  1. Don't get the big head until we win some games. I can promise you that if you stay focused and the team stays focused, we'll be fine. Concentrate on football and stop reading previews. There's a long way to go...and if there's something you need to know that's written somewhere, Coach Brooks will put in on the bulletin board. This is the most important Bulldog season in years and you guys need to STAY FOCUSED.
  2. I nominate pretty much everybody on Jasper's schedule that beat us and hopefully we'll be hungry enough to get it on most of them, if not all. Looking forward to following it every Friday night from up here in Seattle, where most people don't follow HS football and most schools have low athletics budgets, so the kids wear their own clothes to practice. :
  3. I was being sarcastic. I know it's not possible...
  4. Anyone think Barry will bulk up and go after Satahara Oh's world record of 868 homeruns? ;D
  5. It would never happen, but Jasper/Newton would be pretty sweet in 4A...plus it would end all of the talk of them being anything more than friendly rivals.
  6. We're not saying they're bad men at all. We just don't think there's a good reason to do it. It's disrespectful to some of us and it's not something we'd prefer to hear by those who we answer to...whether it be a coach, boss, or even a parent. The fact that cursing is more accepted in today's society than it used to be doesn't make it right...
  7. I guess I'd have to go with a QB for Jasper this year since it's gonna be important to have a guy with some poise to get the Bulldogs going again under Coach Brooks. I'll put my money on Ben Bronson. I know Mitchell was good a few years ago, but Ben would have been even better in the spread than he was in Walkoviak's veer....and he was special for us back then.
  8. He was a great kicker and a good friend of mine back in those days. He may have been the best Jasper's ever had and would definitely make a difference in any close games we have this year. PN-G had Keith Waguespack back then, too, and he wasn't bad, either...
  9. I think I posted a prediction of 7-3 earlier in the summer for Jasper and I'll go with that. The question is whether or not that will be good enough to make the top 3. ;D
  10. UT and A&M have grass and they do just fine. I don't really see the point of having field-turf unless there are drainage issues with the field already when you guys get a lot of rain there.
  11. When did Beaumont have Triple-A ball? The Gators were Double-A, right?
  12. You just proved my point. Times have most definitely changed... :
  13. It's funny how some of you say this shouldn't be a topic, but everyone has an opinion on the subject. It's obvious that there are a lot of coaches with colorful vocabularies, but as someone said earlier, it doesn't necessarily have to have a place in coaching. When I was on the sidelines in Jasper during the '88-91 seasons, there were a few of the coaches that were known to be very spiritual and while they wouldn't swear at us, they were very firm and commanded respect. There were less spiritual coaches on that staff, but out of respect for the other coaches, they chose their words very carefully. Players were a lot less prone to it too out of respect for the coaches. Did the kids play less hard for those guys than they would for a guy like Bob Knight? No. This is all about mutual respect between a kid and his coach, parents, or whomever he chooses to look up to as a mentor. Issues like this don't seem to matter to kids these days as much as they did to some of us older folks. It's really a microchasm of where society in general has gone in the last 15-20 years. Times have definitely changed, but is it really for the better? We all need to think about that and how we choose to treat other people.
  14. So who's the QB gonna be and what do we know about him?
  15. Jasper: Ricky Mitchell Ben Bronson Jacob Metoyer Moye might have made the list had he been able to stay in Jasper. He was great in the '04 playoffs, but never hit his stride before the storm hit in '05. We all know he was good in Diboll too. Maybe j_dog can help me out with some of the guys before Ben came along in 1989-91.
  16. The two I actually saw that I remember were playoff games. I know Jasper got throttled a lot last year and a few other times since I left in '91, but since I wasn't there I'll let someone else talk about them... 1988 WO-S 38, Jasper 15 1989 PN-G 29, Jasper 18 Both teams jumped on us early and we were never in either game. WO-S just owned us after we won the first game in '86 and they were the best team in SETX without question from anyone at that time. I think the Indians surprised me more because we matched up with them better. They had an RB that year that ran a counter play early and PLOWED our best linebacker (Derrick Wilson), which was symbolic of how that night went. Every time Jasper scored, they had an answer and it was generally a drive that ate up a ton of clock. The biggest rout I ever saw was in 1989 when we beat Cleveland 82-0. To be fair, they had some sort of problem keeping their kids and a bunch of their starters left the team in the week or two leading up to our game down there. It would have been a rout still because Jasper was a very good team that year, but probably with half the points...
  17. Jasper and Huntsville used to play all the time. I'd love to see Coach Brooks schedule those guys again. There were also a few good games with Strake Jesuit, Forest Brook and Smiley, who are all out of Houston.
  18. I would say that for Jasper, it's one of three guys...and I'll rank them in this order: Reggie Davis Chris Hunt Jason McQueen There was another guy in the late 80's that was right up there, but couldn't keep his head on straight and left the team in the middle of his senior year. I don't remember his name though. Anyone know who I'm talking about? He was on that '88 team when QB Fred Hunt was a senior.
  19. I was beginning to wonder if Jasper was gonna play. I knew Brooks had talked about it, but I hadn't seen anything all summer.
  20. You would think that since they haven't been to the playoffs in ages, that they would just talk the other team up instead of talking smack...
  21. There were a ton of guys I totally spaced (Hafford and Bevil, especially) and I got David and Sean Gibbs confused. Hopefully someone can remember who that tailback was on that 2001 squad. He was GOOD. Terence and Ben both played well in the arena league, but prior to that both had cups of coffee in the NFL.

  23. They were probably there for the boy band...ahem...coaches. ;D
