They evidently don't even have to take an eye exam.
lol, yeah, they don't see everything. and sometimes they see imaginary things. but, i was leaning more towards physical condition. like being able to keep up with the play.
Noticed on the Ned - Vidor replay that several of the refs were really hobbling around. Didnt look to be in very good physical shape......with that being said, its a thankless job and Im gratefull to have them. I wouldnt wanna do it.
Hey, I resemble that remark! LOL. I can tell you of the 5 in Vidor because I was one (umpire). I have packed on a few lbs this summer due to personal things I'd rather not go into but I still run 2 miles a day when I don't have games or training meetings, not fast mind you but I'm out there. The guy in the white hat is running bone on bone in his knee. He is gutting it out for us and having it replaced as soon as the season is over. The other 3 which are the ones with goal line to goal line responsibilty can run like deer. I assure you it's a non factor. Now eye sight........LOL.. and no I won't discuss anything to do with the game...just sayin

I have been involved in youth sports (baseball/football) for 10+ years and never witnessed a coach demoralize a group of 5-6 years as I did this weekend in a Flag Football game. I am not going to identify the team because this is not what this post is about but I witnessed it at the PNG fields this past weekend. Youth sports especially at 5-6 years of age is a time to help kids learn the game and make it fun for them. From the start of the game to the end (even when they were winning) the coach continued to yell and correct his players with no praise what so ever. With STJFL affiliated with USA Football and having to take the courses to be a coach, he sure did not represent STJFL OR USA football in a proper manner. If my son was on the team, I promise there would some words exchanged. Youth sports have really taking a down hill slide the past several years, it seems it more about the winning and the parents. We as coaches and parents really need step back and let these kids have fun and teach them the fundamentals of the game. I promise you the wins will come in due time.

Good post ManCub. I see it waaay to often also.
  3. I was umping a high school play off game a couple years a go when the batter leaned back to get away from a high and tight fastball. The ball contacted something but I couldn't tell if it was the nub of the  bat or hand. I looked at the batter's face to see if he was in pain but got no read. I asked him "Tell the truth did it hit you or the bat"? He said "it hit the bat". I said ok, thanks be ready to tell your coach cus here he comes. I called it foul and the 3rd base coach comes charging. Now he's attempting to get his point across rather emphatically that it hit his player's hand. I kept saying "no sir, it hit the bat". After about two or three rounds of this I finaly said, coach ask your player. The player told him it hit the bat and then coach said "OH HE'S A LIAR, YOU CAN'T BELIEVE ANYTHING HE SAYS!!....Great kid..still playing locally.

I hope they make the right decision this time and go with Mahaffey.  He is a proven AD/HC with a successful track record.  I have known him since his time at BC as an assistant.  He is a quality guy with the kids at heart.  He has been at HF 4 years now and for the good of the program those kids don't need another change.  I think those that check into him will find he places importance on the total program, not just football.  Just my opinion.

    It's a good opinion..I agree

Just got word the NCAA has banned the 33-30 Cat-5.  It would not surprise me if they ban the other sizes. Maybe high school will follow suit; they tend to follow college.
I got the email from TASO a few minutes ago stating they are banned from high School also
  6. The UIL/NCAA are cracking down on this. Until this year it was a live ball foul penalized as a dead ball foul. This year they had us start penalizing it as live ball from the spot of the foul. I personally have a hard time penalizing a kid for being happy but find it very easy to penalize a kid for being mean (taunting). We TRY to give the kid the benifit of doubt if he's close to the goal and say he was across before he did it therefore score counts penalty to follow. I'm afraid in this case he would have forced my hand and I would have had to take the score away. It would have made me sick but that's why we high school officials make the big bucks! LOL

Some of the penalties called last night looked like bad calls on the tv replay.  The holding call on Nederland's rushing touchdown against the receiver was very questionable.  If he was holding it was inside the shoulder pads.  Defensive pass interference in the endzone was legitimate but the very next play that PNG scored there should have been offensive pass interference called because the receiver clearly pushed off.  Overall a very good game but too many penalties for each team.
And some people thought I was crazy for calling out the terrible officiating. I also love how PNG scored on an obvious pick. It was out in the open. I bet those officials don't even know what a pick is. Where do they get these clowns?!
The coaches pick us. How many games have you officiated,? Just because drool runs out both corners of your mouth doesn't mean you're level headed.

Can someone tell me, What constitutes and illegal motion of celebration when a ball carrier makes a touchdown? :-\
Never heard of such a penalty. Are you asking about the "excessive celebration" penalty?

That rule states that a player can not "draw attention to himself". That leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
Yeah maybe thats what it is.... probably what it is... sorry wrong choice of wording  *sigh* one day i will get it LOL.. what would constitute excessive celebration? I anyones opinion..
For my crew excessive is a choregrapghed dance routine or some kind of NFL thing with the ball or if they don't quit when i tell them them to.
Hi fives, chest bumps etc. are ok. Do it and get off the field. Nothing wrong with kids being happy. Don't belittle/taunt/show up an opponent though. That pulls yellow immediately.
yeah I agree with that. sooo what about slamming the ball on the ground?
spiking the ball is a no no

Tee, I did the Billy White Shoes in the endzone one time after catching a td pass, no flag in the 70's but I should have received one for a bad imitation !!!  lol

illegal motion can be 2 or more guys in motion at the snap, one or more guys never getting set for one second before the snap, more than 4 in the backfield which is actually a different signal but sometimes gets confused..celebration has been relaxed and is more of a judgement call this year. I can tell you on my crew we let the kids have fun, a little, but never taunt. Some other crews are less tolerant, others are probably more so.

Did DRH ever use the Bmt. officials when playing the mid-county schools?  The long pass was def. out of bounds.  the 2-pt
was quest.  Congrats to Nederland and Coach Neumann, great win.  The great coach you spoke of?  Isn't he OC at Texas High now who just lost to vidor?  Nothing against TF I now and like him.  It is just some people treat some coaches on here like deity while bashing others. OFF SOAPBOX NOW! Sorry
The long pass was def. IN bounds. We saw pics Sunday, taken by a photog on the WOS sideline and he had it frame by frame and the reciever def. got his 1st foot down in bounds. As for the 2 pt. play I'm glad that wasn't my call. The HL that made the call was 100% confident in it and he told me he saw the replay and still feels 100% confident in it. Unfortunately we don't have the time to ask all of you your opinions before we make and call nor can we rely on replays like college and NFL. Great game from 2 great teams. Good luck to both!

Better hope it does not rain a bunch between May 19 and May26th. 2 rounds in 6 days could get hairy if weather is a prob. And before anybody says that is 7 days, I am not counting Sunday which you can not play a UIL contest. This also just lets you know that for some schools and people baseball is one of those Oh Yeah sports, Oh Yeah we have a baseball team too.

The SouthEast Texas chapter of TASO starts their weekly meetings tonight. Anyone interested in becoming a football official is invited. We will meet every Monday from now until the end of the season at 6:30 pm at the IBEW hall on Spindletop rd in Beaumont. Come join us!

Everyone who referees, imo is doing so for the same reason...they have a love for the game. They don’t choose to put themselves in a position to be criticized because of the pay..:D....They just want to give back to the sport that they have spent their life around. No one is perfect and bad calls are inevitable. They are the last thing that the people who bear the responsibility of making these calls want to happen. So don’t chastise a ref the next time a call doesn't go the way you wanted. Instead, shake his hand after the game and tell him he called a good game. At the end of the day, he shares the same passion for the sport and loves the game just as much as you........ 8)

Oh and by the way, my crew has 3 Vidor games this year so I'm counting on you to keep your side of the stands in check!..LOL

I get goose bumps every Friday night that I'm standing out there on the 50 and the  flag's flying and the anthem's playing...CANT WAIT..

I feel your pain..that's why I'm an umpire, I work with the linebackers and linemen, none of us like to run too far..It's those 2 guys on the sidelines that have to run, but they don't mind, it gets them away from screaming coaches!..lol...

We (Zebras) are getting new uniforms. This year we will be wearing blacks pants with the white stripe like college and pros refs. It's about time, those white Knickers make me look fat! Well maybe it's not the Knickers...
