  1. I had to head out early in the 4th. With aproximately 7-8 minutes left it was 54-12. Silsbee pretty much had the starters out going into the 4th. Sterling has some great athletes. They had some good size and speed. I was a little disappointed in their discipline however. They had some stupid errors that cost them at inopportune moments. I have never seen a team get a delay of game penalty before the 1st kickoff of the game. Sterling ran the spread and had an awesome athlete in #21 Duckworth. He is the real deal. He made some big plays when it looked like the play was doomed.

Silsbee's line was dominant. The rbs were having a track meet. I have no idea what McCarter's yardage was but I believe he might have eclipsed 200 yards with 4 tds. I seriously doubt that there is many players in the area with this kid's speed. He was in a whole different gear. Calhoun was solid and made numerous strong runs. Sterling simply could not answer the Tigers ground game.

I was highly impressed with the way the Tigers played and will be looking forward to see how PNG adjusts to the Tiger ground pounding.

  2. For those over in the area they are having some BBQ dinners and a silent auction with UT,A&M,LSU, and other items up for a silent auction. I believe it goes until kickoff at WOS hs. The proceeds go to help Silsbee's coach Hickman and his wife Chrissy the WOS business director. They lost their son (my nephew) 3 weeks ago to cancer.

I wanted to drive over myself but unfortunately am running a little too late.

  4. This is absolutely astonishing. We have a scrimmage where the game is controlled, only a mere 3 10 minute quarters, no real special teams play, and a full quarter of nothing but backup players to observe the team depth. I guess if you want to base your season on a scrimmage so be it. It is great to feel positive about your team. It would be about time for Lumberton to improve somewhat in this sport, but be realistic about what the past few weeks were really about. Silsbee nor Lumberton had the entire gameplans at these scrimmages. Each of these teams will see "real" losses this season. I would think if you wanted to talk smack it would be after a few games that at least counted. I remember a Paris team taking a few early season setbacks all to come back and beat a certain team in this area for the state title once.

  5. The raiders looked good. But need work on the kicking game. Twenty yard punts dont win games. Silsbee second group on Offense looked good (they played most of the third). Too bad this could have been a real with real game situations(special teams). I still think Lumberton will have trouble in the big 12.... Number 1 and 6 from Ltown are good ball players!

So did they have the starters in there most of the game or were they still running new kids in and out?

  6. The state or federal government could care less the state championships, district titles, or hours a coach puts into a year. The schools are not there for sports, they are there for education. Whereas I do agree athletics are an important part of helping kids to become better citizens I do not agree that they are worth more than teachers. We predominantly talk about high school sports. Prior to a kid coming to high school they have 8-9 years in a classroom without organized sports. Are those formative teachers worth less than an individual who coaches a few months of the year? I'm talking head coach such as football. Assistant coaches usually do not make the "big" bucks. Look at Port Arthur....do more folks complain because they do not go far athletically or do they complain due to the school not performing academically? Whereas I understand a coach feeling pressure to win, the entire school feels pressure to succeed with TAKS. Whether standardized testing is beneficial is debatable, but it is the reality faced.

  7. I will have to say in '89 Silsbee vs Liberty. Silsbee had just come off of a nice playoff run in '88 and was a favorite. Silsbee had struggled early to find a qb to replace Randy Matthews from the '88 season. Liberty jumped out to a 17-0 lead. It was late 4th quarter Silsbee decided to try out sophomore sensation Bryan Doss. Anyone from the early 90s era probably remembers this guy. He also was the kicker. He kicked a fg and immediately followed with 2 tds. The Tigers tie the game up with seconds remaining. Doss lines up for the xtra point and it bounces off of the lower crossbar. The game ends in a tie 17-17. A few weeks later Silsbee knocks off #2 rated Jasper and ends with a district 4-1-1 record but misses the playoffs due to Liberty having more penetrations in the earlier game.
