Just asking cause i have heard it both ways..
What is UIL rules about playing games the night of school being canceled?

In the 1a district to the north they have a 3 way tie for first between West Sabine, Zavalla and Broaddus. They had flipped and came up with West Sabine playing Zavalla tonight in Colmesneil. Then the Winner playing Broaddus Saturday at TBA..
With the weather Zavalla and Broaddus canceled school today. I know that it won't effect Broaddus cause they had the bye for tonight. But what , if anything does it do to the first game. Can Zavalla play a game tonight after no school today. Heard it both ways. Is there a ruleing here???
Hey Bucksitr,

The rules are different for playoffs than for the regular season. In the regular season you can only play on one school night except for a certain amount of tournaments. That is why they play on Fridays. It is after school. A play in game uses the playoff rules. At least that is the way it is to the best of my knowledge.

Now that i think about it I have to agree New Caney should dominate coming from a 5A and all that. KPark has been pretty lucky the last couple of years. How did New Caney do the last time they were in 4A 2 years ago?
New Caney was a playoff team many times while in 4A. I believe they won the district the last year they were in 4A. I think that was the year PJ Dean was a senior.
That is correct. Won district by one game over Barbers Hill. Dean beat BH and Ross Hales 5-1 in next to last game of district. IMO, New Caney has one of the best coaches around.
Lightning, is Dean still out of baseball or did he return ?
I talked to him about a month ago and he was still out. Says he has been invited back for the Spring. I have seen him at the high school cages taking and pitching some BP. When I talked to him, he and Jordan Harrison were throwing to each other.
I agree about the coaching, Donnie is a good teacher of the game and gets alot out of his players.
Thanks, Lightning. I sure hope he goes back..........too much talent. Where is Harrison playing ? North Central ?
Yes Harrison is at North Central. PJ had some arm problems. Hopefully he followed the team advise and did all the workouts he was supposed to do. How's your son doing? I read where you said he had a procedure but should be back soon. My daughter was suppose to be playing in Fort Worth this weekend but it has canceled. She said they are trying to make other arrangements to play Angelina this weekend in Lufkin.

  6. I do not believe any of the kids that were on New Caneys varsity last year or this year will leave to go to Porter. This years team should be loaded with a really good junior class who have been in one of the top 5A baseball districts in the state. Lufkin, College Park, and The Woodlands. Believe Lufkin and College Park played each other in the regional final last year. These kids played competively for the most part with alot of sophmores last year. I believe they will dominate 18 4A next year.
  7. Guess I should maybe re-phrase, I don't see them being a power house in the next couple of years. More than one thing hurting them. They do not play any real stiff competetion in pre-district or district. They will most likely go through the regular season at 10-0 or 9-1. By the area round they will face someone who has been battle tested. I also think the split has really taken away alot of their athletes. They will some above average starters but they will not have as much depth as you have seen at Humble in years past. Any idea why didn't they schedule Kingwood in a pre-district game? I think Huntsville wins the district next year. I don't know all of their predistrict schedule but believe they play Brenham.

I believe you stated earlier you would pay 50 bucks for a New Caney School beating a Humble ISD school in their first season. It has happened before. Check out Kingwoods first year playing varsity. They lost to New Caney 41-0.

Smalls was not the best athlete his senior year. Two other players from that class played some college ball but he did not. Michael Miller and Jacob Powell. No doubt Smalls was a surprise as he wasn't even considered a starter to begin the year. The Dunlaps would not be considered the best athletes of their class either.
I do agree that next year Humble and Huntsville will start the season as the teams to beat in this district, but Humble is not what it once was either.
I meant now...Not in the early 80's.    New Caney hasn't always been so depleted athletically, but the growth of Kingwood really has hurt them.

Smalls was a solid athlete, which to me was under used...I would of used him as a HS DE not a running back/ Linebacker... From what i understand he played a season at Texas State, but im not positive.   and the Dunlaps weren't the best athletes in their class...Who was?

as far as Humble not being what it once was, ill agree....We were split...Just like Humble wasn't the same Humble after Kingwood....We changed.   I believe that this Humble (the one that will no longer be split) will be a better one then in previous years...i believe that Humble will take a course very similar to North Shore and Westfield over the course of the next 10-15 years.  We are no longer considered rural, but Urban.....and if we can approach our programs like those two have (NS in 96 and Westfield in 02)...we will have stronger teams then we did in the 90's and early 2000's.

We have an opportunity to build our tradition on equal footing before we get moved back up to 5a...a chance to play on a level playing field instead of playing programs that have 300+ kids and have had a student enrollment of 3400 for 10 years now...

Humble is in a unique place in its history, we get a shot to rebuild ourselves.....and not start from behind.

After we split with Kingwood it took us 10 years to recover because we moved to the new class 5a...we would of been better off staying at 4a...but it didn't happen that way.   with the move down, we will be able to avoid the growing pains to a large degree and stay competitive...which is all i ask.
I agree Smalls would have been a good DE. As for the Dunlaps, if memory serves me I believe he graduated in the same class as Andrew Riddick. Andrew was a gifted athlete, just had a little too much attitude. Believe he was still playing college baseball last year. The younger Dunlap did not like to get hit, that is why he rarely ran the ball on offense, and he fumbled too much on kick returns.
Humble will definetely be competetive in 4A. I just don't see them being a power house. You also didn't give the New Caney Oline any love. They had a couple of all district Olinemen this past year in a district with The Woodlands and Lufkin. Jacob Powell was at Texas State for at least 1 year, I don't remember Smalls going there but he could have.

    D. Towers was great for yall, but he was a former Atascocita Eagle.  Chad Jackson never developed into anything, he was slow and had poor vision.   The Dunlaps were pretty good...The younger one isn't as good as the older one, but a pretty solid talent. Buddy Rios was an ok athlete... I remember Chis Smalls at LB, he was beast of an athlete...but that wasn't enough to help yall win that game with nederland.   Those are the kids that stuck out to me...and Smalls is probably the only one that i would consider Divison 1.

Overall New Caney biggest problem has been the offensive line, to me they always look extremely overweight.

    Weaver Ned. '83
Did this kid play at New Caney and then move to Ned ? Jamie, I think is the first name.
Hey Eagle07,
Yes this is the same Weaver from New Caney. You are correct it is Jaime. He had a sweet left handed shot. I used to school him in one on one. He was only a sophmore though when I played with him. His dad left New Caney to coach at Nederland for Jaime's senior year. Coach Weaver was a heck of a coach in my opinion. If anyone over there has a contact for either Jaime or his dad please PM me. Would love to get in contact with them.
