretty site. I think one of the ways maybe this gets worked out some is if the coaches really complain to the UIL. The coaches from both schools agree on officials and if they agree it shouldn't matter what association they are with. Tee you know i will call with you anytime.

Even after my uh-oh in Humble during playoffs? Thanks you're the man! We talked about it at our football meeting last night. looks like the majority feel the same way I do. Also the San Antone, Dallas/Fort Worth, Lufkin and Houston chapters. Looks like football will be going from 5 experienced officials on the field to maybe 2 men??? Or maybe the UIL has a crack staff of officials trained and waiting in the wings..At least we have one more baseball season.
