You MUST REMEMBER.....All of the Rick Reilly's of the world have NEVER won anything BIG in sports in their lives and hate people who do...WAY TO GO YATES!!......KEEP SETTING AND BREAKING RECORDS!!!!
Rick Reilly has been voted sportswriter of the year 11 times. i'd say that's pretty BIG in sports, no matter which side of this argument you're on.
Orangefield destroys someone in baseball. Its a big deal for a few days. Yates destroys someone in hoops. Its a big deal for a month or two. You naysayers need to get a grip. These kids aren't permanently damaged in any way whatsoever. IN FACT, I GUARANTEE you that in 10 years -- maybe less -- some of those Houston Lee players will BRAG, "Yeah I played against that unbelievable Yates Natl champ team. They were THAT good. They crushed us us so bad...." Also, somewhere out there, a former HS CB is bragging that HE was the one on that viral/ESPN football youtube video when Cy-Fair's Sam ??? hurdled over. I was in a downtown Houston high rise, thick-carpet law office a while back when two of us got off on 1970's high school hoops and the lead mega-priced attorney across the table starts bragging on how his Clear Creek team lost to Jackie Carr's Wheatley Wildcats by less than anyone else in the state that year. We even did the Wheatley clap-whisper-chant for the whole room. ITS ALL F-U-N. That's the epitome of kids sports. Even kids without that perspective at the time gain that perspective over time. Adults should already have such perspective. All y'all should try it. If y'all had ANY CONSISTENCY AT ALL, you'd call for the resignation of the UIL Executive Director, but if course "that's different." Loopy logic ABOUNDS. One FURTHER example from this thread: Rick Reilly tries to connect a shooting incident to Yates coaching style and NO ONE ADMITS ITS OVER THE TOP. Perspective, gentlemen, perspective. Try keeping things in proportion. This might be my last post here because a moderator disagrees with me. Perspective
enough with that. you make a nice post with several good points (that i do in fact disagree with), but it's a well thought out opinion that is a valuable contribution to the discussion. leave it at that.

Get it yet? You can always shut me up (i.e. bullying) but you'd be better off addessing THE ISSUE than trying to make this personal. Its another example of you using "the straw man argument" (i.e. create something I didn't say, then addressing that rather than what I really said and meant).
the insult was your blatant disrespect for my being a teacher, and the insinuation that i would be bad at it based on one post i've made. i've made several valid posts on two or three different threads about "THE ISSUE" that you've chosen not to address. you're still hung up on one post. it has nothing to do with pulling rank to win an argument. if you do the same thing to anyone else, you'll be gone as well. as for my "fuzzy logic", that was intentionally fuzzy to prove a point. "but he said he was going to run up the score before the season started!" was used as a defense of Wise's coaching decisions. My post was meant to show that saying you're going to do something before you do it doesn't make it right. Obviously, robbing a house is not the same as running up a score in a basketball game. The point was made, however, and several people were able to read into that post and get the point i was trying to make.

If you can read Rick Reilly!
bullets13 replied to shorttexas1's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
it's as equally one-sided as Reilly's, and while i have no problem with his perspective, i still completely disagree with it. I'll respect the opinion of an eleven-time national sportswriter of the year winner over that of an admittedly biased Yates alum. i also think that the "basic fact" that he's claiming reilly got wrong is actually right. if i'm not mistaken, Yates tried unsuccessfully earlier in the season to break the 100 point record, and failed, but have now successfully done it later in the season. it's really a pretty insignificant point, one way or the other, but seeing as it is martin's big finish, i felt the need to refute it. i'll agree with Martin's assessment that the kids are class acts, as what i've seen and read would indicate that to be true. i don't, however, recall anywhere in Reilly's article where he attacks the kids. one thing that's bothering me: people keep bringing up 60 point wins in football and trying to compare it to what Yates is doing. i still think that is BS. there are certain unwritten rules in every sport: you don't pass when you're up big in football, you don't stretch out base hits or bunt men over when you're up big in baseball, you use one-touch passes or only score on crosses in soccer, YOU DON'T PRESS IN THE SECOND HALF WHEN YOU'RE UP BIG IN BASKETBALL. What's the difference between a football team winning by 60 or 70 and Yates winning by 100? I've never heard of a HS football team that was up 50 at the half that came out and kept airing the ball out to try and score as many point as possible. If the 3rd stringers come in and run the ball the entire 2nd half and score a couple of touchdowns, no problem. If you put in the backups, but let your backup QB pass for 300 yards and 5 scores in the 2nd half and score 100 points, you're a tool. When you're 3rd string is just a shade weaker than your 1st string, and you have them press and TRY to run up the score as high as you can, that's classless (In My Opinion). Whether you agree with Wise or not, quit trying to compare him to coaches in other sports who actually make an effort to control the score and keep the clock running. -

They should have just went to the plate and purposely struck out everytime once they were up by 15. I'm not saying Yates winning 175-35 (Not sure if that is the correct score) is right or pressing the whole game when you destroying the other team is right but it is the way he wants to play. It will more than likely come back at him one day.
i don't agree with OF scoring that many runs. the difference being that in basketball you have options of easing up, slowing the ball down, calling off the press, etc etc. in baseball, there's no way to slow things down to minimize the damage APART from actually asking the kids to purposefully fail. each team is going to have to make 3 outs each inning, regardless of the score. The good thing is that there is a mercy rule, which helps. asking your players to intentionally strike out is a far cry from not pressing in basketball, or holding the ball a little longer before shooting to slow the game down, which is ALL Wise would have to do to gain the respect that his coaching record would deserve if he would show just a bit of class and humility.
Bullets makes some good points. Asking a kid to purposely strike out is entirely different than pulling back a press. I would also disagree with OF beating Liberty 24-2 if, with a comfortable lead in the later innings of the game OF tried to strectch singles into doubles, advanced on passed balls, continued to try to steal bases, executed hit and runs or tried to squeeze in runs.
very good point.
YEAH "YOUR SCHOOL" WAS MENT TO BE RACIST. ??? im not sure how you come up with this, but hey if you want to think/talk negative on a very solid program go for it. i sure wont stop you. i will make it simple for you though, so maybe you get a clear picture....."your school" means ANY school in the nation. Yates broke a hundro at the state game....i bet if they score 100 in the final game they will be champs...again.
all i wanted was an explanation. there have been several comments that basically boil down to "you people" don't care when (insert white school here) runs up the score. although there's nothing to back these comments up, the general point of these posts is "you're a racist because you only care that Yates is doing this because they're black". this is the furthest thing from the truth in my case, and i erroneously thought you were making a similar allusion with your post. now that you've explained, i see that i was wrong. my apologies. i get my feathers ruffled when people keep hinting at me being racist. as for my talking negatively towards a very solid program, I WILL in fact continue to do so. I have no problem with the kids, but the way the coach does things is despicable, in MY opinion.
106 goals a game meant she was averaging about 5 a game, which means she was probably allowed to score as many as she could against the bad teams... i had games in high school where i had a hat trick in the first 15 minutes or so, but i would then either go sit the bench or go back and get some work in at sweeper.
This is how coach Aimee Bates plays her team during the bad games, also. Not only to Chloe, but also anyone who begins to score excessively. From the games I saw, many girls would be taken out in the first 10 or 15 minutes sometimes because of already scoring 4. In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, but i believe the most Chloe has scored in a single game has been 4.. and that was only in 2 or 3 games.
and that makes 50 goals in a season VERY, VERY impressive. the most i ever had was 30, and we weren't blowing out a whole lot of teams, so i had a lot more game time than her to get even that many.
Bullet you sound very imature. First off this has nothing to do with race so squash that. If he was at your school running the score up, who would care what you thought. Like you said everyone has an opinion. But seriously, It's kind of like a track meet and someone is winning the mile by a full lap. Do you tell them to let up or try to break the record? Most people would want them to break the record and clap for the last guy coming in. It's kind of the same situation. It's like this, if you can't run with the big dogs then stay off the court. I honestly see nothing wrong with Coach Wise's decisions.
first off, the word is "immature." should i take your inability to spell the word as a sign of your own immaturity, or should i take it as a sign of low intelligence? seeing as you had no problem making assumptions of me from one post, i'll take the liberty of assuming that it's a combination of both. I'm simply on here stating my opinion, and up until now, i've had no issues with anyone else's opinions. i may not agree with others on here, but i have not taken steps to attack them for disagreeing with me (as you have). as for race being an issue, i strongly feel that it should NOT be... BUT- anyone who has a problem with Wise's coaching style continually faces thinly veiled accusations of racism on this board. i personally wouldn't care if the guy was purple. I just don't like what he does to his opponents. It sounds like your solution to this would be for these inferior schools to simply forfeit their games against Yates, or maybe just fold their team. I can't say that this would be the life lesson that i would want to teach my high school athletes, but i guess you're entitled to that opinion. However, I do find it ironic that you compare Wise's coaching behavior to a track runner. In track, it's all about individual glory, so i guess you got at least one part of your post right. That seems to fit Wise to a "T".
