I remember when Clay Davis took the Jasper job. He sent several "good athletes" packing. Took what was left and won a district championship.

Foster does it year in and year out he has been at Big Sandy for years and people don't realize what he does not just for basketball but what he does for Big Sandy the athletic program and the school.  Not many people know he also is a principal and takes care of all the school house stuff and is the AD.  He cares about all the kids not just basketball that is why I would put him up in the top 5.

Everyone knows I'm a huge Foster fan but you can't just label Clay as someone who took over a great program.  First, he was a part of that program for several years and was widely considered one of the best assistants in this area.  Second, the only reason he was an assistant those years was because he wanted to be home.  He did a very good job at Jasper and Tatum as a head coach, and those are part of his resume'.  He's definitely one of the top coaches in this area IMO.
That's why I didn't make a list.  No way I could limit it to 5.

Clay Davis over Kevin Foster at Big Sandy? I just don't know if Davis can be put into this category yet. He has only had a program for one year, and it was a top notch program when given to him.

In all fairness, Kelly has been doing a pretty good job of zapping the Port Arthur talent pool lately...

Any local list has to start with these three (no particular order):
    Cotton Robinson
    James Gamble

I agree. These Big Sandy kids know how to play basketball, and have skill to go along with it. Remember this team beat Nederland who IMO will win one possibly two playoff games depending on match-ups in the Area Round...these kids can play.

Outstanding post.   I'm out of likes or I would have tried to like it twice.
As I've said before, whether it is English, Sutherland, Foster, Saveat, Clay Davis or Sigler (to only name a few), all are outstanding coaches and their schools are lucky to have them.  It's the same as when a debate starts on the football side on whose better between Neumann, Cornel T., Dubois, etc.
To be honest, I'm not interested in those debates because as far as I'm concerned, those are rich people's problems.  Folks should really count their blessings they have are fortunate to have one of them teaching their kids...

First off, Nederland's Brian English is an OUTSTANDING basketball coach, and probably an even better PERSON.  If you say that what he has done in Vidor and Nederland is anything less than amazing, you do not know anything about the game, and that is OK, because even those that THINK they do, DON'T.  He has single handedly taken a cellar dweller basketball program at Nederland and turned them into a LEGIT threat to beat everyone in the district, every year, no matter who he has...THATS coaching....NOW, with that said, you cannot take anything away from the coaches who have succeeded in the playoffs, and have won state championships, NO MATTER HOW MUCH TALENT you "THINK" they may have had.  Talented teams get outcoached and beaten ALL THE TIME in the playoffs, so please kill the "they have talent" excuses. Todd Sutherland is an OUTSTANDING basketball coach...You cannot take that away from him just because he happened to coach at talent rich, traditional basketball powerhouses like Kountze, EC, and HJ, so WHY is the first thing that comes out of guys mouths when it comes to Boutte, is "I'd like to see what he does with such and such team without talent"? That's CRAZY! Just give these coaches credit where its due...Head to head wins do not ALWAYS equate to one coach being better than the other either! Would you take Central's rookie head coach over Brian English? I don't think so...But you have to see the overall body of work of these coaches to properly evaluate them, and the majority of people on this board are not qualified to properly evaluate ANY coach.  Who is the GREATEST coach in SE Texas? I have my opinion, and everyone is entitled to that. But please remember to give proper credit where it is due no matter WHO you are pulling for, and you are likely to make a more accurate assessment of these guys abilities, even though it won't matter one bit at the end of the day what you think anyway! Just my two cents...

But unless that size is accompanied by Elite level athleticism/quickness (Jordan Hunter ;), Nick Garth) it is hard to compensate atleast at a D1 level.

I guess what I don't understand is why a few Ozen fans seem to get their panties in a bunch when English is complimented on the job he's done.  This started with a statement I made about how much the Bulldogs have improved this year.  If you saw them at the start, and have seen them now (and know anything about the game), you really can't argue this fact.
No one was putting down Saveat.  In fact, he's been consistently complimented in this thread too.  And I know many of you love Boutte (he is routinely brought into these threads especially by one of you), and I have nothing but respect for him.  Clearly he was a heck of a coach.  But it would be like every time his name is invoked, someone pointed out - "well, he is certainly no Bob Hurley or Morgan Wootten."
We have several outstanding coaches in this area and to praise one is not to deride another. Just wondering what the undercurrent is because some certainly seem to have an agenda where Brian is concerned.

The fact that you have to ask the question is very telling.   And you may be the only one in this thread who doesn't understand that simple concept.

Interesting...  Did you not see that Nederland player clapping in Ozen's player face after a timeout?  Did you see unnecessary trash talk?  Did you see the stare downs after made baskets?
Boyd got frustrated during one timeout and a coach had to get him under wraps.  After that, Boyd then proceeded to sink Nederland's ship in ot.  So it's safe to say that his attitude straightened up pretty quick

The fact that you fail to see the beauty in English's coaching could not be less surprising to those who know the game.  I am sure you would be equally unimpressed with Kevin Foster.
On a brighter note, I hear Barnum & Bailey's is hiring...
