Yates is around the corner. Wise is a AAU administrator/coach whatever you want to call it. Wise becomes Yates coach, and the program takes off. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it all out. Year in and out there is not that much talent naturally occurring in 3rd ward. But hey, the UIL can't or won't do anything about it. It is what it is, probably for a long time. They could dominate 3A for decades, just like the Canyon girls. I hear they recruit also.
Since you are not from Houston, I will not go off on the statement you made about 3rd ward having no talent...That's not true...although the neighborhood IS old, kids STILL come out of 3rd ward...However, the bulk of the kids in the basketball program do not live in 3rd ward, some of them do...I will say this once again...Wise does not HAVE to recruit....HISD is a school of choice district...Kids that live in HISD want to play at Yates right now...Let me ask you this...Do you think FB Travis recruits? They have a couple if stud kids that live NOWHERE NEAR Travis....Do you even know the coach's name? It's funny how people will jump on a school like Yates and their coach, without question, but the suburban schools get a pass...why is that?
BS DV Yates recruits and you know it
No, I happen to KNOW that they don't and you are all on here just guessing.... ::)....And HOPING you're correct...but you are sadly mistaken...STOP TRYING TO SCANDALIZE THEM...If you do not know, don't guess, then put it out as fact...

Pointless, 12gage? Ignorance is bliss...no one else is making this a personal thing, except you...adults are having an adult discussion on here... As far as UOS goes, I think it CAN and NEEDS to be tweeked, according to the information that I have been given on it...it just does not seem fair to anyone, except the football program, and at HF, that apparently has not paid big dividends for the football team there...hopefully, for the kids sake, they will hire an AD that understands what a well rounded athletic program will do for a school and community...not JUST a football coach with no vision for any other program, but his. -
If Pat Knight from Lamar, lands 3 walk ons from Houston, did he necessarily have to RECRUIT THEM?

It is possible to lift weights and get some skill work in as well..you have to be organized and efficient during the athletic period..WOS, I would NEVER ask a kid that is in season, to work on another sport that is OUT of season...Football coaches do not always extend that same courtesy. -

Lamar vs McNeese St. // LAMAR REACHES 20 WINS!
Dick Vitale replied to ForeverADog's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I stand corrected, Tony was there as an assistant when they won 20 games in 87-88...I remember Coach Branch recruiting my brother that year, and forgot he was an assistant...I still don't think he was given a fair shot as head coach...2 seasons? -
Ok...I just don't think your accusations are accurate, nor fair...I know what goes on in Houston all too well...I believe that whenever you win, people that don't know, will accuse you of "recruiting".
Wasn't Tom Abatemarco the last coach with 20 wins. If my memory is correct Tony Branch didnt win 20 career at Lamar let alone one season.
Dude Yates recruits just like La Marque, PNG, Duncanville, The Woodlands, Travis, and Canyon. It happens and no one will do anything about it. This is what high school ball has turned too.
Since you KNOW this to be fact, do you have any idea what the recruiting budgets will look like for next season at these schools? ::) ::)...Listen, Yates does not HAVE to recruit...I can't say that enough..PNG? In what sport? Come on, man, really? ::) ::)

Well, I can go with that...Were they winning big in the seasons prior to 1988, though? Maybe I am too young, but I don't remember Lamar exactly dominating the league prior to 88'. I just thought Tony Branch was not really given a chance. I think Pat Knight is a doing a fantastic job thus far, but I guess it just shows where the program at Lamar is and was.. -
Dicky- Are you going on record now and predict an undefeated cakewalk season for Yates next year?
No, but I do know that class 3A just got a lot tougher, particularly in region 3...Dallas has dealt with this for sometime now, now its the Houston area's turn. Undefeated? Doubtful...undefeated in 3A, next year?...Possible.

Perhaps your definition of being "good" is different from mine. on the 3A level, I consider WOS football "good".....Hardin Jefferson and Silsbee basketball "good"...making the playoffs is great, but as a coach my ultimate goal is to be able to contend for a state title every year...Be in the hunt...So I guess its all about perspective. -
No. It won't make much difference at all. The kids want to play for Yates right now. 5A, 4A, or 3A...won't matter. If you can play, college coaches will FIND you.

I am not for certain HOW it is done at HF, but from the description of it, it seems that they require ALL kids to weight train ONE WAY, year around..If that is the case, thats not very smart. YES weight training is good for all sports, but if you do not allow SKILL DEVELOPMENT in your athletic program, YOUR OTHER sports will suffer. -
What card? Thats not what I am saying at all...Has nothing to do with race...I am talking about socio-economic passes that are handed to the suburban schools in the Houston area...People were asking "why" kids would want to go to Yates High School...The neighborhood is so "bad", right? Wrong...Its OLD...Not necessarily bad..UH is a stone throw away from the school...Should kids not attend UH because the neighborhood that surrounds it is old? My question is simple...Does the gentleman feel like FB Travis recruits kids?

The matchups will not be determined until Sunday morning...I doubt they will seed Yates and Kimball in the semi....they will likely be seeded 1 and 2 and meet in the final.

So stevenash, are you of the opinion since Kingwood Park only lost to Yates by 7, your Hawks from HJ can indeed BEAT Yates in head to head competition? After all they DID beat Kingwood Park rather easily.....
Ah, so refreshing to have a basketball mind that truly understands the differences between football and basketball training. So refreshing!
Well, H-F basketball before Price showed at H-F absolutely stunk. While, I'm sure that this year's basketball success cannot be attributed to the lifting program, certainly no one can say that this lifting system was the cause of past inadequacies in the basketball program. Remember that this is also a search for a new football coach, an area that until recent times, H-F has had some proficiency in and showed some faint signs of having again.
Well I doubt that "Universal" off season caused them to be a third place playoff team though...Weight training is essential, as I said earlier, but its not "universal" as football coaches would want you to believe, but its sports specfic. -
Ozen loses to Houston Jones by 1
Dick Vitale replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Dickie, from a team perspective & based on Ozen's size, youthfulness, etc. How do you see Ozen's strategy for winning district next year? On offense, slower paced tempo or up-tempo? On defense, more zone or man v man defense? Your thoughts?
Watching them play THIS season, they were an EXCELLENT man to man defensive team...I think that they will be much more effective next season playing up tempo offensively during district, because other than Central, there will not be a team in 20-4A that will be able to match their speed and quickness...With that said, I think they should also know how to switch gears when necessary in case teams try to make them "walk", particularly once the playoffs hit. Its hard to say what will be BEST for them at this point, but whenever your team is guard heavy, up tempo offense is what can create an advantage for your team..Transition baskets are killers when your team has speed and quickness. -
