  1. For Friendswood:

RB -- Sam Longbotham (Sr.) a couple of long runs and at least one punishing stiff arm

DE -- Christian Robinson (Sr.) two sacks and very disruptive

Both QBs -- Brandon Sargent (Sr.) and Tyler Page (10).  Sargent had a good run and made good throws all night (WRs often dropped them) and Page was an explosive and illusive runner.

  2. Was impressed with Friendswood they had size and good overall team speed. Receivers need to work on catching the ball a lot of drop-balls in wide open space and the center needs work on his hike's to many over the QB's  head. I don't know how tough the competition will be 6a but I do see this Friendswood team making a good run this season. Dayton had more rust to knock off and Friendswood banged a lot of it off for sure but that's what scrimmages are for. We need to work on our down field blocking a couple of blocks here and their would of resulted  in big gains, dumb penalties kept  "D" on the field and extended their drives. We allowed FW to turn the corner to easy I know that will change when we stacked our "D" with a few of our offense studs gong both ways. Our QB over threw some passes but overall looks likes he will put up big numbers this year. Don't see to many teams that will have an answer for McBride he is instant offense he had two short catches for long TD's.

Receivers are a big question mark for us.  We had at least two deep throws that should have turned into 6 and a number of other drops.  Ironically, a sophomore kid from JV who was just up to get a look at the varsity level caught the only deep ball late.  I'm not so worried about the center.  He is a vet.  He had a bad day and some of those snaps were by our number 2.

McBride is a slick open field runner.  If you guys can get him the ball in space he is going to embarrass some defenses. He made ours look bad a couple of time.

  3. It was a good scrimmage.  Some hard hits and both teams were fired up (some times too fired up).

First series, first play Friendswood D forced a turnover and scored.  Friendswood scored on 3 of its first four possessions.  It was hard to keep up with substitutions, but Friendswood started making significant subs on D in the second quarter and Dayton was able to use some incredible speed to get the score closer.

I hate to sound like a homer, but I thought our ones dominated on both sides of the ball.  Dayton looked fast and illusive on O in the second quarter and the defense looked stout between the tackles other than two long runs.

As I feared our receivers looked shaky.  They dropped a lot of passes.  Our kicking game is also a worry and the scrimmage raised some questions about our depth at D line and interior D line.

    Good luck Broncos

  4. Not sure you can win a scrimmage.  Coaches are usually more interested in seeing how their players perform against real opposition and setting first and second strings than in winning.  Still, Dayton always offers a good test of where we are after two weeks.

    Team strengths:

QB is the returning starter from last year and can make all the throws.  We also have a sneaky fast kid who runs our read option well.

RB our starter and first back up are two year lettermen and our starter is a punishing runner who rarely gets stopped for a loss.

D-Line -- this is the biggest strength of our team. All four are two year lettermen with a number of all district honors for all.

D-Backs -- should be solid at safety and corner.  Returning starters at three of the four spots

    Team weaknesses:

O-Line -- only two returning starters, but three others have some varsity experience.  Tackles are really big, Center and Left guard returning starters.

LB --  Only one returning starter and the coaches will be looking to fill the other two spots with players with limited experience.

WR -- only one returning starter.  This position is a big question mark.

FG -- the three kids we had last year at V and JV either graduated or are playing soccer exclusively.

  5. Friendswood's Sam Longbotham has to at least be in the discussion.  He isnt blazing fast, but he gets to the hole fast, has great down field vision, makes kids take bad angles, has a little wiggle, and punishes DBs who dont love tackling.  He will get a ton of touches as a runner and with our screen passing game will catch the ball in space with regularity.  He wont lead the district in rushing yards or recieving, but will be up their in total yards.

  6. @fwoodfan - How is Tyler Page looking? Will he play QB this year? His dad was an incredible athlete for Odessa Permian back in mid to late 80s.

    Tx,

He will definitely get some snaps at QB and at WR (I think).  How much QB he plays is the only question.  Brandon Sargent (our starter) is a cool headed player who can make all the throws.  He is a little slow running with the ball which has been an important part of the position for us for a couple of years.  Thats where Page has the advantage.  Traditionally we are a passing offense, so Page is going to have to develop as a passer to challenge Sarge.  My guess is that he will take about 25% of the snaps as a read option option and then be the man next year.  He is fast and illusive, but I dont think he is ready to be the passing QB.

  7. Cant wait to see the Broncos in person at annual scrimmage in a few weeks.  Always a good early test for both teams.  If you've never been to Henry Winston Stadium and as you get closer you start thinking "It cant possibly be back here"  dont worry it is.  I think it will probably be the smallest stadium in 6A next year.

  8. if PAM faces PDawson the first round they will beat them. I think this will be a stellar year for
PAM, a lot of talent with a dynamic one two punch at Runningback, and on Defense Secondary looking very stout. Gonna be interesting to watch what happens as the season unfolds! Still wish we played yall, wouldn't do nothing but make us better.

I admit to not knowing much about PAM, but I wouldnt write Dawson off as a guaranteed win.  They are big, mean, and nasty.  There might be a little drop off at the skill positions, but their O and D lines will be big and experienced.  Their JV O and D lines could have started for more than half of the varsity teams in our district last year.

  9. When my kids were young (son and daughter), I pushed them pretty hard.  I had no illusions about either of them playing at a big time college program or even receiving college scholarships.  My son (football) is the kind of kid who works his butt off, but is missing some essential athleticism.  My daughter is quite athletic (basketball and track), but probably lacks the size+skill set to play at the next level.  I pushed them hard because I wanted them to know that regardless of their talent level they had to devote themselves to improving if they wanted to play. This is I think the lesson that sports can teach our kids.  Success is usually the result of hard work and feeling like you accomplished your goals (whatever they are)  through your own effort is valuable.

My wife and I feel that winning is important and that feeling like you contributed to a team victory is its own reward.  Hard work and playing hard are essential parts of that.  We are honest with our kids.  When they play well, we praise them, but when they dont we tell them. When they make excuses we call them out.  When they get hurt we make it clear that they are still expected to play if they can (there is a difference between hurt and injured). I do some yelling from the stands -- usually I yell hustle, or go rebound ( yelling at your son during a football game is pretty pointless).

Perfect play and results are nearly impossible, but you can play your hardest every time.

  10. My daughters AAU team played in the small (4 teams) Baytown 200 tournament this weekend. We played the SETX Elite team (which appeared to be mostly girls from Barber's Hill) twice and they beat us both games.  Based on what I saw I'd say the near future for the BH girls basketball program looks bright.  They executed their offense incredibly well, rebounded well despite not being particularly tall, and man can they shoot.  As importantly, the coach and the girls handled themselves with class and dignity through four physical games.

    Congrats!

  11.  This is the equivalent of football playing games into December. Everybody is good at this point. Btw it's refreshing to have a mature discussion about two good teams.

Agree on all counts. Its possible to love your team and the kids who play for your team with out hating the opponent (though truthfully, its alot harder for me to remember that when we are playing Santa Fe).

I have been a bit surprised by our success this year and I cant say I'm sure what we will look like come Thursday. But we have been solid on the mound and in the field and hit just enough in the playoffs.  I hope that holds, but I know Brenham will be ready to go hard and will make the most of any mistakes we make.

  12. I know it will come across probably the wrong way, but Brenham is Brenham. Solid in every position, deep pitching-finesse and power, 1-9 can hit with kids sitting that would start on other teams. Lots of speed and power to drive in runs. Heard it was heated with Santa Fe, but that's to be expected when district foes meet in the playoffs. Would have been same way if Brenham would have faced Mag West instead of KPark. At the end of the day, stats mean squat at this point cause it's win or go home. Looks like it will be a good series. GO CUBS!! KKD

It comes across as confidant and with Brenham's history you have every reason to be.

I'd say without much hesitation that I expect Brenham to be more talented top to bottom.  We've had some magic of late and its hard to say if we underperformed early in the season, are over performing now, or have just gotten to the level we should have been at all year.

I hope its a great series.

    Go Stangs.

  13. Anyone know anything about Friendswood? Know they have to be good to be this far, but what's their strengths?

I'd describe our team as scrappy.  We we got off to a slow start in a tough district, but then came on at just the right time.

We have two really solid starters (not necessarily blowing people away), situational hitting, pretty good team speed, and solid fielding in both infield and out.  Bullpen has a lot of variety, but again not likely to blow people away. Its kind of been a different hero every game with some unexpected guys stepping up and getting it done in clutch situations.

The team was highly motivated to beat Santa Fe.  The games were heated in the stands and on the field.  No blows exchanged, but a lot of words and bad intentions. So, we might have played a little above our normal levels.

    How about Brenham?
