  1. Personally I love basketball. Have played it my whole life. Went to a couple of home high school basketball games this year but saw all the home football games and most of the away games. I also watched some playoff football games that were not affiliated with my home town team. I did not see any playoff basketball games. Had the home town team made the playoffs in basketball I probably would have went and watched them if the travel wasn't too far. I've actually seen more softball games this year than basketball games. If you ask me which I prefer to play it would be basketball by a long shot. But for overall popularity of fan excitement my opinion is football is king.

  2. New Caney is looking good. I say they will not finish last in the district and will get one of the 4 playoff spots

With two weeks gone in the regular season, New Caney’s baseball team has an offense better suited for a video game.

The Eagles have scored at least seven runs in nine of their first 10 games. They have six guys hitting over .400. Two Eagles, Jacob Caple and Shawn Wade, each have 12 runs batted in for the season, while another batter, Dwayne Snider, has nine. As a team, the Eagles are batting .465 with a .539 on-base percentage.

All of those numbers add up to a 9-1 start for New Caney and a future that is looking brighter by the minute.

“The emphasis all fall was to get off to a good start,†Eagles head coach Donnie Randell said. “We’ve had slow starts in the past. We finally had a little experience and maturity about us.â€

Last weekend, the Eagles went 4-1 in the Brenham/Montgomery Tournament to take third place. New Caney played its first four games of the tournament within a 24-hour span, beating Bryan, Montgomery and Huntsville but losing to Texas City. The Eagles defeated Kyle Lehman 8-6 in the third-place game last Saturday.

If there was anything to quibble about with New Caney, it would be the inconsistent pitching. The Eagles’ staff has allowed five runs or more in seven games already. Randell attributes most of that to fatigue, but he said it has been difficult keeping the earned runs down.

“We’ve gotten great contributions from three or four guys,†Randell said. “It’s a struggle because no one can throw as many pitches as we’d like them to throw. Early in the year, you’re giving up a few runs, but on the flip side you’re going to get better as the season rolls along.â€

Even though they have allowed a lot of runs, the Eagles still have a couple of solid pitchers at the top of their rotation. Jordan Harrison has 13 strikeouts to just four walks in nine innings pitched, while Wade has a 1.33 earned run average.

New Caney took on Kingwood Park last night. The Eagles have one more tournament left this weekend, their own New Caney Invitational, before they begin play in District 14-5A next week. Randell said the district season should be extremely tough.

“We knew coming in that we had one of the toughest districts in the state,†Randell said. “All those schools have exceptional players. We started planning for this two years ago; we made a commitment for our younger players that we would develop them in the varsity.â€

  3. It's not been all that long ago that Cleveland was not allowed to play UIL football due to their fans getting out of control....

what year? what happened? How long were they "not allowed to play UIL football?"

    o

stealthninja, that never happened, you have a nobody running his mouth about something he knows NOTHING about, yes the calling was poor at this tourney, but in the end the better team won, now if we were to have a re-match would they win again, who know's, I believe its how these kids show up that day and want to play, Congrats to both teams!!!!!!!!

    Indian Fan,

You may want to check into this because it did happen to Cleveland just not to the extreme that was stated. It was in the mid 80's and it was basketball not football. They were able to play UIL games but they did have some games played where no fans were allowed to enter the gym. During this time frame Cleveland had some very good teams. I do not remember the exact year but would say between 82 and 85. This resulted from a very bad fight where most of the blame was placed, and I guess proven to have been caused by the Cleveland supporters.

  4. Last time I was at a football game I don't remember seeing stats as a final score.  You people are not comprehending what I am trying to say.  I DONT CARE ABOUT WHAT KID MAKES ALL STATE, I'm wondering why Lumberton still thinks they won the Super Bowl.  To be called a GREAT team winning district and making it in the playoffs year after year is what makes you a great team NOT making it two years in a row for the 1st time in the history of high school football.  I would not even call that a good team, I would have to say the other teams in district had off years. So until Lumberton has had the players and seasons that a WO-S, Westbrook, Central, PNG, Nederland, and other area teams have had keep it to yourself and put your L-train back on the Thomas The Train play set.

We will have to keep this conversation on the board until next year cause I want to see who will make a better college player Hanna or Grogan?  Even though I can answer that now (Grogan-size, speed, and strength), (Hanna -???)

This post is about what kids received the individual honor of making the all state team. So if you don't care who made the all state team why are you posting on this thread? Just because Lumberton does not have tradition is no reason to knock the kids who obviously had outstanding years. The all state selection has nothing to do with the playoffs. The nominations are made prior to the playoffs starting.

  5. I happened to get to see the LT vs Kileen game. Lake Travis is very good. I will also say that they have more than just Gilbert. They had 3 turnovers in the first quarter and were still up 22-0 at the end of the quarter. Their O line is dominant and I mean really dominant. Number 70 the left tackle has also committed to UT. That kid can flat out play. He hustled on every play. Not only blocking at the line of scrimmage but had really good speed and was blocking downfield after some of the shorter passes. Number 4 was their best receiver, he had great hands and ran precise patterns. The defense was good but not great. They will give up a couple or three scores to FW. I will  guess the FW game to end up around 56 to 21. Gilbert's backup at quarterback would start for most teams. He got a lot of playing time this year because they always got up big early. He is number 18 and is really fast. He will also throw a pass from a reverse after lining up as a receiver.

  6. I also went and watched this game. I agree the officiating left alot to be desired. However on the inadvertant whistle most of the defense stopped. The whistle blew really early in the play. He may have gained 10 yards had the whistle not blown. Really it had no impact on the outcome of the game. New Waverly has some really good athletes and most only play on one side of the ball. Keeping them fresh. For 2A this is not all that common. I was impressed. #20 can flat out fly but also runs very tough. I am not one for talking down coaches so I will try to watch what I say, but their was a coach on the field who received a unsportsmanlike penalty. A little later their was an opposing player injured on that sideline, from my vantage point it appeared the coach actually stepped over him. I am not from either school, so I believe my opinion is unbiased but it looked to be in very poor taste.
